Instead of blowing all our money on microtransactions, let's give some attention to Indie games that have dared to stand out from the crowd.

ECHO - This is the most original third-person stealth/action shooter I've seen in a long time. It takes place in a massive, intricately detailed, fractal-inspired palace that goes through regular cycles of light and darkness due to constant power outages. But here's what makes it interesting: All of your enemies are robotic clones of yourself. Anything they see you do, they'll learn to mimic. Pick up a weapon to fight with, and they'll learn to use that weapon. Shoot at them, and they'll learn to shoot back. Sprint, climb, or hide, and they'll learn those actions. But only when you're in the light. When the power goes out, all bets are off. It's a game that forces you to constantly change your playstyle, as your clones are always adapting to your strategy. You'll find yourself thinking twice before using a powerful attack when you don't need to, because you'll be teaching it to your enemies too.

ICEY - A narrative-driven hack-and-slash that isn't afraid to break the 4th wall. You're an android girl who's being told what to do by a mysterious narrator, but you don't have to follow his advice. You don't even have to get out of your tube. Not everything is what it seems. There are some plot twists that you'll see coming, but some that you won't. If you're interested in Castlevania meets The Stanley Parable, this game might be worth a look.

DeadCore - Have you ever played those custom jump maps in Halo, Quake and Unreal Tournament? Yeah, DeadCore is like that. It's not the only first-person platformer out there, but it's unique in that it specifically tries to capture the feel of trickjumping/speedrunning in old-school shooters. You have a gun, but it's more of a tool than a weapon; Your timer is even built into your ammo counter, which says a lot about this game. Enemies will recover from being shot almost instantly, forcing you to develop twitch reflexes and precision aim as you rush through levels as fast as possible to make it past each threat. It's been described as "Portal without the Portal gun".

Quadrilateral Cowboy - This is a game about hacking where you actually need to hack. As in, you need to manually type commands into a DOS prompt, not just press a button that says "Hack". It's a stealth puzzle game where you'll need to be clever about problem solving and automating tasks if you want to infiltrate each location without setting off any alarms. Armed with only a laptop and a wifi antenna, you'll travel the world and do everything from downloading people's brains, to hijacking an airship, to robbing a moving train, to compromising a space elevator. Hack the planet.

Spintires: Mudrunner - Probably the most detailed offroad trucking simulator out there. Your wheels will dig into the mud, leave trenches, and possibly get stuck. Your tires will deform from the weight being forced on them. You can bend and snap trees by ramming into them. Old bridges will buckle and warp as you drive over them. Rocks will come loose and crumble as you crush them under your wheels. If you're carrying a cargo, it will fully react with physics just like it would in real life. You can attach a winch to nearby anchor points to pull yourself out of deep mud. The game also has Steam Workshop support, so you can drive pretty much any truck, SUV, pickup, buggy, or other off-road vehicle that you want.

EDIT: People have been saying that you should get Spintires: Mudrunner (spelled with a lowercase t), and not the original, because the developer got screwed out of control of the original. Just a PSA.

Frozen Synapse - A cyberpunk turn-based strategy game where you command a squad of genetically-engineered transhuman soldiers, but with a twist: Both you and your opponent's turn play out at the same time. With no way to predict what your opponent is going to do next, your only option is to position your soldiers at the best angles so they can cover any possible countermove. There's more: The layout of each level is randomly generated every time you retry, so the floorplan and angles will be completely different on your next attempt. No strategy will work twice. Add some destructible cover, a well-designed system of unit commands, and a good story with morally grey objectives and some unexpected twists. Believe it or not, this game actually plays out a lot like a full strategy version of the classic Rainbow Six games. I learned some things playing this game that I still use when I play first-person shooters.

Antichamber - This game will fuck with your head. It's a Portal-style first-person puzzle game that uses non-euclidian geometry. This basically means the world doesn't make any damn logical sense. You'll see impossible geometries everywhere. Pay attention to the above gif, and think about the shape of that hallway for a second. Exactly. It's a nonlinear game that will constantly subvert your expectations of how three-dimensional space works, and even failure might still move you in unexpected directions...

The Fall - A bleak, story-based adventure game with a unique premise: You are an intelligent suit of power armor, the human soldier inside you has been knocked unconscious, and you need to get him to safety so he can receive medical attention. As an AI, your survival is unimportant, but his survival is. This game's story gives a unique perspective on the emergent behavior of an AI, and the way automated systems based on a strict set of rules can eventually have no choice but to do things their human designers never intended, once left unsupervised. How much danger should you be willing to put someone in, in order to protect them?

CrossCode - This one was a suggestion from a friend, so I only have second-hand information on it. But apparently it's a top-down RPG that has a super fluid combat system, a huge open world, and lots of quests and side activities. It has a fairly in-depth talent tree, puzzles that are physics based and very well built, bosses that play like puzzles, and some excellent pixel animation. It's very similar to the classic Legend of Zelda games, if you enjoyed those.

Subnautica - A survival game that distances itself from the others by immersing itself in a deep-sea setting. You dive into the depths of an alien ocean to collect resources so that you can build and expand your underwater base, and then upgrade your submersible so that you can explore deeper into the darkness. But don't stray too far from home, because there's some scary shit in the ocean...

High Hell - A fast-paced cartoonpunk-style shooter where you run through the upper levels of skyscrapers, kick down doors, and blast demons in the face, before jumping off the edge of the building and parachuting to safety. I love games that stand out visually, but the cool thing about this game is the light feel of the mechanics and the dynamic layout of the levels, often allowing you to tackle a fight in more than one way. According to people in the comments, it's like Hotline Miami but first-person.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale - What would it be like to run one of the item shops in an adventuring world? Why not find out? An interesting game because it casts a deconstructing look into the tropes common in RPGs; Recette herself is deeply in debt because her father abandoned her to go adventuring and never returned, forcing her to convert the family home into a general store to try and pay off the bills. You spend each week stocking shelves with whatever items you think passing adventurers are most likely to want, in an endless struggle to keep up with the loan payments. Also the characters are adorable which is probably the reason this one caught your eye in the first place.

Intrusion 2 - This game is just plain badass. It's a sidescrolling shooter with some amazing animation and heavy usage of physics, set to an intense metal soundtrack. The boss fights in this game actually remind me of the old Madness series, because of how intense they are and how well they're animated. If you like Metal Slug or Thing Thing, you should check this out. AND YOU CAN RIDE WOLVES WHICH IS AMAZING.

Night In The Woods - Mae Borowski is a socially-awkward small town girl returning home after dropping out of college. Mae Borowski is a cat. Mae's blundering attempts to reconnect with her friends and adapt to the challenges of adulthood are interrupted by overwhelming existential horror as her quiet hometown is consumed by more than one kind of darkness. One of the most relatable stories I've seen in a game, period. It tackles personal topics like depression, sexuality, and mental illness, as well as broader subjects like economic inequality, social issues, and Lovecraftian horror. The unique and grimly nihilistic coming-of-age story painted by Night In The Woods feels quaint and nostalgic while also filling you with a constant overhanging feeling of imminent doom. Hopefully this entry also counts as cat tax.

@op you might want to mention people should get Mud Runners and not the original SpinTires

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can do.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I second Subnautica. Also Recettear, even though it's outside my preferred genre.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Loved NITW. So so good.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Night in the Woods was my personal 2017 GOTY. Although... (Spoilers in reply)

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Isn't mentioning the "Lovecraftian horror" aspect a spoiler? It isn't revealed until the very end. Sure there's bits of foreshadowing, but..

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

It's left very ambiguous up until then. Could be regular murderers, could be ghosts, could all be in Mae's head. Only the final act has that

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

1/3)All of the marketing leading up to the game's release heavily implied a supernatural/Lovecraftian aspect, and even the Steam description

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

2/3)hints at it. I didn't really consider it a spoiler to mention a part of the story that the developers have openly talked about, in fact

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

3/3)I had the impression that in the final game, the supernatural played less of a role than what was implied in marketing.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

NIGHT IN DA WOOOOOOOOOODS!!

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

If you haven't played subnautica on VR, stop what you're doing, go buy a Vive or OR rig, and prepare to be amazed.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Definitely on my bucket list. Seems like it'd do the claustrophobic feel phenomenally well (in a good way).

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It really does. I actually played several games on my OR and it was this game that made me a believer.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Btw, Recettear might look cute and childish but that game is gonna kick you in the balls, especially if u arent prepared.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Recettear was the first game I played after switching from console to PC. Maybe I'm biased, but it's one of the best games I've ever played.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

CAPITALISM-HO!

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

He doesn't mean feels, by the way, he means mechanics. The story is good, but capitalism will FUCK YOU UP.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

You'll just be sitting there during the selling periods thinking "...BUY MY SHIT DAMNIT! I'M NOT GOING TO LOWER THE PRICE YOU BUMS!"

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Absolutely, I still haven't beaten it.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I still can't believe how great that game was - it's really deceiving how much fun there is to be had in capitalism

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've got over 1500 hours in Kerbal Space Program. It's also a good indie game. You should check it out.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

setting aside a few high profile AAA shitburgers 2017 was a great year in games we got some awesome shit

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Vision zero dawn was Really good

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You need to be the blurb writer for games and books.

8 years ago | Likes 307 Dislikes 1

Real question though isn’t “narrative-driven hack-and-slash” an oxymoron?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Haha, I might look into that since I'm between jobs at the moment.

8 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 0

I have to compliment you on your descriptions. They're descriptive and enticing. You're well versed in games and know why these are unique.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seriously, I was going to message you saying that I LOVE your descriptions. A+ writing buddy, and A+ for the post in general.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Your writing gives me the complete opposite reaction to what netflix' description writers give me, I actually want to play some of these now

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I'd like to say the gifs are way too short, imo, though. I'm going to look up the hack & slash one cause I didn't really see gameplay.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the recommendations though. :D

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

1/2)I've been making them all 5 seconds long for consistency, but if enough people want me to, I could switch over to 10 seconds. I've been

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2/2)keeping them short so that people on slow connections could still see them, though. 14 gifs at once is a lot for some people.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Let's not forget OneShot

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh my god, that needs to be the cat tax for a future post. Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A friend of mine just finished Night in the Woods. He liked it a lot.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I liked it too, it was a really great story with well-written characters.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A friend of mine who grew up in the ass-end of nowhere in smalltown america tells me it's incredibly accurate in the setting.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm still working my way through it, but I absolutely love everyone. No one's perfect, but all flawed in very human and realistic ways.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think Bea's my favorite of Mae's friends though. Really harsh at times, but seems like a good get-your-shit-together sort of friend.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(Mind you, I still love gregg and angus too, goddamn they're adorable)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It should be noted that spintires has been abandoned because the publisher screwed over the developer. Buy spintires:mudrunner instead.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How the hell did you fail to mention Hollow knight? One of the better games in recent memory imo.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That game is worth it for the soundtrack alone.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been getting so many suggestions for that, I guess I'll have to look into it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's practically free for the content you get, I highly recommend it if you like metrovania games.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is somewhere between dark souls and metroidvania. And it is beautiful.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are all of these PC games?

8 years ago | Likes 166 Dislikes 1

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Frozen synapse is both pc and mobile

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I played The Fall on xbone. Short game but fun.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I dont like PC for gaming, because of the steam and cheaters..

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

oh oh oh, try to play bf1 without cheaters on PC.. lol, you can't. wall hack, radar hack, it is all about PC gaming

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some of them are on consoles too, but I know for sure that all of them are on PC, yes.

8 years ago | Likes 160 Dislikes 2

Wtb one of these for android? I hate windows, can't be bothered with Linux or Mac OS. I have a high end android tablet and a controller.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'm already planning at least one free-to-play list, I could do an Android list too.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

wait are all these games out now? finished?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not all are finished. Subnautica's full version is later this month, for example.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

However, I know Frozen Synapse, Antichamber, and Recettear are are all complete games.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most of them are, but not Subnautica. It's nearly finished, though.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Actually, it turns out CrossCode is in Early Access too, I wasn't aware of this before.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some of us are casual gamer scum that don't do pc games, but great list all the same.

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 4

some of use love console controllers and don't want to bother with, honestly, shitty 3rd party software on pc to use said controllers.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah, thats what I was thinking. I know a lot of the stuff that is beta is on PC because it's hard to release a 'beta' for xbox/PS.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

at least you're acknowleding the err in your ways. :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Some of these could run on lower end stuff. Don't need to go bankrupt to play pixel art games and such.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I wish I could have a pc for gaming! Looks so much fun.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everybody says it's cheap then their dicks get hard for some $10k video card or something.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most of these games should run on low end computers. Subnautica, DeadCore, SpinTires, Echo, and Icey prob not, 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

High Hell & Antichamber Maybe, The rest should run on lower end computers. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GREGG RULS OK

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The Talos Principle / The Turing Test / Get Even / The Witness

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Get Even was in the original post, most of those others are being considered for future posts.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

haven't played get even but all the others here, yes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Antichamber is great. If you like intelligent puzzle games then also check out The Talos Principal, The Swapper, and The Witness.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Intelligent puzzle games? Yes, please! I've been enjoying She Remembered Caterpillars, a simple colour-based spatial logic game.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do these other games have a plot too? The Witness drove me nuts because there didnt seem to be one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Swapper and Talos Principal have excellent stories. Dig a little deeper in The Witness. There is a story there.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Every one of these lists misses Factorio

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Or it's less popular 3D counterpart, Infinifactory.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Factorio has been possibly *the* best pre-release game experience ever. And has an incredible eng-blog. Highly recommended.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a college previous college dropout myself, Night in the woods hit me so fucking hard. A personification of being a twentysomething.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Relevant username and a great game

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was like watching a lady cat version of my younger self. Loved the crap out of it.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it alternates between genuinely funny and really fucking real at the drop of a dime. Also Demontower is the shit, fuck the blood moat

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I watched Jacksepticeye play it, and I honestly loved the game and the story. It's also possible I got a slight crush on Mae. Don't judge me

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Caves of Qud is a damn good roguelike. Open world rpg with permadeath.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

See also: dwarf fortress in adventure mode , adom , ivan , etc

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See also: Tales of Maj'Eyal

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See also: Rogue Legacy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have played, can confirm. Will probably be on a future list.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Subnautica and Intrusion look awesome. Time to become poorer.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The boss fights in Intrusion are delicious.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Prepare to spend a lot of time in Subnautica. It's one of those rare games where the massive time sink feels worth it, too.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd wait just a little bit before buying Subnautica. It's been in early access for a few years and the full release is coming on the 23rd.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hmm... Interesting point. The price might go up on Xbox at full release. Decisions, decisions. Thanks for the tip either way though!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Subnautica price *will* go up. Game's started now will work with the final release.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well then, to the Xbox! Thanks for all the feedback on this peeps.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That said, it's definitely worth it. I've been waiting for the full release for a while to get the full experience.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Capitalism ho!

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: in Japanese, an "indie" game is a "doujin" game.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think it's hilarious how this sentence has a very different meaning depending on how you pronounce it. "Capitalism ho!" "Capitalism, ho!"

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Can confirm antichamber is worth it.

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

It's a ton of fun.... But I am so stuck right now and it's so frustrating. Haha

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeh i played it years ago but i ended up getting so stuck later in that i quit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

first game to make me think I am cheating while doing what the game wants :D

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SPINTIRES MUDRUNNER is the one you have to buy. Not the original. Creator got cut out of the dev process on the original Kept control on 2nd

8 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 0

Agreed! Weeks after release they even put in a normal camera. Workshop mod base keeps growing too. Best mud simulation ever!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

this woulda been nice a month ago before the christmas sales

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

The Humble Bundle site's store is having a similar sale right now, should have most, if not all, of these.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

My hero

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Upvoting so more people see this.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

ECHO was nice. I found beating things to death with crystal balls super effective.

8 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

Should I get it?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'd say yeah, if your computer can run it. If you end up not liking it, you could always get a refund.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don’t have a PC, I have a PS4

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Do they copy stupid behavior or just the stuff that affects them? if i run in circles staring at my feet, will they do that?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No, they only copy certain things like eating food, opening doors, crouching, sprinting or using weapons.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pc only? PS4 by any chance?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's on PS4, I'd like to pick it up as well, when it goes sale.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also if you collect a collectible and wait around, they'll start collecting others for you. Only for a single day-night cycle, but still.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's awesome. So they collect them to keep them for themselves but you could also loot the fallen?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You get them directly.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It does get a bit repetitive once you get the hang of it. But it was fun and something unique.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i agree. but it's short enough though that it doesn't overstay its welcome too much, i'd say one less level and it would've been better.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Any shorter and people would start complaining it's too short. So I understand that it's as long as it had to be.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah, i just thought some of the levels dragged on a little.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read somewhere that some ex IO Interactive Hitman devs had a hand in making it. Looks cool!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is the game demanding for pc? I wonder if my potato storebought laptop can run it. Has an I5-5200u, Its an integrated graphics card.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Haven't played ECHO - what's stopping you from just peacefully avoiding all enemies until the lights go out so they never learn to attack?

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

I think they still have the ability to walk straight towards you and grab you, even if you don't do anything else.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

The lights go out for a very little time, and when it turns bright again, all the enemies revive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The game also won't make stealth easy. Possible, sure. It more or less forces some interaction at times to keep it interesting.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing there are obstacles that you need to attack to progress or something.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Obstacles to attack no, doors to open and waterways to cross yes. Giving them the ability to open a door can really fuck you up.

Oh my god, that's scary as hell. I love it.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well, SHIT. Didn't consider that. I'm beginning to think I might need to get this game.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

If you decide not to buy it, i did a lets play of it :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

it has a very interesting mechanic in the learn/unlearn scenario. basically, if you can do it, so can they. anything.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I loved it. Watch the trailers: if you like them you will like the game.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They can corner you and kill you. This is 4 hours long but jump ahead to get an idea of it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v1dV_R39lk

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

God it took 38 minutes for the game to finally start, wtf? Is this what happens when somebody decides to make Filler - The Game?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

I'm glad somebody enjoyed spending a sixth of the game holding W

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

To downvoters everywhere; how would you feel if you spent 40 minutes wondering the train station in Half Life 2 before you met Barney?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

CrossCode looks pretty sick! Going to check that out.

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 1

I actually learned about CrossCode from an imgur post, helped fund the kickstarter. It's a great game! Trapped in an MMO with good puzzles

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CrossCode is so fucking good. Still in Early Access, has about a year left to go, but what we have now is polished.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's incredibly fun! It will be complete soon, but already has lots of cool content! Wait a few months to experience it all at once!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

CrossCode is really surprised me. Story, gameplay and tight controls. It's really well done.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve been playing it. I think it’s unbelievably good.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

THE MUSIC. Omfg, it's so well done.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looks awesome. However I simply refuse to invest in anymore “early development” games.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, if it were early development it wouldn't look like it does. It's early access, and that's a bit different, right?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Early access is full of empty promises or slow completion.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, all I can say in response, is that over the past 2 years, I've seen the game continue to develop and expand.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get where you’re coming from man I really do. But I think they’re almost done with it. At least give it a shot when it’s finished.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh definitely. It looks legit for sure. I’m going to support them 100% if it’s what I think it is.

Subnautica is awesome but fuckin scary early game. Late game is scary for an entirely seperate reason.

So you're telling me you refunded a game because it was the horror game it said it was? Because that makes SO much sense.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Subnautica AKA "The Ocean is every bit as terrifying as you thought it was."

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

My 7 yr old asked for it for Xmas. He loves spooky stuff and has been playing it every chance we give him.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Subnautica is the tits!!!!!! Base building is super fun and between the chill parts there are plenty of "pucker your butthole" moments.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I had a friend with a fear of deep water play it in VR. Needless to say, he never left the shallows.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

i'm proud of him for putting on the headset

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

+1 for subnautica, such a brilliant game. Don't watch any videos just play. It's one of those few game experiences of awe and mystery.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I wish I knew even one thing that you are talking about.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Beautifully realized world. Super immersive.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Every moment made me shit myself... until i got the prawn. Then everything became my bitch.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Are there like realistic animals or is it fictional scary?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not. My. Thing. Definitely. :) I hate dark water.... uargh

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Needs to be multiplayer tho

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

Subnauticas terrain is handmade, for everybody that didn't know yet. It's only barely procedurally generated.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Super-early game is actually relaxed. Corrals, colorful fishies, bright lights, even nights are nice. But oh boy it is 'fun' to go to Aurora

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Think that's scary? Try it in VR

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Seperete as in sepereted?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Upvoting for Subnautica. Currently have over 400 hours in that game. Even got my 6yo son to play it with me. Relaxation pure.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Also highly recommend it using a HTC Vive and a Xbox controller with your PC, that's some scary immersion there. Especially later game.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Love it. Like creeping around the ocean floor in your seamoth trying to avoid a leviathan above you. In virtual reality. (Blubablubablub)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Stranded Deep is a much better game IMHO

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Its a completely different game, not a better one. I have it since it was available and damn.. they take their time releasing patches..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea true

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a fear of deep water. I got this game and used my brand new headset I then asked steam for a refund 20 minutes later. Reason: FUCK NO

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

that fricken game is survival horror in disguise DX

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'd say late game is frustrating and irritating more then scary. Seriously, Stalker hunting you nonstop is pure bullshit

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I believe the best summary of Subnautica goes "FUCK THE OCEAN"

Soon. I think the 25th this month is the release of 1.0. Can't wait either, just sitting here wanting to play but I'll wait for release too.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

have a friend who HATES the ocean because he is afraid of whats in it. He looked a Subnautica trailer and went NOPE!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I had an ex who hated heights, so I showed her Mirror's Edge.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

you evil bastard

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll never play this game because I'm afraid of water games, will you tell me why it gets scary at the end?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Deeper water means larger fauna that are much more aggressive and terrifying

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's more scary the whole way through. The game has a story, but it's open world, and the open world is spoopy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Play it with a really good audio setup. Those fucking whale creatures scared me fucking stupid the first time I heard them

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm still salty about how subnautica was used to advertise a humble bundle but only a handful of keys were actually available.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So unless you were one of the first people to buy the bundle you didn't get subnautica. Still paid full price, of course.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

didn't even knew such bundles are a thing oO that does sound pretty shitty from humble

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funnily enough, the deep ocean scares me more than deep space. Most likely cuz we haven't found any space sharks yet...

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Yeah, there's something especially terrifying about the ocean.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

..With frikkin laserbeams attached to their heads!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

People cite Leviathans as the scariest things... but fuck mesmers. https://soundcloud.com/kamakazi/mezmer-trip

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I heard it for the first time and was oh ok I'll get closer the game knows what its doing

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, fucking crab squid. The noises they make man... *shivers*

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Subs about to go live this month and officially leave early access!! Followed from the 4th month, got my gf to love it too. So good!

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

I remember hearing about it while I still played natural selection 2. Jesus that was a while ago.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've purposely only gotten so far in it. (the first island base) I'll be playing on hardcore and will be well and truly terrified to explore

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

played like 3 hours, started going out into deeper waters and decided it deserved to wait for fun release.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably the right thing to do. I hope when the full release hits Xbox that I don't have to restart, I'm about 30 hours in :/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"30 SECONDS OF OXYGEN REMAINING" glances at depth meter "300" solemly opens his inventory to say farewell tohis bag of bladderflish

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

there is a pretty easy solution to this: play in hardcore mode

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That seems like the opposite of a solution.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the reason to have rapid ascension thingy, forgot the name

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Or the common sense to be aware of your surrounds lol. The swim bladder used to be really bad and consume 25ish oxygen, was it changed?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To collect seamoth pieces you have to dive quite long and deep, so it's totally can happen. And iirc bladder don't consume any O2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That thing definitely saved my life from a deep dive at least once early on.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

IT NEEDS COOP. Such a good game though!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Perhaps, but co-op generally kills most sense of fear in games. Which i feel is partially heavy in this game.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

'Needs' is a strong word. I can see the appeal but I don't think the game REQUIRES it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I do not care for your semantics. But you've never been drifting along and just felt super lonely?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In this game? No. Honestly every time people bring up "This game like NEEDS multiplayer" I look at it and think... Needs, no. I'm good.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the thing that makes the game work so well is the fact that you are the only survivor of the crash. I'm not against a multiplayer 1/

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

option but I don't see how it could fit with the story as it is. Maybe a prequel where you play the first exploration team? 2/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah, sequel. The Company hears about this planet full of resources from the survivor, and sends a survey team.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are literally two seats on each life-pod.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I found the automation it provided really poor. But then again, I play Factorio, so nothing can really compare. Shout out to Factorio. 5/7

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I, too, would give Factorio a perfect 5/7.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I think both Subnautica and Factorio are solid 5/7s

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is a bit of a terrible idea to even compare Subnautica to Factorio. They are both games. And the similarities are over on that

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Technically, they both contain an enemy called a Biter.

The desalination units? Yeah, I need more power to run enough though, building thermal reactors so I can stop worrying about water and salt.

https://i.redd.it/fu265tzaqg801.gif Sorry. mildly obscure reference.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See, ever since I got my thermoblade, I don't worry about food as much. Soon as I get hungry, I just start ginsu-ing the closest fish.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hydration is still a problem though, unless you use the stillsuit.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Next on my list is thermal reactors so I can power desalination plants! Dehydration is the real killer man.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good reason (stpry/mechanic) or bad reason (unfinished/abandoned/poorly done)?

8 years ago | Likes 189 Dislikes 2

Game has the final release next week so it's none of those bad reasons at all.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Early Access in Subnautica is done well, an exception where I'd normally not buy into it until a full release.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I avoid Early Access like the plague, but this is a rare exception to that rule. The devs stuck with it even after making tons of money

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who has played this for over a year. The updates they have done are incredible. Dev team is very talented. For someone who's 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

Fear is drowning, they've encapsulated that feeling perfectly. Great story. Great mechanics. Terrifying as fuck at every stage

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

As someone with some experience diving real world, this game really captures and plays on that fear of drowning quite well

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good reason. The Sea Dragon Leviathan is a scary fuck up close. My first encounter it snuck up on me somehow and nearly made me shit myself.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I’m intrigued

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

some of the creatures you encounter are bigger than your Sub, and thing is your subs torpedos only stun creatures at best.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Early game is terrifying because just about everything can kill you easily. late game story and atmosphere is terrifying.

8 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 0

You basically begin to regret ever going below shallow waters because of what you discover deep down below that explains parts of early game

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Also warpers, fuck those guys

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Swam out over an massive trench, thinking about going down into it. then a glowing eye opened and part of the ground moved. Back to base!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also it's got a official release date later this month.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Nice, I liked it a lot, but decided to wait for it to be done a while back.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they've changed a lot of things, at least when i played last.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

January 23rd

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yissssss. I last played a year ago, so I think I have some catching up to do

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You have no idea

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There have been so many updates since then.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good reason. The dark and deep water holds laby terrifying creatures just waiting for you to leave your submarine.

8 years ago | Likes 276 Dislikes 1

Yeah ARK kinda ruined oceans in games for me, nothing you can do will get me in those waters.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never thought how terrifying deep ocean waters were till I played that game, and man it just got worse the deeper I went, Love that game.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sometimes they don't wait for you to leave

8 years ago | Likes 159 Dislikes 0

That was an update that freaked me out. There I was, safe in my Cyclops... Before it started shaking and listing... Ugh.

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

You think your baddass and then all of a sudden the ocean goes and makes its bitch again.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

There's always a bigger fish

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 0

OM NOM NOM

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Wait, now even Cyclops isn't safe? Not ever prawn? Damn, here goes my hopes for 'safe' late-game..

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

You can get an energy shield but it drains batteries like wtf.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Nope, it isn't safe, it can even have fires and shit. You can get like torpedoes and stuff installed on it though so that's cool.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's SO quiet at the bottom of the ocean... until you here that scream

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

Oh you glorious bastard that's some good advertising. I've been interested in this for a while but now I have to get it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh for fuck's sake, now I have to get it.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

It's EXTREMELY atmospheric which is dope, I actually had to take breaks from the game because I normally hate the ocean but it's fun so ????
