Their biggest problem were the proprietary brands. All were made by larger companies, but none of the Tandy/RS brands were recognized as being of great quality (even though some definitely were).

And it didn't help that the product designs seemed to be about 5 to 10 years (at best) behind modern trends, or that most products never got any kind of update at all. And way too many variations for single product categories. And So Much Faux Woodgrain.

Holy shit I just realized that there is an etiquette to blockbuster that we all learned as kids back then that is now useless. Things like how checkout worked, or rewinding the tapes.

Some of that existed prior to Blockbuster taking over the video tape rental market though. Most places prior charged a not-rewinding fee, and used the library system of checking out, returning, and checking in. Blockbuster just had the volume to meet the demand.

I do miss Radio Shack… shit breaks, or I’m building something and I have to order everything (way overpriced and in quantities way over or under what I need) on the internet… I know it was mismanaged and run by corporate idiots, but for someone who made and repaired stuff, it was great… (until the late 90s when they all became phone stores)

In my city what replaced the Radio Shacks were MicroCenters and dedicated hardcore hobby stores that didn't try to cater to wider audiences. Sometimes you just need a place where you can buy some resistors and a bucket of multi-farad capacitors for... reasons. I kinda miss when the Radio Shacks were like this, but yeah eventually it turned into a place where you couldn't even find a damn soldering iron and all they sold was crappy A/V cables.

There's a People Magazine article reference titled "Celebrating Every '80s Reference in That RadioShack Super Bowl Commercial", but it's no longer on their website. Archive.org might have something. My first computer did not have a drive. It booted off of a floppy disk and all the programs were on floppy disks.

My first two computers did not have floppy drives. I typed programs in by hand and saved them to cassette tapes. Finally I got a C64 with a floppy drive. First hard drive was much later, it was 40MB.
