The nose thing is the kitten trying to make sure you're still breathing. Humans sleep a lot deeper, for longer stretches than cats do. They're worried that you might be dead.

It isn't whether or not they come to you when they call your name. The real trick to know if they know there name is how fast they run away when you yell their name after catching them breaking a rule

Yes! Cats learn the name you give them. The more you use it directly and reinforce it the quicker it goes. All 3 of mine come when called seperately!

same for mine. i do yell BAAABUUU MIIIIIOOOO and they both come. taught him that when i just had em (they were 15w old) and it only took 2-3days before they started coming when i called their name(s). sometimes im talking to Mio and then babu just walks up 's'up' me as well lol. maybe they both think they are called 'babu mio' ... sometimes i think babu thinks like that lolol (he is the denser of the 2 lol)

I know that dogs and I presume also cats apparently only really listen out for the first syllable of their name. So if your dog's name is i.e. Merlin, he's only listening for the "mer" sound, and will react accordingly to Mermer, Mer-stopheles, Mer-ster Wigglebutt, or whatever other nicknames you wanna give them that start with that Mer sound.

I've heard cats respond to higher pitched sounds, so they may ignore a lower-voiced or "bassy" name call, but respond to more "sweet" or higher pitched calls.

Saaame. The nickname depends on what they did. Shithead is usually the universal nickname when any of them did something bad, though. Like using my hair to climb my back with their death mitts digging into my back. Fun times.

Pets respond better to words that end in long vowel sounds (at least that's the idea with choosing dog names). The other rule that I've lived by is to choose something that you're going to be comfortable yelling out into the neighborhood when you lose track of them.
