Careful with “gorillas.” It could be mistaken for a racial slur. And gorillas in the wild are actually rather nurturing and supporting of each other within their social groups.
Hey man i get my simians wrong all the time, and i certainly didnt mean any racial slur. Are u sure its the gorillas that are the kind ones? i don't know, I imagine lots of people don't replace their smoke alarm batteries or replace them. I was teaching a kid who started working with us over teams and he's of Indian decent, but yea also had the smoke alarm battery warning chirp. Quite distracting
I mean, kind of defeats the purpose of running the race if you instantly lose when you do that. Like how there are very few shooting deaths in biathlons lol
But like a lot of cheating there's a nonzero number of times you cheat and no one catches you, or your cheating, while disqualifying you, still affects the outcome (say the 2nd place hits the 1st place, which lets the 3rd place win)
Foam batons wouldn't seem to affect the outcome and reduce the benefit of cheating with them.
It would have to be weighted the same or people with fragile egos will start complaining and making it a requirement to put asterisks in the books when records are broken after that point diminishing future accomplishments.
i've seen way more elbows get thrown, we should start forcing all runners to wear soft elbowpads. i've seen a lot of skinned knees from falls too, we should probably just ban running at this point.
You can't argue out both sides of your mouth like that. When the penalty for whacking somebody over the head with a baton is a lifetime ban from the sport, it's going to happen a vanishingly small number of times. The very fact it made the news at all -- let alone on a national level -- belies this. So why are we trying to mitigate that risk?
Considering multiple models of foam relay batons are commercially available clearly someone sees a benefit to them to prevent overt cheating like this as well as just accidents.
You need something firm that won't flex. Granted it has been "a few" years since I ran track in school, but IIRC, the ones we used were fairly thin wall aluminum tubes. Not exactly a great weapon.
it's a very public sport meaning it offers little forgiveness in using it as a weapon. at some point, can't baby proof against cheaters when the vast majority never attempt.
We just watch something happen on video and maybe that makes us feel like it's something that happens all the time but this may not be a problem that actually needs addressing.
They do, but the argument could be made the advantages aren't worth it. Metal batons are easier to clean off and don't deteriorate over time. They are also hollow inside which makes them easier to handle.
it would change handoffs and drop disqualifications by changing the texture and consistency. having a more forgiving baton would ultimately mean teams are less skilled to get that perfect fast handled on a sleek metal baton.
I can see if with all the adrenaline she acted on an impulsive dark thought, created by the frustration of getting passed, that she then immediately regretted. That would be bad, but she could be forgiven if shown actual remorse and an attempt to atone and effort to prevent future impulsive actions. However if she's lying to say it was pure accident and pretend she's the real victim that is entirely unforgivable.
I don't think it was so much being passed. I think she was being (partially) honest in that she hooked the back of that runner, and it made her do exactly what you said. Intrusive thoughts are a hell of a thing, especially in someone who has no history of self-discipline.
Respectfully disagree. Both are bad. I’ve played competitive sports. And while filled with added adrenaline, it’s still a VERY separate mental line to cross, to physically strike another person. Twice.
There’s “roughhousing and playing a little too rough when you’re already in hand to hand or body to body combat” (which she wasn’t) and “actively planned to hit and assault someone twice.”
...You disagree with the comment stating that "physically attacking and admitting to it would be bad, but doing that and lying is worse" and you state that, instead, "both are bad"? Do...do you not see how that's agreeing?
coverups are always worse than the crime. It would be a non-story had she said "I fucked up. I let my competitive nature get the best of me. I'd like to apologize to my opponent and my team for letting them down."

Here's the issue with that as was pointed out to me by a black female friend of mine. A black woman has to be 10x more perfect than any white man to be considered on par with him. To change one's mind or opinion opens the door for racists to leverage that as being weak or indecisive or ignorant... it's never considered as being misinformed or misled. I agree with you that typically it's better to just say it like you posted but in this particular dynamic it doesn't work that way sadly.
Ya. It's part of the politician's life that some are excellent at it and some not so much. It's the weighing of admitting some mistake with how many supporters that change might alienate or allowing your opponent to use against you to sway opinion. The most important thing to any politician is having people believe you align with their values (whether you do or not is irrelevant). I guarantee some of the issues Harris didn't take a firm standpoint on were a result of influence from big donors.
I'm standin' in the kitchen, carving up a chicken for dinner, minding my own business, when in storms my husband, Wilbur, in a jealous rage. "You've been screwing the milkman," he said. Nah, the beating was Harding's weird and abusive husband's ideal. It's doubtful if she knew he was serious about the plot, and even if she was who would believe her if she tried to tell anyone? 90s late night comics also mocked the shit out of the "frivolous" hot coffee lawsuit against McDonald's. Years later I learned it was a little old lady who got 3rd degree burns from coffee that was demonstrated to be above safe serving temp on multiple occasions and McD's launched a smear campaign against her, plus they had quietly settled multiple other suits for the same reason before hers was national news.
Maybe not, but if she's ok with assaulting a fellow teammate at a public competition, where you know people have their phones out recording, then I'd say it's not too far fetched to assume she would use this same poor judgement disciplining or just raising her kids. To add context, this is referring to Musk blaming him doing the nazi salute twice on his autism, and then acting like people are insensitive for calling him a piece of shit. It's not making fun of autism, it's making fun of people who use autism as an excuse to be bad people. But I understand you trying to be vigilant, mere misunderstanding though.

Must be her autism, doing the bad thing not just once but twice in public. We just hate the mentally ill, that is the real issue here.

Nope. Lemme go ahead and stop you right there before you say more ignorant slog. Don’t bring autism into this for a poor attempt at humor.
