There's a (GM-less) TTRPG called "i'm sorry did you say street magic" that does exactly this: https://seaexcursion.itch.io/street-magic
NotThisGuyAgain
Ran a tabletop campaign that was pretty much this. It was tons of fun. Gonna have to do it again some day.
KingXizor

I try to tell people that learning to write computer program is being able to cast magical spells, but most people don't want to learn
TeishaTaisha
I've always loved stories when casual magic is a normal thing.
Ficious
Kraken by China Mieville
TanithRosenbaum
So, shadowrun without the corporate sprawl... jup, I'm in.
MagmaCarta
Street vendors selling knock off fake luxury brand charms and spells from Hagworts.

I am but an old man; can someone explain to my withered self what a "wixen" is? Google tells me it is a music publisher.
Blacktusk
Witch/Witches - Girl, Wizard/Wizards -Boy, Wix/Wixen -Neutral. (Apparently, I don't subscribe to this word I just googled harder)
mattrixk
That's just silly. Wizard and Witch are brands/types/fields of magic, not genders. Girls can be Wizards and guys can be Witches.
Newfangledtomfoolery
Bit of Charles de Lint might scratch that itch.
PastryRaven
Shadowrun?
Hexeron
That's what I was about to write.

Basically, but this is all a bit less dystopian. It's like if the world didn't go to total shit with the Awakening and Matrix stuff going on
Someshithead241
Urban Fantasy is the genre that this is called.

I agree. But this was still lovely.

Try the SERRAted Edge books, or the Bedlam's Bard books.
StannisDaMannis
LupusLilium
College kids getting in way over their heads trying to contact the dead, end up opening a doorway for an angry Mothra to try to slaughter
everyone. End up going on to take over, get deposed, destroy, and rebuild a kingdom on another world.
florpglorp
My building plumber and super keep telling me its illegal to have a flowerbox in a non fire escape window. They can keep the threats coming
#5 re chalk art: the Man Who Drew Cats by Michael Marshall Smith.
glitterdemon
Try “A Madness of Angels” by Kate Griffin. Four book series, plus a two book side series.
Txernobog
Sure Jim Butcher approves this
#2 I read the alchemist one and immediately thought of three-eye. Then the music ones reminded me of Molly's One Woman Rave.

I once heard of magic graffiti that warms and shelters the surrounding area for the homeless, and alerts people of nearby cops

Those are "hobo code" sigils, & anyone messing with them risks the wrath of Hermes.

In SM, "OG" now stands for "Old Gods" from the days of Antiquity; they're a bit past it, but wiser and kinder. Just don't wake the Ancients.
ArchMagos
Was Hermes the patron God of the homeless too? I thought his domain was thieves.
Patron god of travellers. Also, bringing "thieves" into a conversation about travellers & the houseless seems to say a lot about you.
JustDumbCommentsAndCorrections
You are both correct. Hermes was patron god of heralds, travellers, thieves, merchants, orators, athletes, and probably more
Yeah, I knew he was messengers and thieves, but I didn't remember the rest and I knew he wasn't talking about messengers.
