I'm still not sure what was wrong with it but new spark plugs seemed to do the trick. I went through everything on the car and everything was in spec. I only changed the plugs because they were on sale at the store when I went to buy a compression tester and a timing light.

Congrats. Now just never turn it off again.

Gas, spark, battery, electric, & air. This is what you need to start a car. If it isn't one of these things, you got a big problem
FlickTigger
It seems that I had 4 bad spark plugs at the same time. Changing the spark plugs seemed to fix it.

Congrats on fixing it. What were the symptoms?
FlickTigger
Ran out of gas, put new gas in it, engine spins but won't start. I had fuel to the carb, spark, and compression.
sevish885
Did you clear out the carb?
FlickTigger
I drained the float bowl, a full carb rebuild was going to be my next step but it's running now.
sevish885
Hmm, could have been some junk in there, hope it keeps running.
FlickTigger
Me too. this car is about 83 times less rusted as my current car but reliability might be a problem.
junkhacker
fuel filter, maybe bad pump
FlickTigger
replaced the filter and installed an electric in place of the mechanical. it didn't change anything.

weak spark? how fouled were the old plugs?
FlickTigger
Moderately carbon fouled
