Thank you for sharing this! It is one less thing I am totally ignorant about.

Wow! Mind blown. (Yes, I realize it shouldn’t be.) As a parent of a transgender kid moving toward the masculine end of the spectrum, I never considered this. Thanks for sharing this. It really helps put more context into the politicization of people in sports.

Unrelated to the topic at hand, your progress with your voice training is insanely good. It's 100% passing. You must have worked hard on it!

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Thanks! I just released a big vid on my channel about how I did it!

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It always made sense to me that they would. I like thinking of the human body as a computer. It's not a perfect metaphor, but it helps a bit. So I think of hormones as kind of like software instructions. It's telling the body to to run a set programs, including periods, and even if it doesn't have all the hardware to run it on, it still runs what it can.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Running software exe on missing hardware still launches the software lol

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yup, it's all about hormonal fluctuations fuckin' with your smooth muscles.

I'm a trans woman - I get very mild periods. When my (cis) girlfriend referred to hers as "falling to the Communists," I dubbed mine "falling to the Democratic Socialists."

1 week ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 6

We'd love to fall to the Democratic Socialists out here.

Everyone would love to fall to the literal Democratic Socialists.

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is it really a period if you aren't getting the peanut butter and jelly experience though? ;)
But seriously, I'm so sorry to hear that y'all are getting all the hormonal bullshit of periods, I hadn't thought about it before this post and now I'm mad on your behalf.

1 week ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 3

Right, not the full period, ofc, but phantom periods. I'm a trans woman and I get some symptoms every month. Once or twice, I've had cramps and nausea bad enough where I've had to call out of work (and I work remotely, so I don't call out for illness usually). My wife had to take care of me - oh, how the turntables! 😆

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ugh that seems so unfair I'm so sorry! But I guess it's the "true experience" of being a woman so idk how anyone can doubt how valid y'all are lol. My first few years of periods were the worst so they either changed or I got used to the suffering (or both). I hope that you have a similar experience where you learn to live with them. Glad you have a partner to help you out at least. <3

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We can be mad on my behalf together!!

1 week ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I told my friend that I was getting a period and she got mad at me and I legit could not understand why

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Because bleeding is an actual, sometimes debilitating symptom of having a uterus and it's weird that people keep claiming that they're bleeding when they aren't.

It's like walking around claiming you have a headache and expecting people to not be weirded out when you say, "Oh, I'm not actually experiencing the pain, it's still a headache though".

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

there it is

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So is it like the hormones say "you should be producing an egg right now!" And your body says "i don't have those." The hormones respond "don't care, hold this" then just hands you all the symptoms?

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

More of a "It appears your body didn't fertilize this egg, time to reset the stage."
Ovulation is two phases later in the cycle and I found it differently annoying.
It's interesting chatting with trans mascs that had not had periods in a while then had them return after changing birth control. Their take... my experience sucks less than when their periods return after a couple years... suck differently than their periods now.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Biology is complicated, this doesn't seem like a wild question. Our sex-ed in the US is terrible, everything I've learned about hormones and all things sex v gender are from searching and binging content from people like Forrest Valkai

1 week ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

Yea I get annoyed when people judge and shame others for not knowing, and politely asking. That just makes people never ask anything again and then education tanks. How little people realize "I cant ask about something I didnt ever even know" is super real. I train as part of my job and it is a blind spot to assume others have knowledge in the same areas and ways I have.

I guess I call ‘getting your period’ the shedding of the lining of the uterus, which sloughs off as menstrual blood.

Maybe it would be more accurate to describe what you experience as ‘PMS’?

1 week ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

You'd think that would be the answer, just call it PMS, which it is, but OP keeps insisting that it's "a period."

Women (AFAB and AMAB) already get accused of "making up symptoms" and this isn't helping.

From what I understand from some of my trans friends. Cramps are the biggest downside.

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh gawd, the period shits, and wowee do I get the fuckin' moodswings (Just like my sister during her puberty, tbh). Hell, it'd almost be better if we got the menstruation like folks with uteruses, at least it'd be a clear sign of what's going on. Hormones gonna hormone, doesn't matter what's on the birth certificate

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Sounds terrible- I didn’t know this happens to trans women too. Hopefully they get better overtime ? The first 10 years or so of my period were the worst- especially with the body aches and cramping but it got better as I got older - or maybe birth control helped idk . Anyway - even more reason for cis men to be in utter awe of the shit we achieve while being sick and in pain 12 weeks out of the year .

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Huh. Never knew that. That sounds pretty shitty!

Considering period shits are a thing... yeah it is pretty shitty lol

1 week ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

This comment section is fascinating here already because it takes about 10 seconds to Google this... but it takes much longer to confidently invent an explanation for why I'm wrong without Googling it, but I’m getting more of that lol

1 week ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 11

Honestly never thought about it because I genuinely do not care about any other plumbing but mine and my wife's, but googling it.... damn, that sucks.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've been on hrt a year.

I haven't noticed any pms type stuff.

I'd not deny someone else's first hand experience though.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Eh, not all women have the same symptoms from their hormone cycles though. Like some women get ANGRY period diarrhea, others might have mood swings, migraines, ect…

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Google responds with the data it thinks you want, not the data someone on the Internet sees when they Google it. "Go Google it" is like saying go ask you weird older friends brother who is worldly because he smokes weed.

1 week ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Especially with AI overview being so incredibly wrong much of the tone

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Google *used* to be good. But once they had a large majority of search engine market share, they decided money was more important than integrity and went to shit. Them shoving AI down our throats is only accelerating that. They're still the leader, however, because it's what people are used to using.

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

i mean, i'm a trans woman, and i've never experienced 'period'-esque symptoms. this is kind of the problem. i think i generally believe that y'all do, nowadays, but for the longest time i thought it was psychosomatic.

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

just because it didn't match with my own experiences, you know? and being a minority myself, i didn't realise there was also a segment of this minority that experienced things differently to me.

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I like combining both: getting an answer from someone who knows firsthand and googling to get more info.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I've learned something new today and I don't think I'd ever have looked it up. If someone had told me, I wouldn't have believed them and gone on and on about the hardware, not thinking about the hormones. So thanks for the education. :)

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You underestimate how fast people can make things up.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, it also takes 10 seconds to Google a plethora of misinformation, which is more likely for someone whose algorithm is already biased with bullshit. The benefit of the doubt wants me to believe that's where most of the dissenting comments come from.

From there, dumb people love to conflate information and assume "it must be like X because Y is true and X is assumed to work on the same (usually faulty) logic".

1 week ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 2

Well the first mistake would be to search on Google, that cesspit of ad links.
But yeah, there’s a load of misinformation out there beside that.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Look, as a huge supporter of the trans community, but also as a woman with clinically confirmed "your period it so heavy you need medical interventions"? Transwomen who claim to have "a period" are being willfully misleading, and TERFS love that you're giving them ammunition for "mental illness".

When my doctor asks me when my last period began, they are asking when I began bleeding. Not when cramps started.

When my doctors asks me how heavy my last period was, they are not asking me>

1 week ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 11

They're phantom periods. The symptoms can be severe - I've occasionally had cramps bad enough to be basically bedbound. But typically, the symptoms are nothing compared to my cisgender wife's period symptoms. I'll be the first to admit that!
I'm sorry yours are that bad.

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

> how bad the cramps are, they are asking me how many overnight pads I filled per hour.

When my doctor asks me when my period ended, they are asking the the last date I bled, not when my cramps stopped.

Look, I love y'all to the moon and back, y'all showed me that YES you can love being a woman and being a woman can be aspirational.... But it's a real big slap in the face when you play these dumb words games where you insinuate that you have a condition you don't.

1 week ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 7

Ever since I got an IUD that stopped periods, I say, "I don't get periods anymore" and everyone is fully aware that yes, there's still a hormone cycle, I just don't bleed. If I had looked my doctor in the eye and said, "Yes, I still have a period" they would have ripped the damn thing out because it wasn't working.

So I don't understand why trans girls are trying to chum the waters for transphobes who want SO BAD for you to be dismissed as delusional and mentally ill. You don't have to lie>

1 week ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 6

>about bleeding to be a woman. It's shitty to purposely mislead normies about trans anatomy, and dangerous to be doing it when you're already on the knife's edge of being declared insane. I don't understand why some trans women are so insecure about not bleeding that they are willing to take this dumb risk that affects the entire community. It's shitty and reckless and what do you get for it? Is there a "fishiest fish" award for bleeders I'm not aware of?

1 week ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

Well said on all points. A lot of this seems to stem from the false dichotomy to have everyone be a man or woman.

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Thank you. We absolutely need new vocabulary to describe this, because "period" is already being used to mean "blood" at the gyno's office, and I don't think that's going to change.

Having a word for those times when there's a hormonal cycle but no blood would solve all of this.

But I'm being torn to shreds for just asking for less confusion because I already don't get my menorrhagia treated seriously because "women are so overdramatic".

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I get where you're coming from, and I don't want to diminish anyone's experience with menstruation. I'm not claiming I bleed or have a uterus. I'm talking about recurring hormonal symptoms, and "period" is simply the word a lot of, if not most people use for that outside of a doctor's office. Even women I know who've had hysterectomies still say they're "on their period" when they're dealing with those recurring hormonal symptoms.

1 week ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 8

See, every woman I've ever met who is menopausal or had a hysterectomy has been very "Periods are OVER", because, factually, while they still had hormones and all, there was no more bleeding.

Because period means blood in a clinical setting. If a woman tries to get cute about what "counts" as a period, doctors shut that down real quick. Lie about your period being heavy when it's really bad cramps and you get yelled at because you're misleading your doctor leading to a misdiagnosis.

I just >

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 10

"while they still had hormones and all"

Wow, so confident despite not understanding what the words "menopause", "hysterectomy", or "hormones" mean. Kindly learn about an issue before trying to share your opinion about it. Honestly, you're simply embarrassing yourself with your ignorance.

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

don't understand why I keep running across trans women who think they've found the perfect comeback to transphobes-- Lying to them, confidently insisting they're experiencing symptoms they've never had, and then expecting the transphobes to not use it as ammo to get every GNC person thrown in concentration camps because "they're hallucinating". And that would include me, a GNC person.

What do you get by saying you're having symptoms you aren't?

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 9

We started by disagreeing over a word. We've ended with you telling me what I do and don't experience. I think that's where I'll leave it.

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

You're saying you're having a period, which you know everyone will assume to mean that you're having monthly bleeding.

You're misleading people.

There's comments aplenty in this comment section where people now think that trans women bleed every month, and are confused when someone else tells them they're not, because you, a trans woman, just claimed that you do.

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

Is your HRT prescribed in such a way that it fluctuates like a biological cycle, or is it the same dose every day?

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone that is uninitiated, how's that work?

1 week ago | Likes 167 Dislikes 5

Hormones tell your body it's time to have a kid. Body says it can't, hormones are not happy about this and try really hard to do 'something'.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're called phantom periods. Taking estrogen can cause monthly cycles with many do the same symptoms, and often severity, of a period without the uterus. Cramps, bloating, irritability, emotional responses, hunger, nausea, etc.

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

A woman without a uterus or ovaries will not menstruate, therefore never have a “period” which is synonymous with menstruation.

However, HRT can trigger PMS-like symptoms that don’t actually include an actual period itself. They’d likely experience the gastric effects, emotional effects and breast tenderness. Since they have no uterus there would be no strong uterine contractions, although other muscles can be affected too. It’d probably be similar to women who experience reduced pms on pill

1 week ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 4

thank you

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As an FYI, Prednisone side effects include hour flashes, bloating, water weight gain, and mood swings.
When I was complaining about this to my female friends they were less than empathetic about this.
I believe that the comment was, "Yeah, we have that every month."

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had a trans friend describe it, and it sounded like the muscle cramps/gastro part of the stuff we get. It's not the full experience, but it's still a routine annoyance.

1 week ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Like a regular period, just no bleeding due to lacking the hardware.

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Periods are based on hormones. The rest of the body has no idea there's no uterus or ovaries and doesn't care where the hormones are coming from; If the body is interpreting the hormones as "it's ovulation time", we can get every symptom *except* the bleeding.

1 week ago | Likes 122 Dislikes 4

And not all cis women experience the kind of PMS most of us learn about. It's a grab-bag all around turns out

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even for afab too, I had no cramps, no mood changes and only 3 days. Now it is a fucking mess and hormones are preventing me from getting pregnant. It is such a mess and I dont think this is an area that has had enough research.

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I wonder if dose, route, frequency, and presence/ absence of prog or various anti androgens impact that lottery too.

There's so little science done in the field that it's hard to say anything about anything with confidence.

Girlhood in a nutshell

1 week ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Hormones be wild. Hormones trigger the cycle, which alters moods and causes cramping of smooth muscle exactly as if we were cisgender. Our bodies also try to shed mucal lining in the area, just like a cisgender woman (most cis women don't notice blood in poop due to even more uterine lining being shed making everything kinda bloody down there).
I've had cramps so bad that I've cried and thrown up.

1 week ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 7

periods are shedding of uterine lining. the blood is what was supplying the lining to live for 9 months if an egg implants. there is also endometriosis that affects other parts of the body where sometimes uterine cells have migrated to as i understand it. part of periods can be bowel disregulation, but that's not "shedding" anything. maybe losing mucosal lining as an unintentional side effect. most importantly, mucous does not have a blood supply - it's more like sebum, earwax, or boogers.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So far i only had the mood swings. But great to know, i may also get the pain bit

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry you experience that. Cramps SUCK. But FYI, blood in poop is not normal and is indicative of something else going on. If this is happening for you, please talk to a doctor or other healthcare provider.

1 week ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

Oh I get regular checkups and colorectal screenings, don't worry. Blood in stool at period time is normal, it just goes unnoticed when the whole region is bloody. The body receives a signal 'SHED THE LINING', salutes, and gets to work. A little colon lining gets shed along with the uterine lining (and goes unnoticed), but if you have no uterus then its just a little colon lining getting shed.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1 week ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

Not sure why I'm getting downvotes for accurate medical information. Human bodies be wild.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I’m happy you’re getting comprehensive care! Just please mention the blood next time you see your docs. I looked into this further and mucous in stool is understandable, but never blood.

Estrogen influences prostaglandins (chemicals that cause smooth muscle contraction/cramping) which can also cause the bowel to spasm and secrete excess mucus, leading to cyclic bloating, diarrhea, or mucus in the stool. Maybe it just looks like blood for you? Sorry about the TMI, I’m just concerned for you.

1 week ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I mention it every time. I'm just telling you what specialists that i've been referred to have told me. Its just a thing that happens. Each time I get a new primary care doctor its the same dance - I mention it, doctor says its definitely not normal and sends me to a new specialist, specialist says that it IS normal and expected, I get new expensive tests and also poop through the mail, then I get a letter from doctor saying 'everything fine, specialist says its normal thing to happen to women'.

Have you talked to your doctor about the cramps? Nobody should be having them that bad.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You must gave got lucky with yours.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Cramps should not be so bad they make you throw up. Moodswings shouldn't be so bad that you do damage a basic "Sorry, that was uncalled for" can't fix. Period symptoms suck, but they should be a mild sort of suck, and anything more severe is absolutely something you should be talking to your doctor about. Unfortunately a lot of women (and more unfortunately, also a lot of doctors) write off severe symptoms as "that's just how periods are" but it really isn't, and you don't have to live like that

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Doctors don't care. Been telling doctors about my suspected endo for YEARS and have been offered no help. "Periods are supposed to hurt" "take more ibuprofen".

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I was genuinely puzzled because I thought a period necessitates a uterus and the blood buildup and such.

So I assume it’s the hormones that trigger a period rather than the uterus triggering the hormones instead?

I should really learn me some of this stuff…

1 week ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 1

Basically, yeah! The body responds to the (roughly) monthly cycle of hormone fluctuations. To simplify a bit, roughly a week leading up to a period, estrogen levels begin to dip and testosterone levels go way up. This is why people that experience PMS get irritable btw, it's not the "female" hormones, it's a lack of those hormones and an increase in testosterone

This signals to the body that it's time to shed some of the uterine lining (this is actually the primary compent of period "blood", ½

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

while there is some blood in there, most of it isn't actual blood. This is what gives it that distinct brownish color and odd smell) to keep things fresh and healthy 2/2

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You really should; not shaming anyone for not knowing this stuff, but we really do need much better sex ed.

Yeah they don't teach about trans sex ed - only cis - at least where I'm from. I wish they would

Oh, sex ed was an optional subject at school when I was a kid and my parents opted me in because they saw it as a convenient way of getting out of “the talk”.

So I was taught about the menstrual cycle, the various forms of contraception and so on. BUT it was in a conservative country in mid 2000s so none of it was in the context of trans people and that is the knowledge I lack.

So they taught us that girls get periods but didn’t tell us the exact mechanism because they didn’t feel it was key.

Right there with you. Grew up in middle Tennessee in the boonies a few hours outside of Nashville in the 90s. My sex ed class was those stupid abstinence only movies with the teens who all died after having premarital sex telling their obviously dramatized sob stories.

Most of what I learned came later in college because I went into a biology based degree.

While I understand it to have been a regional thing, I think it’s wild that students/families could opt out of sex ed. I can’t help but wonder which country that was (but don’t expect you to share that).

I did sex ed in school as well, also around 2000, and yeah, as you said, “none of it was in the context of trans people”. My partner is trans. I feel so clueless sometimes but I’m learning. And I think that’s the most important thing.. the desire and/or willingness to learn when we don’t know.

That's why birth control pills help women who have a uterus to control their periods. It's hormones. Also why men who are on test sometimes rage uncontrollably.

Yyyyyup. I think I heard some whispers about the thyroid's interaction with estrogen. It doesn't differentiate what you were born with, only current conditions, so if you have the estrogen, your thyroid is usually going to send those signals on the monthly to the rest of your body, regardless if the intended reproductive system is there or not.

Adding on to this; the body never reallt looks for external parts. The external parts are just the showing of the deeply internal things. In the case of sex and hormones, you have like two-three hormone washes that guide your development, and they start in the womb. The balance of which hormones are present (because everyone has testosterone and estrogen alongside others) determines your secondary sex characteristics like tits, balls, and so on, as well as where your body develops (cont.)

Its fat stores and similar things that we look at and determine if it is more masc or femme, but the differences are not as stark as people seem to think without things like body trainers and makeup and styling. So, yeah. Trans women get periods and menopause and are damn near identical (after a brief period) risk for what is often sex-determined illnessness and life developments, and so are trans men.
