Fun fact about these: when they stick they make a nice bow to catapult food from the edge of the plate. Nice AOE damage when the right solidity ofte food is present.
This vacant blinking look. At my home, we had many childrens books in two parts. Because three toddlers consecutively found out how much fun it is to rip books apart at the spine and that you could be done with it before the parents could intervene.
I *was* the third toddler raised there. Though i have no memory of ever doing that. I am also not sure if i even did it or only one of my brothers.
Only 2 of us turned out psychopaths, though. It's the other two. I assure you, i am perfectly normal. You can completely trust me. Like, with your daily routines, blind spots in your driveway or every exhaustive detail about your diet. By the way, have you ever tried to climb into a freezer? It's fun! I'd like to hear how it fit.
A while back I read a research article that indicates it is better to use regular plastic plates. Any design that limits the spilling will only postpone the motor activity development of the child. They have to learn sooner or later. Also, it looks like this one is difficult to clean.
This! Our kids even use normal plates from ~1.5 yr old. Anything else will just teach them that turning, throwing, banging things is okay. So far we shattered exactly 1 plate, and I think it wasn't even the kid's fault. Maybe it was me, I'm BY FAR chief shatterer in our house :/
I never quite understood these types of products especially when tailored for toddlers. Like surely you (the buyer) have to realize that your child isn't an adult pretending to be a child. Children don't adhere to restraint the way adults do, they are literally evolved to mess around until they find out.
Goofy products aside, I feel like letting your kid learn how to use a freaking plate is kind of a necessary thing to do? Like, essential "how to human" skills?
Exactly. And as long as they're super super small, putting small chunks of food directly on the table in front of them worked just fine for us. They won't be spooning soups or sauces at this age anyways, you don't really need a plate for finger food.
As designers we always have to pin point the source of the problem first before we can create logical design proposals, and in this case clearly the problem isn't the bowl.
Many years ago... military establishment home to a "technical apprentice" school of 16-ish to 20-ish year old 'lively lads". A local company developed a new plastic that when formed into chairs made them 'unbreakable'. This company requested the Military test these chairs in said "technical apprentice" canteen (mess hall). Within a month... 'nuff said.
Not having kids, I figured stuff like this was to prevent accidents because toddlers are clumsy and ignorant. It never occurred to me that failure could be the goal. Agent of chaos.
For what it's worth it's hard and tiring but also the most fun I've had in my life. She brings an unrestrained joy to things that adults never do and it's helped me rediscover a lot of laughter.
Also I make fart noises and sing silly songs and I'm her hero.
I just spend my morning pushing my daughter around in her car while pretending to be Steve Irwin taking tourists on safari. We encounter a lion (the dog) and try to sneak past quietly. This never works, due to several shenanigans, and we end up speeding away while the lion chases us. Probably did this 15 times this morning and I’m exhausted, but I love every minute I get with her.
It is wild how we want all the sex and none of the purpose. I mean yea, I get it cuz human. But wanting cake and eating... If not for eating what's the point of cake? I don't get it. Warm apple pie. Sex with cakes.
I don't know, maybe try asking the dolphins, bonobos, bats, penguins, or any of the other various types of animals that frequently have sex strictly for pleasure why they're wasting their time enjoying themselves instead of trying to produce offspring.
In the sense that our offspring are guaranteed to experience greater suffering than us through both humans and 'natural' circumstances. We will not be fixing the issues we're experiencing now in under 30 years as unregulated capitalism grinds them to bits and even if we do they'll have the collapse of the biosphere to look forward to.
And for what? Because 'babies are cute'? To 'continue the family'? To 'have someone to take care of me'? All while orphanages sit at capacity.
This is what baffles me about most physical product QA processes. Did you even bother to try your target audience? Did you ask someone who uses it daily how it could be improved?
I don't even have kids and I saw this shit coming. Has this person never actually met a kid or seen one in action? The "throw things onto the floor" game is legendary.
I did that a lot as a kid I was told. Once my grandfather caught the thing I dropped, so I started crying and he had to call my mother because he didn't know how to make me stop. The solution was apparently to drop the thing he caught himself, and I stopped because baby me found it funny.
I'd like to think that I'd just let them cry. "Oh, what, you didn't get exactly the result you wanted? Tough luck." I'd like to, but I don't know how long I'd really last.

That is exactly how I thought that would go.

The collapse of society and civilization in our lifetime wasn't enough?
Unpopular opinion: having a child at this point in time is incredibly selfish.
RoodKontjeAapje
How so? Children of today are the ones who carry society in the future. In that regard, not having them would be selfish.
MisterLemons

Never test items without involving the actual target group of people.

The target group was “People with tremors and stuf”

that appears to be what the second half of this is, a field test
SupermassiveZebra
Nah the goal was to sell you a cheap plastic thing, 'useful' and 'working' were not requirements

The actual goal was to cause a trade imbalance.

This was very carefully engineered to just be a cheap plastic thing

This is what baffles me about most physical product QA processes. Did you even bother to try your target audience? Did you ask someone who uses it daily how it could be improved?

Target was (old) people with tremors and stuff

And then brand manager comes in and says "nah" because improvements according to user feedback don't have a place in projected budget.

I have the impression that these days rapid production simply doesn't care. Make 100.000 sell it to someone, move on.
