Every turtle i owned could flip itself back over given enough time and a surface that gave at least 1 foot some traction to start it. Maybe some cant and die that way. Maybe some species are better at it than others. I only owned sliders, snappers other water turtles though.
I had a desert tortoise growing up. He could flip himself most of the time, there was just some positions they can't get out from. Mostly hard, flat surfaces that don't really exist much in nature or they get wedged in. In their natural habitat, its just hundreds of miles of relatively flat desert and compacted sandy soil.
I assume that in every one of these videos there is a 99% chance the human flipped them over in the first place. How do you think it got on its back in the middle of a flat yard?
I wouldn’t assume all involve a human actively flipping them. More that human areas like flat level yards with vegetation mowed short and smooth vertical walls are particularly hazardous to them because they provide little purchase or leverage to help them right themselves.
Similar challenge w/ horses when they try to lay down in a stall or aisle and get “cast” where they can’t get the grip and space to stand back up on their own.
A lot easier for either to get back up on a slope too.
If I had to guess how it got on its back in the first place I'd imagine it was probably skateboarding related. I'd like to see anyone (human or turtle) miss the execution of a frontside 180 ollie and NOT land on their back
