I hate getting presents

Dec 27, 2025 1:57 AM

I can't explain enough to people how much I hate receiving presents. Plus, I usually receive things I have no use for, and people expect me to be thrilled about how clever they were for getting me the thing.

If they want to listen to what I really need, I always ask for contributions towards my kids post-secondary education savings. That is really important to me, not a bowl that just takes up more space or a gift card that I have to register to use.

I don't want more crap. I was pressed for a gift idea and I said I wanted really good dish soap. They laughed and bought me chocolate. Even though they know I've been working hard for months to eat better... Which creates more dishes for me to wash... Which is why I wanted dish soap.

Sorry if it's your favourite time of the year and I'm being a downer. I just can't stand the season.

I convinced the adults in our family to stop exchanging gifts. We only give to the kids now. It’s way better.

Since, aheh, I'm here:

You can opt out. Years ago I just told my family and friends I wasn't going to give any presents for any holidays or anything and I'd prefer not to receive them. ..and I just stopped. I still give presents to people sometimes, but never on any holiday or birthday, and I never get "obligation presents."

I remember how much I stressed birthdays, anniversaries, Xmas, etc. ...I haven't even bought a greeting card but once since Y2K. It feels good. I'm free. Try it?

Lmao I'll take your holiday chocolate. Coming from someone who never gets presents of any type really, shit the fuck up and be grateful. It's not just about you. It's about the others expressing their feelings in an objectified way. Sorry people don't care enough about you to keep getting you gifts. You didn't have to eat the chocolate.

Sounds like you dislike your family more than you dislike the season.

I don't like giving presents, so cheers. Most I'm gonna do for you is make joint food plans or joint joint plans. I smoke people up on Christmas

Nah, when receiving gifts turn into this weird social ritual that you must overact positively for, it's horrible.

This is why you re-gift everything.

Same. Keep your social obligations to your self.

All I wanted was a dish soap. Just one dish soap. And she wouldn't give it to me. Just a dish soap.

You have nothing to apologise for.

we all struggle at times so no hate. I also have mental health issues and this current timeline isn't helping. :\

It took the death of my father, including being a few weeks before Christmas, to make me stand there and realize we all had plenty of stuff, and don't need to add to the clutter. And to go through so much of his stuff, throwing away so much, made me realize how much clutter I already had.

9 years later, I still don't ask for any physical stuff each year. Other family feel upset I hardly show gratitude for more stuff, even with the previous situations.

I gift consumable stuff to avoid adding to clutter. Foods, coffees/teas, alcohol, etc. You can get someone a higher-quality version of something they like but would never spend the extra money on, or find gift/variety packs or foreign or novelty versions.

Another good non-clutter gift is tickets to an event they would enjoy. More tricky with them needed to have the time available though.

I like giving gifts, often takes me all year to find the right things for the people I care for. But the gifts are inexpensive and have to be either useful in a way I know they need or consumable in one form or another. Also in regards to dish soap, go basic as they all have effectively the same ingredients, my preference is just standard palmolive, but that's more because it's gentler on skin, never had an issue getting anything off. Just clean as you go or immediately after you are done.

But also giving gifts for christmas is kind of secondary to my favorite things about christmas, which is primarily an increased chance of seeing the people important to me, but also I just enjoy the winter and hearty foods.

Most people don't put in this much thought. People without empathy should not be giving gifts.

That would be a lot of people not buying crap to give! Won't anyone think of the economy?! /s
