While the law was made in 1974, even in 1980 it was VERY difficult for a single woman (my mom, for example) to get things like credit cards and stuff.

My grandfather absolutely adored my grandmother and would have figured out how to get his happy ass to the moon if she'd mentioned once she liked moondust. My grandmother kinda liked her roommate with additional legal entanglements. But, it was the only way to get her away from her abuser and while she had a lot more freedom than the law would grant a woman of that era, the fact that she *had* to marry this man to have that was still a trap to her and she was an angry, bitter woman for it.

Heck, this has been a goal of the GOP for decades. I'm not sure why everyone thinks that Trump is doing all this on his own. The GOP wanted it, Trump said it, Trump and the GOP get elected to control the Federal Government, and now the EO is produced.

Correction: "long ago" is NOT 1974. If it's within the memory of several million people still, using the term is almost disingenuous, because it makes it sounds like these rights were some ancient scripture, and not something many people fought for within our own lifetime. Kind of like how so many segregation photos are displayed in black-and-white, despite many of the original ones being in full color when they were taken.

The Law (ECOA) prevents lenders from discriminating on the basis of sex. The Government is no longer investigating/prosecuting this (that's what the EO does). Lenders are now free (in theory) to discriminate against women.

Meaning Trump wants to *repeal* the ECOA. "Evaluation", here, is a weasel word which means he can say "We're only looking into it," right up until the moment he kills the ECOA.
Repealing ECOA means women will likely once again need to have their husbands co-sign for credit and bank accounts, and have their husbands listed as co-owners of the accounts.

Actually, no, they haven't given control to Trump. They've given him the power to act. This is how they can get their policies implemented without having to give space to Democrats in Congress to possibly slow everything down. The GOP in Congress can still rein Trump in when they want to; but for now they are willing to just sit back and enjoy the show.

My grandma, my mom, and several of my aunts and cousins couldn't have bank accounts. My sister only just skirted that by a few years.
The overwhelming majority of men in positions of political power grew up with this sort of thing being the norm - what they see as right and proper. They grew up in a world where women and minorities not only didn't have rights, but were actively crushed without recourse. They want to return to that, dragging all of us along kicking and screaming.

We're splitting hairs here, but yes, only 70% or so of the population is eligible to vote. Those that chose not to quite clearly signaled that they are okay with this outcome, though.
