This happened here at a BART (Bay Area Rapit Transit) station, in the San Francisco Bay Area. I really wish some passengers would have "spilled" their beverages on them. They recently upgraded these gates and aside from piggy-backers who sneak in behind paying riders, they seem to work pretty well, and the ones that are taking excessive damage are being reinforced. Meanwhile crime is down, and station maintenance costs have lowered.
Okay so, I was once working in Boston as active duty military and the Transit let's mil ride for free, but normally you have to walk up to a person, show your Mil I'd and they buzz you through.
A lot of the stations are unmanned including the one by the place I was working, I went to the customer service place to ask what I should do if the gate was unmanned.
The official stance was "jump it, or piggy back, we do not care." I ended up buying a monthly card.
