After 3 years of running my air purifier non stop I decided it was high time to change the filter. That's the 3 year old filter, still sealed in plastic that you were supposed to remove when you bought the thing... And I've been so pleased with the purifier, the air never felt fresher.

LOL im surprised it lasted 3 years and the motor didnt burn out. I have one in my bedroom and that thing gets pretty full even after 6 months (change interval). I do vacuum it occasionally to try and extend life but its crazy how much dust is floating around us!

There's a good chance that there's also a washable screen filter (for big stuff like pet hair) that you should also check. One of mine had a styrofoam panel over it when I got it.

HEY I've got one too! I bought a CPAP sterilizer to clean it every day after using it to keep bacteria and nasty stuff from forming in the mask/tube. I've replaced the filter in it probably 3 times now and only this last time as I went to throw away the old one did I notice a little red tab at the bottom. That tab was for the black tape strip that covers the VENT HOLES on the black plastic cartridge. I've been running the cleaning cycle that has done NOTHING basically this entire time (years).

OMG I did that too! But it had an app that was telling me the percentage it was going down before it needed to be replaced/cleaned LOL. So at least it was only like 6-8 weeks. But holy shit the placebo effect! I, too, thought the air was so much better and my allergies improved! So don't feel bad :-)

I don't understand how the fuck the electric motor/pump didn't fry out drawing practically a null-set for 3 years? I mean, I've had assorted air filters in the last 30+ years. When the filter starts filling up and needs replacing or vacuuming &/or air compressor-ing, you can hear the pump pulling or working harder, and when completely full, it's noisy, will often auto-shut down with like a red light blinking, about "filter replacement," or it basically starts screaming, overheats, & burns out.

I honestly can't hear a difference, but it does move a lot more air now. I usually have it at a silent mode anyways, it only really makes some noise when you cook and it detects smoke.

I'm looking at the round hole grill in the middle top of pic, on right side of filter housing, which is an intentional bypass, in case of filter filling, or functioned as such. Doesn't it have some sorta light, saying basically, HEY... change/clean filter, because that bag would directly equate to FULL filter?

I dunno tbh... I actually expected it to have some bs version that counted run hours instead of actually sensing filter resistance, but no. In 3 years, no lights. It only changes color depending on how much pollutants it sense and that increases the fan speed.

Like aggressively and insultingly angry (family so hanging up wouldn’t even really help; long story). Went on a rant about “smug superior people who always think they know better”.

Lie is a little harsh - if the user has never been taught how to reboot a computer, closing the lid on a laptop or turning the monitor off and on might match what they usually do for a "power off". Between different systems or different jobs, there is a huge variety of what users are expected to consider normal.

The point is don't trust the word what they say or you're going to over complicate things often. Even in higher tier support you gotta double check the T1's work. I stopped being emotionally cynical on it unless it's something silly like the toaster example, or if they give attitude, but it's just good general practice.

True story: I installed a new ceiling fan in my bedroom a while ago, turned it on in the summer, for some reason the room got insufferably warm. I tolerated that for THREE YEARS before I saw something about fans having a clockwise/counter-clockwise switch. Flipped the switch, INSTANT relief and cool air! Sometimes these things seem SO obvious they're actually really easy to overlook.

As a minor addition/change to what you said (you said it all, but the details were sort of split up), both will mix the air, but the direct air current on you vs JUST mixing the warmer air down low with little to no noticeable airflow is what makes the difference.
(Just adding this in for additional knowledge on the subject, as when it pushes air down it will still be moving the warmer air from the ceiling. Pulling needs a place for the air to go, push needs a place for it to come from.)

I once bought a mainboard and cpu together and had the store owner mount the CPU and cooler on the board to prevent waranty issues. Once the build was ready it had hardware problems that seemed to suggest cooling problems but it never ran long enough to do diagnostics. When I dismounted the cooler (default one boxed with the CPU) it still had the protective plastic over the patch of cooling paste.

I did that accidentally trying to take off the Wraith Cooler on my 3700x as 6 year old thermal paste has more in common with cement than paste…
Anyway it took about a week to bend them back into a spot until I was comfortable putting it back in the socket and somehow it still works.
