Ms rewards program is what I've always used to gather points to spend for free service. Its just a few min a day and ive got 3 years of service already bought, which is the max they allow (36k points for each 3 mo) and ive still got over 200k points saved. Dunno how many points they will change that to tho.

Fun fact, pc game pass has a $1 14 day trial, if you cancel before the 14 days are up you can do it again, over, and over, and over…. Any time they add a new game just pay $1 and beat it, just remember to cancel after 13 days… some times they even give you the $1 back if you cancel in the first week, but not every time

I used it on PC right when it was out, think it was $5 a month. At the time it was great, then I played through everything interesting and cancelled it. Certainly prefer owning and paying a fair price for things, but for games you aren't sure of, trying it out without worrying was nice. That's why I love indie games that make demos available. Much easier to feel good about buying it then

I disagree. I probably burn through roughly 2-3 games a month on it, sometimes its just a way to test a game to see if I even like it, but other times, I go through an entire game in a week or two that would have normally cost me like $40+ and only last a dozen hours or so. I can tell you I have played games(and even enjoyed them sometimes) that I would have never even considered buying, much less played, due to gamepass.

Still a scam. Gamepass has been amazing for the consumer and Microsoft, the people doing the actual hardwork making the games are getting fucked over terribly. Hi-fi Rush was a massive success on Gamepass where everyone who had gamepass downloaded it and checked it out from the hype....that studio still shut down, AND Hi-Fi Rush was a mid-budget game. If a mid-budget game that becomes the most successful game on gamepass can't save their studio, there's a major problem Microsoft isnt telling us.

HiFi Rush was from Bethesda, who is owned by Microsoft. It was made by Tango Gameworks. The studio was shutdown BY Microsoft, as well as Arkane Austin and a couple others. Success or not, Microsoft probably had a large hand in their ownership, and thus its up to Microsoft to decide its fate. Its an industry wide problem, studios shutting down shortly after a games release by a parent company, despite game success.
Doesnt change how effective gamepass is for consumers.

Writings been on the wall for a while now between declining console sales, increased accessibility to PC gaming, and consoles becoming PC stand-ins. The Xbox Series S/X are essentially just normal PC hardware and the software is literally just a version of Windows 11. Microsoft has been focused on buying game studios because that's where all the money is these days.

People need to understand this does NOT save you money... if you play a game on gamepass for more than a few months you're going to pay more for it then its full retail price and you still wont own it, you lose it all once your subscription expires.

Your math seems to assume people only play one game, like they're signing up for Game Pass because there's one single game they want to play so they pay this monthly fee to play that one single game exclusively for several months. You are correct that such a use case would indeed not save money... but who the hell does that? In my experience that isn't how your average player uses the service. What if I play six games? What if I play ten games?

You also lose it if the license gets pulled. Squinex did this with the entire FF catalog on PS5. It was available for a while, then they pulled almost all of them, so if you wanna continue your game, you need to pay.

It's been a while since I was subscribed, but at the time it was basically the cost of 2 AAA games a year and they were putting enough AAA content on the service that it was worth it. Plus then I got to play all the $20 indies I wanted on top of games I would have probably bought anyway. They were likely losing money on Gamepass and the rate hike was always in the long term plans.

With the price hike and all, you're looking at, what, little over $30 a month? Xbox games are around $60 to $70, yeah? So, beaing generous on math here, that's six games per year that you could get, and own, outright. Versus the four per year at the previous price point. That doesn't even factor in indie games which just screws the math up royally, but just major releases. I'm a huge gamer, I don't even buy six major releases in a year, so the only money saving is if I would have bought more.

it did make me able to try forza horizon 5 with all my internet friends way back when gamepass was 1 dollar for like 3 months trial. I had to buy it again on steam later and start over, but all my friends' scores are still there since my steam and microsoft account are linked. So I get to still get beaten by a friend who died last year.

This is why when I upgraded my Xbox One to Xbox Series X I got the one with the disc(not Series S). Even offline I can still play MOST of my old games. It's bullshit but also Game Pass IS a subscription service, like a car lease. When the service ends you only keep the memories.

Counter counter point: I haven't owned an Xbox for about 8 years now because of how the models changes. I used to be able to buy a lot of indie games for cheap and own them forever at $1-4 per game. I would buy the AAA games I wanted to play and they were complete games with no internet needed. Today they have replaced cheap games with gamepass so that if you play the same cheap indie game for 2 months it still costs you $60. AAA games aren't bought anymore, you buy a download that can go away.

Counter³ point? You could frequently get game pass for like $3. I did it several times. Plus if you can commit to collecting points with Microsoft Rewards it wasn't tough to earn enough points for a free month here or there.
I prob got 100 hours of gaming from a dozen or two titles for like $15 all in over that time.

I used it to play Forza Horizon 4 and then 5 exclusively. I beat most of what FH5 had to offer but I sometimes get an itch to come back and drive around or unlock a couple new cars, but not enough to spend $80. Granted I’ve spent a lot more than the retail value of both games over time now. I’ll make sure to buy the next one outright.

FBC Firebreak, Eternal Strands, Avowed, Expedition 33, Doom Dark Ages, Revenge of the Savage Planet, AtomFall, Stalker 2, Flintlock, Atlas Fallen, Silksong, Rogue Trader and Wuchang.
There are just this years games I played from gamepass. Thats a total of over $600 I played, but only spent $200 to do so. Sounds like a right good deal to me.

I'm not sure if "most" people would. I would say, based on my upvotes, a fair number of people might play games simialr to me. They probably have some form of gaming ADHD where they get bored of their current game and dont finish. Its also evident if you look at "% of people who got this achievement" listings on steam and xbox. Sure, 80% of people might finish the first leg of the game, but only 10% ever get the last boss one. It might be more common than you think.

I've probably tried and played dozens of games a year with it. I'm not generally the type of gamer who religiously plays one game for months on end. I was able to try out all kinds of games I might not have ever even bothered with at all thru gamepass. Its more like a demo service, or its a long term rental service, usually, its just a cheap way to get titles I dont want to pay for but would play.

Ive done similar, without sailing the seas, with gamepass. I was iffy about Darktide after having so many issues with Vermintide 1+2, but I absolutely fell in love with it thru gamepass so I bought it, the special edition upgrade, the xbox edition upgrade, the new Arbites class, and probably $40 of aquilas.
