Texas is fighting apathy, vicious gerrymandering, and voter suppression. I was a poll watcher and overheard a poll worker tell a new-to-Texas voter that "she was in for a treat" as he was checking her in. My mouth nearly fell open — this state is severely unfriendly to anyone who doesn't have perfect ID's, or something doesn't match. This state has so many restrictions in place — for example, there's NO reason we can't do same day voter registration but no, Texas made its deadline 30 days before. Texas could do online voter registration but NO — it has to be mailed, or handed in. There's no reason we can't have early voting through election day but no — Texas cuts it off the Friday before, so there's only 1 weekend to vote. Georgia gets 3 weeks of early voting — we get 12 days. Main-in ballots? Don't be silly — those are only for old people, disabled people (and by golly you have to prove that), military out-of-state, and "normal" people BUT ONLY ONCE A YEAR if you're out of state. Houston, during Covid and the 2020 election, mailed everyone in the county applications for mail-in ballots — in the next legislative session, Texas outlawed that, by saying people had to request them. It goes on and on.
Texas is more purple than people realize, but holy shit the cards are stacked against us.

As a Canadian I hope you are paying attention to the rights to strike in Ontario being destroyed.

I’m not going to lie but the fact that other countries are watching us being governed by dumbass Republicans is fucking embarrassing ?
Housemaster
Us Canadians shouldn't throw rocks in glass houses...
thedarkcanuck
If only there were more than two options
blaghart
It's called "Voter suppression", it's how you "legally" rig an election, and it's why Texas stays GQP.
ucandcantunc
buh muh gunz….

Believe when I say that many Americans can't believe it either. I can't understand how women especially could approve of these soulless
StarscreamAndHutch
As a texan, it does have a reason. We all know it and they admit it. Its the only way for them to control those 40EC votes. If those swung?
SnarfyMcSnarferson
I hope this winter brings an artic blast to texas
AntRam95
#1 considering ted cruz is Canadian I would say that Canada came in and left us a bowl of coleslaw made with raisins and shelled walnuts
StoicHoneyBadger
Born in Canada to an American and a Cuban. Only lived there for 3 years so we really shouldn't blame Canada for Two-Faced Ted. All his fault
AntRam95
They created bieber, there is evil in those lands

Primotimewaster
As an American, I wholeheartedly agree with #2.
sfrinlan
"Have you considered the impact of all those puppies on the economy?" or "Breeders will have their products devalued and jobs will be lost!"
usernamemorelikeusershame
You agree with #2? You voted for the diarrhea??
MaximilianShade
"I paid for MY puppy, so why should I have to pay for THOSE people to be given a puppy! I'd rather shit myself forever so -they- have to!"
MaximilianShade
Fuckers.
ManintheMountain
It's a zero sum game for them, "I got my puppy, you don't get your puppy, because I got mine". Insanity.
ADDGirl
It's having a vote between oatmeal & dogshit and having almost half of the room saying quiet because they think their vote doesn't matter.
Blacktusk
Hey Buddy, Canadians elected Doug Ford. Have a pleasant day now, eh?
gobblinal
Yeah, not ALL of Canada is perfect, but some places are a little bit more perfect than others. We're trying.
obarey
#2 but I don't want other people to have puppies!
lilmookieesquire
#1 TBF it's like watching 60% refused to eat, and 20% actively eating dogshit because "oatmeal is gross".
CaptCrobar
This winter is going to be brutal. Good luck Texans hopefully less than 246 people die this time around.
hotforbagels
It was actually like 700 :-(
capitalistdecadence
With food like this, is there any other choice than diarrhea forever?
Soberyn
Oh God not this shit again.
Gael78II
diarhhea?
MKUltraMega
forever.
gorillaClutch
Yep. Fellow Texan here. There's comfort in knowing they essentially started with a 3 touchdown lead and only won by a field goal.
TodOberhaus
Helps when they keep moving the goal post for themselves.
jkirshy81
How so? Looking at the results it seems like the state is still mostly red. Abbott got re-elected by 1M votes.
gorillaClutch
Voter suppression is real here. The illusion of Texas being solid red keeps a lot of people from trying because "whats the point?"
Dannyalcatraz
A lot of that lead is down to gerrymandering and voter suppression, as some state GOP leaders have been caught saying.
Dannyalcatraz
Such as: https://www.newsweek.com/texas-ag-says-trump-wouldve-lost-state-if-it-hadnt-blocked-mail-ballots-applications-being-1597909?amp=1
override367
Beto might have had a chance if he hadn't fucked the entire Democratic party by telling Republicans, yes, we will confiscate your guns-
override367
despite zero democrats in leadership advocating for such a thing nor does it follow and previous regulations
gorillaClutch
I appreciate the honesty of the moment. It mirrored so many peoples real frustration with inaction on gun violence but yep. Not a smart move
StoicHoneyBadger
#2 Except that in a lot of states, the diarrhea wins.
whitegirlcanteven
It's awful how many people either don't or can't vote. The fact that Biden didn't declare a fed holiday pisses me off.
hoopyhoop
Doug Ford
lepoggies
As a 20+ yr Texan, I can't agree with the last sentence more than anything!!!!!
stankginchfurbuger
More like "beat this puppy to death in front of you" vs '"puppy gets a few head pats... For now"
Bunnies007
It's ridiculously easy to vote in the UK, and yet voter fraud is absolutely minimal. The trouble in the US is that the spectre of voter >
Bunnies007
fraud has become so real, that to make voting easier will just invite it. You've fucked yourselves, America.

JillOfTheJpg
When my sister explained voting in Canada to the newly immigrated Texans on her street they actually cried.
sfrinlan
Is there more context to this? What's voting like in Canada?
ManintheMountain
Yea, I want to know more as well. They cried because they can't game the system, or because the voting system actually makes sense?
JillOfTheJpg
The ease and accessibility of voting - and the options not being dog shit.
JillOfTheJpg
Some places have stated doing voting on the internet. I voted that way in the recent municipal and regional election.
JillOfTheJpg
You get your card in the mail, bring it to the polling place (there’s rarely a line of more than 2-3 ppl waiting) and you vote. 10mins tops
sfrinlan
I got my ballot in the mail, filled it out at home, and dropped it at the place the next day. I'm not following what's remarkable
