Hmm, I want something crunchy, crunch, no not popcorn, crunch, not cereal, crunch, hey! Who at all the chips in this bag in my hand???!!
Shaodyn
I don't think food companies wanted to include nutrition information, so they made serving sizes super tiny so the info would be useless.
galapas
Then you finish the bag and realize chips weren’t what you wanted and reach for something else
iloveyourmom2
Every bag of chips is family size if your a orphan.
*You're *an
thevortexmaster
Not me. A full size bag of chips would easily last me a week if I was single
PhailRaptor
Depends on the packaging. The kinds I buy have recently shrunk. A bag used to last me a week, now it's 2 sittings.
No doubt. If I buy a kind my family doesn't like it lasts me quite a bit
prufock
Only 10?

A "serving size" is just a measure of food, not how much you actually eat. Also... the US has a major obesity problem.
SuperRockinMrMagic
In this case it's like a scoop of chips for those of us that don't eat a party size bag of lays at once. I mean I want to I just don't
Yeah. People be like "I could eat an entire party size bag" well... that's an entire days worth of calories. It's just called restraint.
Dracology
Its not what they expect people to eat its what they think they can put on the side of a bag to make it look reasonable.
LackadasicalGoblin
Your chips make it to the pantry? Mine bearly make it home
Hawkgirl203
I multiply amount of servings per bag and calories per serving because that’s my serving size. I’m eating the whole bag.

I just ate a tube of pringles. I'm disgusted and I hate myself. I want more.

That's not actually what "serving size" means
koboshi
Giving big info on package how much kcals is in serving and not in the whole thing does more harm than not writing it at all.
You can count kcals in whole thing yourself but if instead of “in portion” they would give the kcals in while think I would think twice
*in whole thing. My autocorrect is killing me.
The number would probably scare me. 150kcal in portion sounds neat but I’ll probably eat whole package which is 800ish kcals. Not so neat.
butthurtnevergetsbetter
Serving sizes aren't about what humans eat. They're about keeping a low calorie count "per serving".
AnathemaNoreh
Actually no, legally they have to be based off what people eat. They take nationwide surveys and the serving size is based on what actual /
people say they actually eat. So serving sizes are small because regular people lie about how much they really eat
Kbantar
Low everything. It's a bitch to see all the 0 something only to see it listed as an ingredient. Under 1 gm per serving can be rounded down.
Ghostman0
U continue eating chips while ur really looking for something else u want lol

"Experts" == people who want to make the calorie count look good.
LegendaryGrumpyCat
Serving size = half a chip. Oh look they are only 10 calories a serving! SMH
researchonyourown
1 serving 130 calories. So a bowl would be 1,300 calories for a small snack. That's like at least 12 bananas worth.
1) I mean... maybe where you live there's a mandate of 1 serving == 130 calories. That is not the case in the US. With that kind of mandate,
2) what would be the serving on something like a diet soda, or water, with zero calories?
3) Imagine the warning labels required on water. "Serving: ∞ Warning: One serving may kill you."
"Experts" = people obeying the law and basing nutrition labels on what the average person eats.
Uh huh. There's a thread. Feel free to read it. Or not.
I saw your comments, but your assumption on how serving is size is incorrect so I commented outside of that thread
1) You're clearing up something that appears to be implicit, that's fair enough. But you've essentially already agreed with my comments.
This is set by the FDA, it's not chosen by each company, so all chip bags should have a 30g serving size
joot
Experts: public health experts trying to bring down the number of overweight and obese people from 80% of the population.
Serving sizes are, by law, meant to be how much a person typically consumes, not a suggestion of how much one should.
Kittynomnoms
Which is why I always laugh when I see a block of instant ramen that says "Serving size: 1/2 package"
So what’s the penalty potato chip manufacturers are facing for breaking this law? Since the consensus is apparent.
1) No clue, ask the FDA. My guess is the regulation requires something like survey data and participant responses to be used to decide what
2) a serving size is, self-report data is notorious for being unreliable. Kinda like witness responses.
Actually the amounts are set by the FDA, and a potato chip serving size is 30g. They can use # of chips, cups, etc. But has to = 30g
frenofafren
Wait, are you blokes talking about crisps?
MaryToddLincolnTownCar
Potato chips or invented in New York, therefore we are more correct, though crisps make more sense.
Noodlesocks
The reason America calls fries 'fries' is because by the time America discovered chips, they were already using the term for crisps.
Psytrese
That's an Urban Myth. They were invented in England by William Kitchiner.
LordCommanderTomSnow
Could be tortilla chips. Do British people call those tortilla crisps?
I don't think we have that. We just use Doritos for the same basic purpose which are indeed crisps.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
Do you call all of them Doritos even if they aren't Doritos brand? Like in Canada and I assume the US, there's a brand called Tostitos /1
which is closer to actual tortilla chips than Doritos. And they're mostly sold plain, with just salt, not covered in cheese like Doritos. /2
You use them for making nachos, dipping in guac, etc. Do you have such a thing? What do you call them if you do? I'm just curious. :) /3
Sright, mate. Yanks think chips are french, too. Madlads.
5thAveSmugglerForHire
I haven't called them French fries in years, just fries. Most menus do the same thing here in the states.
WhistlinDickC
Thanks Osama.
blumpk1npie
Isn't that due to the whole "freedom fries" debacle after France wouldn't support one of the recent wars?
We've called them fries in Canada for decades. I think it's just the normal way words tend to get shortened over time. There's no other /1
item we call "fries", so putting the French in front of it is unnecessary. /2
drduffer
Yeah. Crisps are chips in the US and maybe Canada too, come to think of it. US folks will call you weird for calling them crisps.
Of course Brits call cookies “biscuits” so maybe you are weird.
Someshithead241
No, we call biscuits biscuits and cookies cookies. You're the one that calls them the wrong name. There's a difference between a cookie
And a biscuit.
JenkinsEar
That difference being...?
Where were they invented and what was the original name?
England 1817 crisps.
Hahaha I meant cookies/biscuits but thanks!
gerschmann
1544, when the kitchen staff of Derwyn, Earl of Biscuit-on-Groat accidentally produced a batch of small, dry cakes.
Originally known as 'Cookeys', owing to the dryness and long baking time, they came to adopt a regional name, Biscuit.

Then you pour the bowl, and stand there for a bit longer to eat 10 more because the bowl doesn't fit as many as you thought it would.

Family size? But I just ate the whole thing! What now?
Isi151e
Yeah, that's what the bag is for. Using a bowl is just eating chips with extra steps
The two step method is preferable 1. Open bag 2. Eat chip. Unless we're bringing salsa/dip
SabonVous
if you tuck the bottom corners of the bag in you can have a makeshift bowl.
If you buy chips @ costco because the unit price is amazing, that's NOT a bowl you will ever be able to finish w/o at least several friends.
