One of the greatest Authors of our time; Salman Rushdie was stabbed several times just before he was about to give a lecture in New York State.
Ayatollah Khomeini instigated a fatwa in 1988 calling for his death after Salman released The Satanic Verses in ‘87. Khomeini thought that the book was offensive to Muslims and painted a bad picture of their prophet Mohammed.

The attacker stabbed him several times damaging his throat, eye, arm and liver. It took 5 people to pull the guy off Salman. Mr Rushdie’s agent says the news is not good and he will probably lose an eye, has liver damage and severed nerves in his arm. Hopefully Salman who has been an important voice for freedom of speech will pull through.

He was rushed to a local hospital for surgery soon after the attack

I have a deep respect for this man who has always claimed that the Ayatollah misinterpreted his book on purpose and didn’t even read it in full.
Despite having to live a large portion of his life in hiding he has been a strong voice in the fight for freedom of speech.

This is what he gets for dissing the great flying spaghetti monster

Khomeni realized it painted a bad picture of him and told muslims it painted a bad picture of their prophet Mohammed.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

In the time of the Prophet, he himself used to ignore people who mocked him. Never issued kill orders. Clerics on th other hand...

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

It's always the people who try to change the world for the better who get/ almost get assassinated. I wish him a speedy recovery

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I hope this incident serves as a stark reminder and a wake-up call for the West; Islam is *not* like other religions. It's Nazism for Arabs.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People aren't stabbed or beheaded for drawing unfunny cartoons of Jesus, Thor, Vishnu or the Buddha. There is only one "religion" like this.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Religion is brain cancer that metastasizes to other people's brains.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Write on you magnificent bastard.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

When someone says "I'll kill you if you say that. ", it's time to start yelling it.

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 4

Hopeppl will not take these religious threats so lightly anymore. This fatwah is more than 30yrs most ppl have forgotten but not fundamentals

Religious fanatics true colours shine through once again

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Yeah nothing says 'our religion isn't bad' like a formal decree calling for someone's murder from a religious leader.

4 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 4

Weee-eeell. Not just a religious leader, a secular one too. And it's not like presidents dont have people killed

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 21

zealots. When will people realize one side snubs you if you're racist and the other tries to fuckin kill you if you insult their sky daddy.

4 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 21

The people who attack "cancel culture" are just attacking criticism of their work. "Cancel culture" is critical speech.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 14

I lost a lot of respect for the guy. Speaking against cancel culture is just giving excuses for racists.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 9

What shocks me how very few Islamic organisations condemn such attacks. As they say if you're silent you're supporting the perpetrator.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And when they do, they make sure to add that it "has nothing to do with islam".. wink wink nudge nudge

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Alright, I guess this as good a place to ask as any- what exactly IS "The Satanic Verses"?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is a very good book Rushdie wrote. A wonderful piece of fiction (!). And there is this rumour about the Qur‘an having had verses removed.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It refers to verses from the Quran attributed to a female author.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Satanic Verses were verses of the Qur'an that, according to Muhammad himself, were revealed to him by Satan pretending to be the ->

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

-> Archangel Gabriel (who normally provided revelations) and as such, had to be expunged from the earliest Qur'anic sources.

Religion is a scourge.

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 9

Exactly, it's been thinning out the population for hundreds of years. Just a complete scapegoat

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember vividly his book coming out. It was so controversial. I thought he had been in hiding basically ever since?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

He has been in hiding for decades, but in recent years Rushdie has gradually relaxed the security, saying "I have to live my life". Well...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This sends a chilling signal that even after 30 years, they will remember and get to you. A huge win for the religious fanatics.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Which religious beliefs specifically motivated this attempted murder?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rushdie is the victim of a fundamentalist Islamic Fatwa declared by Ayatollah Khomeni, the leader in Iran 33 years ago. Here: >

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Yes, this is ongoing. When it began it was a huge deal.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hey, don't compare people to nuts. At least nuts are useful.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Although both are deadly for some people,

I fucking hate people. I hate that he's had to live his life in fear for writing a book. I'm glad that he's going to survive.

4 years ago | Likes 430 Dislikes 8

It will definitely impact his length of life though. I also fucking detest people. Most of them are conplete idiots which is fine. But some of them are also violent. Which to me marks them as pathetic.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And this is why I fucking hate religion. Doesn’t matter if it’s islam or Christianity… all based on the same bullshit fiction.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nutcases are everywhere, it's just more dangerous when lots and lots of people urge them on constantly, ie with Trump

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It is nowhere near certain that he will survive. He is on ventillator, and his liver was stabbed and damaged.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

FWIW, the liver is the one organ that regenerates

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's some comfort. I really hope that he will make it. He managed to elude them for so long, he deserves to die peacefully at an old age.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty much. This is not the first attempt. His translator was already murdered years ago from it, and many attempts were made before.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

3 translators were murdered. I checked.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not confirmed. But the Iranian government still has a 3 million dollar bounty on his head.

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

3 million doesn't go very far when you have legal bills to pay - and you're still stuck in prison.

He's probably glad he got knifed in the face instead of shot in the face. People who get shot in the face often don't live to be glad.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Even if it wasnt, the fact there are islamists still incensed by a book he wrote 30yrs,speaks volumes to a subset of the religions adherents

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

It’s nuts. If you’re so confident in what you believe why feel threatened to the point of violence

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Atleast in the islam belief. Its writtrn that its okay to commit violence to blasphemers.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A book, that by any reading is harmless, at worst, entertaining at best.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not officially no. After over 30 years the fatwa kinda ran out of steam but it only takes one crazy bastard.

4 years ago | Likes 194 Dislikes 4

It’s been updated and the reward increased multiple times. It’s deft still active.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Much like how she a married person is murdered, the spouse is the first suspect, if someone has a fatwa on them, well…

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

"Her ex-husband tried to murder her for years, and successfully killed several people around her. But how can we be sure he killed her?"

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

*she=if; not sure how THAT typo happened.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and many attempts have been made before, also on three translators and his publisher, one was killed, and dozens bystanders burned to>

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A translator/publisher in Norway was shot three times outside of his home in the late 90s luckily he survived

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

< death when they tried to kill his Turkish translator with a bomb. The motive for this stabbing is not rocket science.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The fatwa was old, but the bounty was recently increased, renewing public interest in him in the Iranian community.

4 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Bounty? There's money involved? I always thought it was a 'religious call' isn't that straight up ordering a murder?

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Many Muslim communities have ratified the fatwa even recently + it's currently still valid for at least few countries like Iran and India.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

When Khomeini issued the fatwa it included a $3M reward. Another $500k was added in 2012 by a "quasi-official" religious foundation.

There is no such thing as cancel culture. No one has been canceled.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 12

"Cancel culture" is definitely a thing, as is "cancelling" someone. It's a relatively new term, I think, but it is a term.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Oh good lord he's a fucking moron. Attacking "cancel culture" is about censoring criticism.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 25

There's a difference between "criticism" and "not letting someone speak because you disagree."

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Boycotts are 100% a form of criticism. Only morons think shutting down criticism is pro speech.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Boycotting is perfectly fine. Don't go if you don't want to. I'm talking about not letting someone speak.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Boycotting takes away people's venues. You can't "not let someone speak" without violence.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5
