My mom died 30 years ago. On my cake day, I wanted to see her. [warning: AI content]

My mom passed away when I was 15 (fucking cancer) at the age I am now (45).

I don’t have many photos of her. Worse than that, my memories started fading years ago. Little details first, then expressions, then the sound of her voice. And I never got to see her grow older. There’s something unsettling, almost frightening, about realizing I’m now older than she ever was.

So I fed an old photo into Gemini and asked it to give me my mom back, as if she were still around. I asked for a few images. One with my brother and me, too. Just… a glimpse of what never got to exist.

Now I’m sitting here feeling sad and happy at the same time. There’s a smile on my face, and a little sparkle in my eyes (probably the tears doing their thing).

Today is my cake day, fellow imgurians. And honestly… this is all I wanted.

I am so sorry for your loss, but that is the most wonderful use of AI. Happy cake day?

This is a good use of AI. Sorry for your loss @op. What could been is always a mother fucker to deal with.

Sorry that you lost your mum.

Just a word of warning. Don’t dive too deep in recreating hypothetical scenarios with AI. It can be very compelling to conjure things you miss the most and AI will feed you exactly what you want to see. Just like that cursed Mirror of Erised in Harry Potter. Using it will take mental toll.

Agree. But I'm not getting down that path, thank you for worrying.

Indeed, "AI Psychosis" is already a thing.

Hey - this is one of those times that maybe you let someone decide what's good for their own heart. This generated photo meant (means) something a little special to someone that's not you. I think you should let them have that without overlaying your own personal stuff.

okay. but do you honestly think this is GOOD for them?

Maybe? I guess it's more about how it makes THEM feel. I could see it going either way for me but if it brings them some joy or closure, or whatever, then it would be good for them. As long as it doesn't cause them trauma or pain then I certainly don't see any harm in it.
