Ukraine has started an incursion into the Russian core territory of Kursk Oblast, with 11 Russian villages and towns having been claimed within the past 24 hours by regular Ukrainian Army troops. The Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter in the video belonged to Russian forces that were scrambled to stop the incursion, which seems to have come as a complete surprise to Russian forces in the area.
The Mi-28 is an 18 million USD attack helicopter, compareable to the Boeing AH-64 Apache in use by the USA. The drone that took out the rear rotor of this helicopter costs about 1,500 USD, including the 1 kg explosive payload.
Aircraft like the Mi-28 are usually either too far away from the frontlines to be a target for short range FPV drones or they fly too fast to be intercepted by them, as the drones usually fly with a payload that brings them to the technical maximum they can carry. With rapidly shifting frontlines during the incursion into Russian territory that started yesterday however, it seems that this particular Mi-28 crew misjudged the distance to the frontlines and came into range of a Ukrainian FPV drone crew that didn't hesitate to take their chance.
Russian milbloggers report that two military helicopters have been lost in combat within the past 24 hours in Kursk Oblast, the first one being a Kamov Ka-52 attack helicopter that was shot down by unknown methods yesterday.

War is a battle of economics, make no mistake. But the conventional thought used to be that whoever had the most money won the war. Ukraine has quickly proven otherwise.
Well trained and highly flexible soldiers. Cheaply made tools/weapons that are cleverly built. The US had better be learning some lessons here and rethinking their R&D system, because a billion dollar fighter jet (F35) makes no sense in the new modern war.

There is still a place for these full force weapons like F35. Ukraine was asking for fighter jets for 2.5 years and finally got them earlier this month. They are very effective at what they do. I am sure US military takes notes of all the lessons learned in this conflict. US and EU had also supplied billions of aid to Ukraine. So importance of the economy in this war is still the key factor. Ukraine wouldn't have survived without quick help from US and EU.

nice that they are moving on Russian Territory but what they really should be focusing on is taking back what the Russians have claimed and especially the Crimea. Will this offensive help to win back the path that Russia carved between their mainland and the Crimea?

Russia is entrenched there - hitting them elsewhere allows them to gain bargaining power, and forces Russia to redeploy troops. Ukraine has the interior line of transport, so if Russia redeploys, Ukraine can take advantage quickly.

I believe many of the original videos at the time were post-processed to hide potential risks that could be used against the troops, such as clues as to where they could be located, or military intel. This video could be such one of those cases.

Drones are the future of warfare. Would you rather have one easily shot down attack helicopter, or 12,000 suicide drones for the same money? The drones don't require as much maintenance. A single skilled operator can control multiple drones. The operator doesn't die when a drone gets shot down. Add AI and you don't even need the operator anymore. It's frankly rather horrifying.

We should pre-emptively ban AI from being able to control drones or any military equipment. There's at least 40 years worth of books, movies, and video games to show why putting military equipment in the hands of AI is a really bad idea. Humans need to retain absolute control of the killing machines.

Easily is a bit overstated, the heli was caught by surprise. It's still much faster than a simple drone and has a huge payload compared. Simple drones like that are more an attack of opportunity option, short range and cheap. An attack heli can do so much more. Nobody is giving up on heli's and jet aircraft just yet. Even if this heli was shot down relatively easily, it most likely did very serious damage before that in other operations. Russians are also learning fast how to jam drones.

Not to mention, as a reminder, we don't send them money. We send them products (weapons) that WE manufacture. As I understand it, typically our older stuff, that we then replace to build our stockpiles back up. Military aid to another country is a stimulus to our own economy. On one hand, f-ck the military-industrial complex. On another.... yay jobs?

It is such a mix feel for me. Like our military is overblown, but it also earns the US a lot of money by basically renting large parts of it out to other nations. Yet it still wastes excessive amounts of money on frivolous things and we could keep our massive military even with budget cuts but since they keep using up everything they get the gov policy is to give them more. Since our government seems to like using an archaic system of "reduce budget if they save, increase if they go over"

The problem with the whole Israel/Palistine issue is NOT just about what Israel is doing, but the fact that Israel has ties to MANY different politicians and is considered an 'ally' among the middle eastern nations. There's other reasons as well, that I can't really get into here, but my HOPE is, with a new administration, changes can happen and they can start influencing Israel in other ways.
But if Trump gets in, you can BET he'll go full on support for Israel.
