If you're at all familiar with Docker and self-hosting containers, https://mediastack.guide/ has an incredible setup already composed that you can essentially just plug in a newsgroup subscription and you're off on the high seas. It's come so far since back in the Napster days.

I can't even be bothered to pirate most content nowadays. The content coming out of hollywood has been such lame iterative garbage. It's not that they're not capable of telling good stories. The people with all the damn MONEY won't pay the damn writers what they're worth. Look up the writing credits of any show. It's never career writers. It's always some group of small-time producers who write on the side. And because they're producers first and foremost, all they know how to do is cut corners.

Depends where you live and what you search for. I'm in France where recent music and recent movies are dangerous to dl using peer to peer... but direct download and streaming is not controlled and old stuff is not dangerous to dl. Still they try to block the ddl sites and that's where a vpn is useful.

..wow, I had to dig deep for that. I'm so used to network tv that was a 2-minute ad block for 8-10 minutes of content. (Not the 5 minutes of ad for 30sec of content the internet seems to want now...) But yeah, most cable channels actually had ads, outside of the movie-oriented ones that usually just ran their own promos.

And then sell you the Super Subscription service that removes those ads. Not enough to get Super, you have to have Max. Not enough to pay for access, you need to pay more for the fully ad-free version. Fucking obnoxious.

I'm waiting for the motherfucker to try. Even one euro more next year I'll quit netflix. All I'm watching is old series like House or the Office. Plus, their watch list is like a mere recommendation for me. It's a convenience I deserve. But don't push it.

Netflix got me on the "naughty password sharing" thing a bit ago. Which was fine. I was going to pay to expand my user circle. Until I saw the +$8 I was going to spend was for the ad-laden version for my friend. They HID the option to buy the ad-free subscription, which is what pissed me off the most. To get the upgrade and maintain it would've put me from 18/mo to 30/mo. I now pay 0/mo, so thanks for the savings, Netflix.

Shit like this is exactly why I never got YouTube premium or other "pay us to remove ads" packages because they'll just fuck you with that too. My brother's Xbox has ads on the home page for fucks sake, it's getting insane

When Hulu did it 10 years ago I immediately unsubscribed. The point of a subscription was to avoid ads.
