I remember wincing the first time I heard this line....I was pretty young and still know how prescient it was.

Leia’s adoptive father, President Matthew Santos

George Lucas really did try to tell a good story about the fall of democracy. Sadly the writing was "From my perspective the jedi are evil!"

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but I though Palp was gay and really gay for Annie.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You know, I never noticed how it looks like she's holding back tears before slipping into cynicism.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

who's applauding

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This was already relevant when it came out close to when they passed the patriot act.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So dramatic.

Amen

Democracy overthrew the republic

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think about this line often.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Literally the best line in the prequels.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was a shot at the Patriot Act under Bush at the time. Dark Knight did too. Little did we know how far down that line would really go

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Naw bro, we all fucking new.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Padme, you did this, you asked for the vote of no confidence which made Palpatine the chancelor.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didn't the GOP convince the Democrats to have Joe Manchin as one of them? Sounds like manipulation of well meaning people is on point.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have no idea dude, I live in Europe.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it was John Wayne who shot Liberty.

4 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 0

Clever, and also John Wayne was an incredible piece of shit, even by 70s Hollywood standards.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, he shot the sheriff.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

But what about the Deputy?

You aimin' to help me find some?

Jury's still out on that one

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Only because they refused to tell the story. It was the West, where when the legend becomes fact, they print the legend.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"at least it's not because it's sad..."

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

well if you didn't marry the boy or at least bring his entire family out of slavery we might be at a better timeline, Padmé

4 years ago | Likes 259 Dislikes 3

I mean she probably should have called it off when he admitted to genocide instead of covering it up. Also Anakin was a fucking creeper.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not telling people about his mass murder also didn't help. But sure, dodge responsibility by dying of sadness.

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Padme! Display some nepotism already!

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

It's more like she was rich enough to buy his mom, not nepotism

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

But she could free any slave she wanted. She could free hundreds. We're saying she's bad for not specifically freeing her boyfriend's mom.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What, was Anakin's legs broken? He couldn't go get his mom? Because of rules? When had rules stopped him?

I love you

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

His mother was out of slavery. She was a free woman living with a family that loved her. They chose to stay in Tattooine. She could /1

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

have died in Naboo or Coruscant just as easily. In fact, I imagine Sidious would go out of his way to make that happen. /2

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

it's not about where she dies but more how she died, brutally by the hand of the Tusken raiders. would be different if she dies by a Sith.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Unless he left a note saying "The Sith did it", it wouldn't. He would simply have some mercenary or other thug kill her, Anakin would /1

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

hunt them down and murder for revenge and the final result would be the same. It becoming a point of contention that Palpatine would use /2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s all Yoda’s fault—fight me.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

no need, Yoda is the best example of "live long enough and become the villain", just like real life old senators, out of touch with reality

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Anakin didn’t cause the republic to fail, palpatine did. No anakin means one less pawn for Palpatine but it was still doomed.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

But if Anakin didn’t turn Palpatine would of died.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was all setup by palpatine. He allowed himself to be caught specifically TO turn anakin. It was never going to result in his death.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even if Anakin helped killing him? Seem a bit of a stretch.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Palpatine had been marinating and conditioning snaking for years at that point. He knew exactly how it would play out

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

true, the Republic had it coming but might taken longer if Anakin didn't join the dark side

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unpopular opinion, but the prequel trilogy is not as bad as people make it out to be

4 years ago | Likes 168 Dislikes 16

It's aged a little better now that it has something even more poorly executed to compare to, but it's not great in its own right

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It has some annoying bits and a bit too much talking pacing issues, but aside from that, they are decent movies.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It’s absolutely fantastic and people have dumbass mob mentality

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It has enough things that i love about them that i can look past the bad

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think they’re visually stunning and I love the simultaneously complex (space politics!) and simple (laser battles!) lines of storytelling

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What holds them back, and why people hate them, imo, is the god-awful dialogue and acting, even by the good actors. So mostly- boo G Lucas.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It tried to too too much. 3D Clone Wars really helped fill in all the gaps of half-finished storytelling & underdeveloped characters.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

That said some of the most epic SW scenes are in the PT. Begun the CW have w Venator SD, Dual of Fates, Yoda v Palp. PT was enjoyable.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

He nails this. I couldn't put my finger on why the prequels were lame until seeing those.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they're easy to hate on, but they are greate VFX demos from the early 00s (and 1999)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The prequels *are* as bad as they're made out to be. The sequels just showed everyone that it could have been even *worse* >.>

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

From my perpective, they're dogshit.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is an EXTREMELY popular opinion on imgur. Fucking *whisper* any criticism of the prequels and watch the downvotes come

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There are a few fan edits that pare all three movies into one pretty great movie.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People can’t help but pile on. For what it’s worth, I’m a life long SW fan, and while the good parts are great, the bad parts are pretty bad

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

IMO the acting and dialog are so terrible it renders the movies unwatchable. They're physically painful to watch in places.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

These things are true, but matter less than respecting lore and headcanon to a lot of people. The prequels are worse movies, but better SW

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems I'm the one with the unpopular opinion.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's very... uh... prophetic.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can skip ep1. It adds nothing.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow that is a truly terrible opinion.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 11

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Personally I think Phantom Menace is the best Star Wars movie.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The action scenes were great. The obviously racist depictions of aliens, not so much.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

It's certainly better than the sequels

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I've always liked the prequels, though I love 2 specifically due to the Battle of Genosis. Big fight make monkey happy.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Jar Jar sucks and I always disliked the way they portrayed technology, but otherwise yes, its pretty good imo

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

3 gets undesservedly roped in with the other two it's one of the best

4 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree. And I enjoyed the prequels and never understood all the hate. But episode 3 was mighty.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Anakin vs Obi-Wan was and is one of the greatest fights in cinema history. Just a master piece. Shame it was bookended by akward Padme stuff

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed that fight is so good and Ewan really sells thr gravity of the lost relationship

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s JarJarring to remember one of the characters.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

People dismissing the political side of the movies is (maybe?) ironic, as dismissing the political things is what doomed everyone in them.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

We’re living through it now. If the politically agnostic would rise up for just one voting cycle & purge the toxic elements we’d be golden…

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Three cycles. You'd need the Dem's to win decisively 3 times in a row to get a super majority capable of amending the constitution and >

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

over-riding the filibuster. Until then you will remain in the present situation. The world doesn't hold out hope for you.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't hate the prequel trilogy, I just don't love them like I do the original trilogy & I hate the reboot trilogy.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The only non original trilogy Star Wars movie I love is Rogue One and I skipped Solo.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You didn’t miss much with Solo. Rogue One was excellently done.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Solo would have been fine if they didn't try to stuff all of his big life accomplishments into a single event. Also the name thing...

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The trailer did nothing for me, my brother saw it & told me everything you just said so I skipped it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I liked what they were doing, but it really needed to be 3 movies.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The name thing instantly killed it for me.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The first trilogy was classic good versus evil; the second trilogy was about… *…checks notes…* Trade federation policy.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 6

So... Tired old trope that was mostly cribbed versus slightly less used trope vaguely modeled on the Roman Republic/empire transition.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well…*compares box office takes* …YES.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I’m curious as to what you think has caused most of the wars in human history

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

East India Trading Company is also interested in their answer.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh, no, you are indeed correct. But resource haggling has seldom given us great epic stories in the vein of “A New Hope”. That’s my point…

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

But resource haggling is what leads to war and creates the epic stories as seen in A New Hope. Those stories don’t exist in a vacuum and if>

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

>you’re going to create a prequel series to that epic story, it’ll start with resource haggling, like most wars in history

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Was it though?

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

He checked his notes.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My notes are impeccable. *checks them again to be sure*

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup: A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far way, Naboo was under an attack. And I thought me & Qui Gon Jinn could talk the Federation in-

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

maybe cutting them a little slack.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Jar jar was annoying af tho.

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 4

They didnt have the balls to make him Darth Jar Jar which would have been the best thing ever. Bumbling idiot clown is actually a Sith lord

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is why he got fewer lines in each subsequent movie.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Jar Jar is just C3PO with a different accent; both are just as annoying. Change my mind.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They were characters that filled the same slot. But, jar jar was less useful, less significant to the story, and more intrusive/distracting.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Jar Jar was significant in Ep 1, C3PO is Ep 6. That's about it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yousa talking dookey-day?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Take Jar Jar’s name out yo mouth!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Unpopularer opinion, The Sequel Trilogy isn't as bad as people make it out to be

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 12

7 and 8 sure, but Rise of Skywalker is worse than anything. Makes judging the whole trilogy problematic

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It is by far the blandest rendition of Star Wars.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

they're cinematic masterpieces compared to the sequel trilogy

4 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 9

the sequel was simply recycled lines plus cgi

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was going to upvote your comment, but I am instead upvoting your username… doppelgänger…

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There’s an argument to be made for “better”, but “masterpieces” is hyperbole

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I love that the writers were like "hes a clone", but then why would the clone have the lightning scars from the Mace Windu fight?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm watching the sequels with a friend. Saying, "the prequels are masterpieces compared to the sequels" ain't wrong!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Buddy, the prequels are fucking TERRRIBLE still.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

It’s easy to get wistful about some of the better qualities of the prequels, but there’s no way they’re masterpieces in comparison.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Give it another 20 years and people will be saying they weren't that bad. The prequel hate was much stronger than the sequel hate.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Sequel expectations were a lot lower because of the prequels. A lot of people just didn't care anymore.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I stopped caring after episode 7

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of people were hyped for The Force Awakens, which was worlds better than TPM btw

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure, but that doesn't contradict my point. Hype for TPM was immense, even if it was objectively terrible.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1
