I love the advice. We do need to safely let them do things, even evil or inconvenient things like spilling and all that “helping” us. Lots of research on countries that let their kids make messes trying things early on compared to those who don’t…those who do have way more self-sufficient kiddos at an earlier age.
Brilliant advice to follow up on the situation described. My parents were either absent, tired/lazy or fighting with each other, so there are several things I need to learn about the right way to parent. Suffered many an accident for my curious/motivated nature as a toddler due to lack of supervision
Most important parenting rule I've set for myself, (other than the obvious stuff like don't hit, lie, steal, etc) is that if my kid is doing something that I don't like, but it isn't hurting anyone, I make sure to examine what it is before I open my mouth. No sense in killing curiosity, creativity, or just being mean if the kid is just being a little strange at the moment (since we're all weirdos anyway)
Yes they are. Years ago I read about an experiment where they used some optical illusions to show toddlers a toy that either a) seemed to fly/defy gravity or b) seemed to pass through another solid object. Being given the object afterward, the toddlers experimented with it. Group A was more likely to throw the toy (will it fly again) while group B was more likely to bang the toy against a table etc. (will the toy pass through the table). Even young toddlers are doing science.
I, king of the Semantics, would like to point out that Bluey is 6, so not a toddler. This has no relevance on the point being made, but now it’s something you’re forced to know. Ha, take that!
Sure, sure.. But the thing they break might be yours, though, that might teach you a very valuable lesson in cause and effect. That’s why you follow to, at the very least, observe. Both our points have one thing in common though; meddle less, not more.
I loved watching this show with my nephew. Unfortunately, i liked it more than he did. Maybe in another year or two i can get him into it (he's almost 3).
There is a LOT of subtext and breaking down of complex issues into things you get kids have an easy time understanding and digesting in basically every episode of Bluey. For as silly as the clips (rightly) portray the show as being, there’s a lot of brilliant writing that goes into it for covering topics and concepts that kids may have a hard time understanding otherwise.
Like hiding the fact that Chili’s sister can’t have kids of her own and she doesn’t come around much because seeing Bluey and Bingo reminds her what she can’t have and she’s bitter at Chili even though she admits it’s not her fault and she wants to try to repair the relationship with her adult sibling in an episode about onesies.
Yep. I felt much safer when they were dragging a hammer and a box of nails to their room. On a side note: Step stools are easier to spot than a bunch of crayons. And you have no idea what those little shits can do with them in the staircase of an apartment building.
As a 4 year old I once got a stool and used it to open the front door and walk to my local park about a quarter of a mile away, all while it was already dark and they thought I was asleep. I think I almost killed my parents with stress that night
When I was 5 or 6 our dog got out. So my mom wouldn't get mad, I took my then 3 year old brother with me and we went to get the dog. My mom comes out to see the front door open and us gone and ran to get the neighbors to come look for us. We caught up with her down the street after getting the dog with her in tears walking with the neighbors.
It had a secondary lock at a bit below average adult eye level. I thought that was a typical set-up, the door to my current home has one at that height as well as the regular lock below the door handle
It might just be a regional thing, where I am we call them step stools when it's the kind that you use to reach a high shelf or something. It differentiates it from other kinds of stools (like bar stools), and in English the word stool also refers to poo. The image doesn't actually show a step stool though, it shows a small stool, like a mini bar stool, so it is a bit confusing to call it a step stool. Now the word stool has lost all meaning for me because I've written it too many times.
I did exactly this. I was fine, kids are very resilient. Bendy bones or some shit, idk. I was the 3rd of 3 boys, so... parental supervision was light, shall we say, and shenanigans were many lol.

Side note: of all the kids shows my kids have gotten into over the years: Bluey and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood have got to be best ones.

Bluey is a masterpiece but Daniel tigers neighborhood is some of the worst trash tv ever made imo

I've never seen the show outside a few clips, yet I can still hear this and the inflection used.

If the kids are quiet. That's the real danger. Nothing good ever happens when the kids are quiet - especially a toddler.
Ifekinlovesauerkraut
My brother and I were quiet kids. But we both have a little bit of the autism, so being quiet is quite normal for us.

nero4ty2
why would a 4 year old need a stool to reach a dead bolt? are people installing them at the top of the door now?
BeatsBearsBattlestarGallactica
I’ve had two apartments with one right above the doorknob and then a second one a bit below eye height. So like 5’8ish for the top lock.
nero4ty2
2 dead bolts? interesting, i've never seen anything like that outside of the hotel room latch things.
GWJYonder
You put them at the top of the door so that children can't reach them and let in charming strangers. 60% of the time it works every time.
Youhavinagiraffe

It's fairly common, but not universal. I have seen them at roughly doorknob height too, which is what I think the other person is envisioning.
