In Japan they sell plastic model of golden-ringed dragonfly as pest deterants. There's a pin at its mouth that you can pin onto your hat or backpack as while you hike. There was a video of a Japanese bee keeper testing with it to see if it deters wasps. The wasps were startled initially, but after poking at it for a while they learned to ignore it.

On a serious note, if you have wasps, don't bother with expensive pesticides. Get an empty spray bottle, and fill it with dish soap and water. Kills them just as well. To keep them from coming back, add peppermint oil to the spray, and also make sure to remove the nests when it's emptied.

This is 100% false. They don't care about other nests. I watch Hornet King, and several permaculture channels, and they actively keep multiple hornet colonies on the same property.

Not even going to bother getting rid of the small wasp nests that love my porch. Purposely built the house with a 10' overhand (about 3m for non freedumb units). They have been nothing but friendly though, and just tend to land on me and chill. But I am also a Disney princess and this has somehow worked its way over to bugs. I get chill visits from big wolf spiders and butterflies alike.

I had a problem with wasps and read about this, but in conclusion it won't work. Wasps build nests to places which already have old nests. They know when a nest is empty.

I too tried this, didn’t work. What did work however, was bird feeders. I got three bird feeders on my porch, and no wasps this summer.

Depends on the variety, some species are very territorial and won't look at an area with nests, some don't care, certain ones will reuse old nests. It also depends if you're confusing yellow jackets for wasps. It depends entirely on where you live and what variants exist in your area

Yellow jackets ARE wasps. They are a variety of wasp. So are bald faced hornets. yes, they are taxonomically a wasp and not a hornet.
As I understand it, they are called hornets because they make exposed arial nests that are enclosed, which is a behavior more associated with hornets, but they’re definitely wasps.
In North America, the only actual hornet we have is the European hornet, which is like 2x the size of a yellow jacket and slightly reddish/orange stripes too.

Went on vacation in FL(i know i was dragged) we had a nice size hex wasp nest on our porch. They were our vacation buddies for a week. I saw some crazy behavior, two of the wasps fighting on the deck when they fell from the nest. They bit each other and wrestled then flew off soon to rejoin the nest. A few people we were with were worried but they soon forgot they were even there. Love insects now before they are gone.
