A year ago today, I had a really bad pain in my stomach. My wife also had really bad stomach pain; I was sure mine was just gas -- I felt crazy bloated -- but we went to see her doctor and her doctor was sure she was having gall bladder issues. We left the office and got to the car when my pain suddenly started mounting massively.

I decided a trip to the ER was in order. Like an idiot, I drove there (my wife cannot drive due to narcolepsy). I should have called for an ambulance, despite the ER being only 7 minutes away down a very quick, lightly-trafficked highway. By the time we got there, I was stuck in a doubled-over position. They gave me a vomit bag, checked my vitals, and told me to wait. An ambulance would have had me in a room immediately. >:(

It wasn't long before the vomiting began. I was expelling 12-16oz. of fluid all at once. All told, I would be vomiting more in the next 24 hours than I have in my entire 34 years to date. My wails echoed throughout the ER. Nurses were impressed/horrified at how much I could eject in one go. (I was merely impressed.) They gave me massive doses of dilaudid for pain -- at one point, I just about went unconcious from it -- and unheard of doses of anti-emetics, but no amount of phenergan or ondansetron would abate the expulsions.

"I'm not nauseated," I told the attending surgeon.

"What." his expression told me.

"I don't feel like I have to vomit, I just am vomiting. It feels like there's too much."

So they put me in a CAT scan and found what appeared to be a blockage in my upper intestines. They jammed a tube down my nose and evacuated another liter or so of fluid out of my gut. Seems my digestive tract was on emergency overdrive, trying to figure out what was going wrong. They then shoved a massive amount of radioactive dye down said nose tube and did their damnedest to get as many x-rays as they could before I puked it all back up. This took about 6 tries and 2 hours, and in the end they couldn't see well enough to determine where, exactly, the blockage was -- they could pinpoint it in a 2-D cross-section, but not a 3-D one. Open surgery was called for.

Fortunately, the surgery didn't take nearly as long as expected and no significant damage had been done or yet been done. Somehow, a loop of intenstine had intertwined with another, causing a cinching and almost total blockage. The surgeon was able to manipulate this manually, no cutting required.

He told me later he was glad I came in when I did -- that if I had waited, I had a good chance of sections of intestine becoming gangrenous and going septic. I'm not sure how I could have possibly gone that long -- the pain was unbearable and the vomit infinite -- but I later read horror stories about people in the same situation who didn't seek medical treatment immediately.

To be slightly political, fuck the American Healthcare system -- but, at least I have insurance through my employer and through Medicare (for reasons unrelated to the intestinal trauma). Though I'm in dire straits for affording my Medicare premiums, which is some kind of absurd joke.

My gut is forever marred by a front-butt now.

This lovely lady helped me get through it, though, despite her own ongoing issues. I think she was frequently in more pain than I was. Then again, I had on-demand access to plenty of hydromorphone. All told, I was in the hospital for 7 days, and out of work for a couple months.

But wait, there's more! The wife went in for her own emergency surgery two weeks later. Her gall bladder function was nil -- 0% ejection. They think some source of inflammation resulted in internal scarring until it just couldn't work anymore. Despite the emergency nature of her hospital admission, it took like two days to have the actual surgery. They just kept her off food until they could get her in the OR.

What a shitty month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We weren't actually married at the time, but we were engaged by October, and got married on December 27th. After all we'd been through, both being broke and broken, and lovers of cooking and vidya, how could we not?

<3

TL;DR -- ah, whatever.

I can tell y'all that an ambulance Does Not get you a room faster. The severity of your issue does.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I only report what the surgeon told me. Maybe he just didn't think I should have driven.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was a twisted story man!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Twisted like my guts! :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why do you have to have a front-butt forever?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, I could get plastic surgery, but see how the stitches go all the way to my groin? The skin folds up into the seam on both sides.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey congrats! That must have been terrifying not knowing what was wrong

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was either delirious or have too much faith in modern medicine, but in between bouts of pain I was laughing a lot. :[

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not gonna lie to you. I mostly skimmed so I could get to the guts faster.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No problem. Something for everybody!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love a good gory post.. As long as everyone comes out alright. Glad you've got each other, that's nice :)

Nice beard. I wish you good health in the years to come !

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can't say you don't have guts

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Confirmed, I am not a Cylon. Or maybe this is just my elaborate cover story?!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why cutting around the navel ? It is not really a useful part of the body...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't expect them to go around, but maybe it's easier to seal up? They used glue and staples, though, so I dunno.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's common. Bellybuttons are made up of scar tissue.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is this at OHSU?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Answering my own question; that is OHSU. That building is closed up since they built a new flashy dental school on the waterfront

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure what the school of dentistry has to do with this but it really made me chuckle. I have my own lovely er adventure few years ago

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should give us your own storytime!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, and the School is just the old dental school at the teaching hospital my wife's surgery was at.

Woah man your guts they were just on my screen.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

(1/2) the contrast you drank isn't radioactive, its just radio-opaque so your GI tract shows up on X-ray.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah, I shouldn't have said radioactive. Brain fart.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2/2) but yeah, good thing you went in, bowel ischemia is probably one of the worst possible ways to die....

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey @GrannyLlama it's your favorite!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love an obstruction when we get to keep all the bowel! Best ever!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna wager this head either happened to you, or you are a surgeon? :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a soon to be surgical resident, 1 month til graduation! Congrats on keeping all your bowel!

Good luck you two, get well

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They cut thru my navel for my spinal fusion, then sowed me back up CROOKED. Ever button up a shirt and get 1 button off? That's my gut now..

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Which vertebrae did you need fused, and why (if you don't mind me asking)? I have C5-6 fused due to syringomyelia, might need C3-4 someday.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Man, my doctors are looking into syringomyelia for me. I'm not looking forward to any of that and really hoping I don't need any fusing!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck! Are you experiencing any neurological symptoms or pain? If not, try to hold off any any surgery. Risks can be significant. :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so everything is a whole mess of pain, crazy symptoms and confusion. Surgery is a terrifying 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...possibility but it might bring the pain down. Then there's hoping they don't find a chiari malformation!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

L4/L5, then C5~C7. Good times. NOT. now in pain management, which is threatened by these hillbilly pill-seeking opiate retards...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Eventually I will have to get my C3~C5 fused also. C fusions weren't too bad, really; gave relief. It was my lower fusion that got botched.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Man, that sucks. Totally feel ya on the opiates thing, too. Good luck on your future operations!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You too! Now let us go lie about our scars coming from fighting motorcycle gangs with broken whiskey bottles.

I didn't know the Amish supported modern medicine.

9 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

I have Amish friends and she had open heart surgery last year. So yes in case of life and death modern medicine is ok

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was tongue in cheek

Descended from Mennonites. :)

9 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Me too! Howdy!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whoa!!! ...was it the Mennonite that killed all the dinosaurs? How did your people survive in the void of space & the fiery re-entry?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're further descended from tardigrades.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Luckyyy...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would explain That, there's actually a dozen or so Mennonite colonies where I live.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Ohio? If so, I have distant cousins down that way.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Northern Canada actually.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0
