I am 51yrs old. I have been loyal to companies in the past. my current loyalty goes as far as getting my pension, that has been frozen. so I am getting a greatly reduced amount. Yeah I know many don't even have that luxury, but I hired in with the promise that I would have one, and now it is much much less.

classic argument-- "we need to cut costs. so you're out. as of today." vs "oh no! you can't go. we need two weeks notice!"
(severance pay was supposed to cover for the sudden loss of income but companies almost never give severance either..)

Your company had no idea who the fuck you were before you applied and won't give a fuck about you after you're gone - they'll just look for the next warm body to fill the hole or eliminate your position entirely in the name of cost cutting. Show them loyalty equal to that they show you.

You can be loyal to the small company that doesn't have more than one building elsewhere. Once it grew big enough to have another building, stop.

The only reason I stay where I work is my schedule, also my pension. If I stay where I am I can retire with full benefits when I am 55. The light at the end may be far away but at least there is an end.

H Ross Perot hired a ex-special forces commando team to invade Iran and get his employees out... worked for them in the late 1990s, there is no way they would have lifted a finger to save any employee... they would have stopped payroll the second they were captured.

Yep. My Dad worked for a division of a major defense contractor at upper levels. He retired at the end of the 80's. He went in to meet with some people there in the late 90's. His assistant was still working there. She said "Be glad you're not here anymore; it's not the same company". Ten years and it all had changed.

I know it's true, but the expression is weird. Am I wanting my company to never replace me? Put up my photo and have the other employees touch it every day and sob? Other people have to make a living, the company needs to be functional.

I work in tech, so, the job will be posted in a week, but what feels like 5 rounds of interviews later...
Honestly, consultant/contractor would fill the job in the interim.

you lie. those fuckers are incompetent. they restructured around me, needed me to stay on, I got a promotion to a new team... so now 3 people are doing my role at a higher expense to the company because they fucked up.

Yeah, when my mom finally quit her job at Lowes after getting fed up asking for more helpers because she was the ONLY one doing pricing, they instantly split her job into like four workers. Made her so angry.

Can relate, worked at Home Depot for years, got a tittle change but just had more work on top of what I was already doing, no pay increase, expecting old title work would get replacements (at least one person).I quit, 5 new people had to replace me when I was gone.

I think the point they're trying to emphasize here is that there was no mourning period for the lost boss. The company carried on like business as usual despite the tragedy.
