Just so you know, Imgur is a hosting site and the vast majority of its users don't interact with "the community" at all. In fact, most people would actually consider it an improvement to the site if the social features were to be removed.

Trouble is, considering the state of modern capitalism, I'd bet they don't care about the site or even potential ad income because there's probably some bullshit accounting trick/tax loophole that will make it more valuable to them if Imgur fails.
If it keeps plodding along and gets some ad income for them, fine. When it falls apart, and they can sell off the copper in the walls, even better.

They own both ends of the loan process for this venture. They only lose money if, somehow, Imgur becomes a perfectly balanced entity that neither loses nor gains money. Otherwise, they use losses to flatten ttax load, load and use profits to pad the sale price of the assets. The only way to beat them is to be average, go unsold, and drain their maintenance budget over years and years, but then they make ad revenue from the porn and scam ads they're serving us.

This is exactly how some venture capitol takeovers work: they leverage the loan used to purchase the company against the company's existing debt so when it goes bankrupt it doesn't touch the investors at all. They just collect the profits until it's time to fire-sale what's left because the court says so. It's a pretty standard practice these days.

They said the Red Lobster bankruptcies were because of the endless shrimp promo. What really happened was a venture capital company bought them, made them sell every property they owned, pocketed the profit then let them fail because they had to lease back the property they owned.

imgur is pretty dead, tbh. I check it out once in a while. But top of the front page posts have like 400 upvotes. That was 15,000 8 years ago. Most of the content, like everywhere, feels like it's a small percentage of mega-users, bots, and trolls. Reddit is much the same with content issues, but beneath the heaps of garbage there's still people.

The 15k numbers were probably the tail end of being inherently linked to Reddit. That switch happened like 9 years ago or so. Imgur when isolated as it's own thing was ALWAYS much much smaller scale. It is even smaller now though, for sure.

Ironically, Tumblr seems to be holding up relatively well. I looked back at my old account I made for some unknown reason ages back, and while the 'homepage' feed now basically looks like bluesky or twitter, the 'explore' seems to be much more like Imgur's grid-like content feed. And not a single piece of AI slop to be found that I could identify.

S3ndpics isn't bad from the few times I've been. Imgpile is a lot of underage/CP type stuff and people are reporting the site.

Yea there's s3nd.pics which seems to be the best alternative at the moment. There's also cdn.imgpile.com but it doesn't seem to be as community oriented as a platform. There's also imgcat.io but it's still in some kind of semi closed beta state.

A lot more like old imgur. If I recall correctly the person who spun it off is someone who was active in the community since those days (we're talking like at least 10 years ago) and bringing back that environment was their main reason to make their own site.
