Hydraulic presses don’t melt steel beams
chrisf94
Why does it fold from the top instead on buckling, should it follow Eulers buckling once critical loading is reached?
IShouldBeStudyingRightNowInsteadOfBrowsingImgur
Basically its too short of a column. So it has a crippling failure which is a localized buckling failure of the web of the "pipe".

My friend is asking why it does that?
Its a crippling failure. Localized buckling of the column.. and then it happens again.. and again.. all the way down
So it's manufactured with the crumple points?
ZLOK
All the bends are the result of having to put the strain somewhere, it's just that the first leads to the second and so on.
No. The column is short enough that it is stable for a traditional buckling failure. The webs of the "pipe" here are what fail because 1/2
2 they are thin and the weak point. A longer column would buckle like normal. I suggest looking at bucking v crippling failure if interested

I'm impressed with how uniform it collapses. I would have expected it to buckle then bend and shoot out sideways.
