We have sparrows that nest on our front porch every year. June is typically when the fledglings get rowdy and start zooming all over the place.

No way are they sparrows. Martins probably.

Oh yeah those are definitely barn swallows
CraftyCyborg
My parents home has an identical porch and they get nests in that exact same spot. I hope you enjoy your friends’ presence!

We live in state of mutual bemusement with our annual house guests.
CraftyCyborg
Sadly my parents are grumps about the birds and chase them off (they slanted the spot so nothing can perch). Scrooges, both of them!
Timheretoo
Those are Gulps. You can tell because they’re a lot bigger than Swallows.

Forked tail ? Might be purple martins, much more desirable than invasive and scummy english house sparrow
BritishBenzene
Forked tails. I’m not a bird person, but my parents are (they have Martin boxes) and said these are sparrows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
BritishBenzene
Per Google they’re probably swallows. Red on the neck, off-white to brown belly, and a much more pronounced swallow-tail than a Martin.

The purple martins where I live (TX) are very territorial and like to swoop down to attack me when I'm mowing my backyard near my birdhouse.
BritishBenzene
Years past they’ve been aggressive (scared the hell out of the UPS guy). Now they seem acclimated to us. They swoop, but won’t come close.

I haven’t tried giving them rum, but given my liquor cabinet they’re more likely to get bourbon, vodka, or tequila. We’re not a rum family.

I was just adding a sparrow.

I got it. But now I’m thinking of having a squad of drunk birds protecting my front door. What could go wrong?
