#28 Mechanical inaccuracy aside, I actually *like* how technology is used to make tasks easier, especially undesirable tasks like driving. Unlike many contrasts between the US and Europe, I think this is one difference where the US solidly made the better choice.

driving is a desirable privileged to me, because i have to work hard to afford to do it, and it lets me go to far away places with lots of trees and neat rocks. that said, i barely know how to drive stick.

Well, probably a lot of that is from being in a society that has underinvested in rail, mass transit, and walkable societies. Driving should be a choice, not a requirement.

Yeah, fair I suppose. I personally never liked being outdoors so much and am generally fine with just seeing photographs of things instead of seeing it in person, so I never really had an interest in travel.

then we are different people, and that is fine. i would support more mass transit, more trains, more investment in walkable communities. those are good for people. i'd just live a bit further away, where i could still go out and away. my country is enormous, it's impossible to rapid transit the whole thing to the point that i have no more nature to go seek solitude in.

Sadly, one of the reasons that old tech lasts so long, is because they weren't shy about using stuff like lead, mercury, chlorofluorocarbons, or asbestos when it was the most durable and effective thing to use. They didn't need or want to care if it poisoned their workers, their customers, or the world at large. (They still don't, but we have some laws in place to make them pretend)
