I pay more taxes in the blue state I live in now. But last year when I hurt my back (not work related) and was bedridden for months, social safety measures paid my medical bills and replaced most of my income. I came out of that medical emergency MORE FINANCIALLY STABLE THAN I WENT IN. If I still lived in the red state we moved from, me and my family would be homeless.
Well worth the investment.

As someone living in Washington, who knows someone who moved to one of those "lower cost of living" states, and now has to contend with the lack of job possibilities, lack of social safety net, and general lack of things to help you live easier, yeah, choose where you live wisely. My state is super expensive, but I choose it and all of the benefits of that, vs living cheaply in bumfuck nowhere.

But Idaho state income tax only has 1 5.3% bracket so at $60k/yr, California is $450 lower LOL

Geographically, I want nothing more than to live in Florida. But all of the people there have turned what could be the US's own tropical paradise into a cesspool of shitty trash. The worst people in the country live in the best part of it, and it pisses me off. I still say we give Texas to MAGA. Just let them all move there. There's plenty of room for them, they can govern themselves and do whatever they want... and then we build a wall around it to make sure they stay there.
