Having a pretty emotionally difficult time right now as my mental health is tanking from all this. Huge phobia of needles, blood, and specifically my neck being my scary spot I hold when panicking, so if you can imagine I’m losing it daily with the thoughts. humor helps sometimes.

Laugh damn you because post surgery you’ll need to be careful with the laugh, snort, and head movement. Been a nurse for decades and had my share of post thyroidectomy due to cancer patients. Oh, and take the perscription laxatives- the amount of calcium you will need will clog you up.

@OP You get an entire year to look at that scar, and figure out some makeup FX to run the thing all the way up the side of your head and make it truly epic! (On a more serious note) You can do this! You only have to be a little brave. As I have told my kids, bravery has nothing to do with being afraid, but what you do in the face of that fear. I believe in you!

I just got another fusion operation on my neck. My wound is looking very Halloween-appropriate, like someone grafted on a new head! Good luck with your surgery, I have Hashimoto’s so I sympathize with thyroid issues. Hope you are well soon!

Oh, and I have almost no pain, you can do this! Not as bad as you think at all. And my scar from my previous surgery had faded in a couple years to almost invisible. It will be OK, they will take good care of you! Sending good vibes to you.

Don’t let the prospect of a scar stress you out too much. I have had my thyroid out AND another surgery through the same incision point and within a year of each procedure the scars faded. It’s invisible now. So there’s a chance you’ll be like me and have no scar. Best wishes on your procedure.

Thank you so much I love hearing a good success story and so glad you’re doing better!! <3 it’s truly not the vanity of having a scar because I’ve got some in other places that don’t bug me, it’s the location of it and my deep fear of neck wounds my mind goes to dark places and I can’t sleep already. Hoping it fades like yours so I don’t live with that fear every time I look in the mirror!

I understand totally. Best I can offer is “don’t pick at the surgical glue” after and take the full course of post surgical antibiotics. The less stress on the incision while it’s healing, the better chance for a minimal scar. I’m rooting for you!

Look, @OP. You have to do this. You know you do. So stop worrying. Worry is payment in advance on a debt that never comes due. Place your safety in the hands of the professionals who know how to deal with this, thank them whenever and however you are able, breathe deep while you're still on the planet, and maintain. Time will pass, and so will this episode.
But don't worry. Tie up loose ends. Go about the business of living, because you still have a lot of work to do before you go.

I had thyroid cancer some 23 years ago. Although my surgery scar looked a bit rough right after, it has been for some years now barely noticeable. You can survive this. And, by pushing past your fears, you will become stronger. Best wishes.
