When I initially saw this at a yard sale, I thought maybe it was an old microscope or telescope. Figured I might pick it up as something cool for my bookcase.

Still in its original shipping container and 40 years old. Shipped in this box in 1979.

Wait. What does that say on the shipping label?

Scientology Mission of Bellevue Washington. Well what do we have here?

The Book Introducing The E-Meter by L Ron Hubbard

Inside were three handbooks. Plus an envelope from the Hubbard Electrometer Dept.

Scientology waits for no man. This document mailed out Christmas Eve 1979

Warranty card dated December 1989. With a reminder that it is not intended for any medical purpose.

Previous owner never completed the warranty card. Which also states that only a sincerely enrolled student or minister is permitted to obtain an E-meter. Seems I am not permitted to possess this one.

Apparently this one was made by Bob Montgomery. And is crafted of fine American walnut.

Technical diagrams

More technical info

“By itself, this meter does nothing.” Well that’s a relief.

Diagnosing common errors

Were you protesting??? Well were you? Answer the question!

Wow there are a lot of common errors

Did you go clear and no one would let you declare?

On to the books. Three of them. Clearing series one, three, and four. Wasn’t a two in the box.

A reminder again that this is a religious artifact and no doctor, scientist, or imgur shitposter is permitted to have one.

Apparent moist hands and wrong can size are the causes of many problems. I’m not making that up.

An ad to buy your own E-Meter. The internet tells me that $215 in 1979 is roughly $800 in today’s money. Someone payed the equivalent of $800 for this.

I’ve heard terms like “preclear” tossed around and always wondered. But this preclear checklist is amazing. If you don’t zoom in on any other pics in this post, please zoom in on this one.

Scientology is srs bsns. Now tell me which of these 98 colors you like best!

Finally some technical info. Or a picture of a guy holding a box anyway.

The resistance of a dead female body is... wait whut???

Printed circuit and fully transistorised for your pleasure.

Now that’s nifty. The lid comes off and flips around to stand it up better.

These must be the wrong size cans I’ve heard so much about.

Reminder that Tom Cruise believes squeezing tin cans like this is a religious experience.

To be successful, know your needle

Oh man I wish I could be there to see a rock slam in person.

Alright. Enough with the books. Let’s see what the equivalent of $800 bought you forty years ago. Looks like some cable and alligator clips.

My very own tin cans. I sure hope they aren’t the wrong size.

And the handmade American walnut box. Good job Bob Montgomery wherever you are.

Apparently it was last certified in January 1980 and has been expired since 1981. $215 bucks and back in the closet in a year.

By itself, this meter does nothing. This time in a pretty red label.

Finally she’s open. A reminder that this cost more than an Atari 2600 (which was just $199 in 1979).

Sure enough the lid flips as advertised. Really a nice feature.

Looks like they tried selling it before for $50 and then marked down to $30. I paid $25. But it’s worth it for the updoots I might get before the Scientology police break down my door for unauthorized possession of a religious artifact.

FP EDIT: Thanks for the updoots! Send whatever you like, I enjoy getting mail. Reports of my suicide have been greatly exaggerated.

No, I have not attempted to use the machine. It has 40 year old NiCd batteries that are supposed to be charged for 28 hours before using. Sadly, while the box did include the cans and machine and cable for the cans, it did not include the power cord to charge the batteries.

I was able to make it back to the yard sale before it closed and I asked if they had any other books related to the machine. Sure enough, after a bit of digging, I am now the proud owner of the third edition of the Volunteer Minister's Handbook. https://i.imgur.com/Q19PttX.jpg All 677 pages of it, complete with exactly the sort of beautiful color photos you might expect of Scientology Ministers. Leading a council of churches. Ministering to Catholic nuns. Sitting down with the Chief of Police to go over crime initiatives. If there is interest, I will give it its own post.

Until then, keep being awesome.

You're about to be Epsteined.

6 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

Open the cans. Open them. Please please please open them!

6 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Sadly the cans are pre-emptied. With notches cut so the alligator clips get a better bite.

Probably in same place that pic depicted of a woman wrapped , in pics op showed.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Something tells me they had a few dead women to choose from to photograph

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hubbard has a number of murders associated to him, just not proven.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The religion has a history of women disappearing.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op be careful they will come after you lol

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Imgur office is already filled with subpoenas for all of the information they have on op.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: this is the first time I've seen the word subpoenas written out, and it's the complete opposite of what I expected :P

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Might you be able to explain to me why this should be kept secret?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Obviously, to the vast majority of the population, there is no reason it "should be" secret.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the clarification!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Scientology is a nutjob cult designed to make money. As part of the nutjob cult image, they try to act like their bullshit is all a secret.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

"#82: WAS SOMETHING ELSE WRONG? Locate it and sort it out." ...Gee, thanks. So helpful.

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

How about posting a photo of the innards, especially the top of the printed circuit board so we can decode to an actual circuit diagram.

6 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

its prolly just few pieces of wires and resistors and it does horseshit...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure they're literally just ohmmeters.

6 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

Ya, it basically states that in the manual. I’d just like to know *exactly* how it works.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Im pretty sure you wont be able to tell from the schematics how it detects body theatans.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think it works like a Ouija Board, but it will vary based on sweat and how hard they grip the paddles. Add subconscious feedback and it'll

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

look like stuff is happening. With a fairly open interpretation like Tarot cards it can be made to seem to mean something.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you want OP dead?

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Gonna happen anyway, might as well make himself useful.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

There's half a volt running through it. OP can take that

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

uh...you know that's not at all what they mean, right?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

1979 was 40 years ago?! Shit.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

IKR?!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was the most surprising part of this post to me lol. They said 49 years and I was like “So 1950ish.”

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

SHHHHHHHHhhhhh. the 2000s never happen

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For those asking: I haven’t tried to use it. It requires 28 hours of charging first per the manual. And the NiCd batteries are 40 years old.

6 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Just usenormal batteries...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Send it to Leah Remini to use on her show debunking Scientology so that the world can see what a load of crap it is.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So what is the weirdest thing you own?

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Have you thought about reselling this? I know I have always wanted one as a collectors piece

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Fucking Tom cruise over here trying to pull a a fast one on us

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

As of this comments, 4 Scientologists have discovered your post. Expect a rapid series of downvotes outweighing the upvoting soon-ish.

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

45 more minutes later, only up to 6.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was thinking within next 24-48 hours which would prompt follow-up posts. Meh, my soon is longer than yours.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean are there enough Scientologists for that?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There’s at least enough of them to become so rich (the “church”, rather) it’s scarier living among them than ‘1984’ would be.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought that they weren't allowed on the web for fear of finding out the truth.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP: proof that Scientology and their acolytes are totally nuts and probably a danger to society.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Does @OP need a mossberg? I have one for sale at a measly $800. Best used for keeping cultists away. Also, it comes with super Mario bros 3

Thankfully, They’ve done it so much that I believe the courts have caught on

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They disappear people to slave ships.

6 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

No, they do disappear people.

6 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

They killed several people and have a prison ship that doesn't leave international water and a ship for children for reeducating them.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fair Game. Suppressive Persons. Scientology is legit, actually factually scary shit. They ain't just doofuses like Travolta and Cruise.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they don't Epstein, they lawyer the problems away

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Your eyes stink"

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I concur

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don’t understand that part. Is it if they say those lines then they’re clear? What do they mean?

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Just someone in the process of being "cleared" Imagine it like the withdrawal symptoms of drugs I suppose. "The world is brighter" many

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

ex-smokers describe taste as being more extreme. That sorta thing

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So, if they say any of those lines, then you know they’re clear? Or if they don’t say them then they’re clear?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No if they say them then they know they are further along the process

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Huh. Thanks for explaining!
