It seems like safety of children would be a priority wouldn't it?

Tragic AF

And Parkland proved that the cop isn't even responsible to save the kids.
FrolickingFrolicking
Disturbing https://mobile.twitter.com/finchymonger/status/1269657096083197953 Yet they want more and more power and immunity
criticaltheory
The same people crying about this will turn around and blame police when there is a school shooting.
FrolickingFrolicking
Even in critical-of-police circles, nobody blames police for school shootings. Except when they refused to investigate earlier reports
criticaltheory
Orly? https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2018/12/19/parkland-shooting-judge-school-cops-no-duty-protect-kids/2360683002/
criticaltheory
Do you realize that most of these cops are DESPERATELY needed in some of these schools?
ChaoticSquid
they're not desperately needed in schools in European countries. There is something causing the need which should be focused on instead.
criticaltheory
Ah, I see, so we should let school children be put at risk while we figure this all out? Good plan.
ChaoticSquid
I'm not saying redirect funds right away. There's clearly deep societal issues causing those problems than need to be fixed.
ShaunSchaf
hey, at least you don't have any shootings .. oh, wait.
criticaltheory
The same people crying about this will turn around and blame police when there is a shooting, and here you are creating that environment.
FrolickingFrolicking
Point taken, but it’s not a joke. A human in this thread is literally saying “the data makes sense, the cops are needed to stop killer kids”
TSwit
It's also 2015-16 data
faultysage
A) Collecting and curating huge data sets like this takes time. B) That was only 5 years ago, it's still relevant.
TSwit
Are you saying not much has happened in the last 4 years that could have affected specifically this data?
FrolickingFrolicking
Here you’re looking for a rationalization and an excuse, not you’re missing the point. It’s about the non-existent services.
faultysage
It may gave gotten worse.
TSwit
Yes, I genuinely want to know. School shootings have become much more frequent these last few years, right?
FrolickingFrolicking
“Much more frequent” and still a TINY fraction of all schools. And they happened at schools that had police. Read the data on what’s missing
faultysage
Go back and read the first part of my comment. You'd be lucky if this data is collected at the state level, it may be city by city.
OMGamIImguringCorrectly
Police don't put themselves in schools. If the cops are there, they've been hired by the school board and probably for a reason.
FrolickingFrolicking
my friend, the post and the study are clearly blaming FUNDING DECISIONS and political choices, not these hired cops themselves
FrolickingFrolicking
“Probably for a reason”, terrible vague blame-the-victim. Did you even read all the words? The social services are empty, but cops loaded
ChaoticSquid
no western European schools have a 'school cop' or even a guard from what I've seen. Seems like a complete waste of funding.
OMGamIImguringCorrectly
Then blame the school boards and defund them or start attending more PTA meetings and make real change.
ChaoticSquid
given that it's a tax expense then you could easily abolish it through local government.
ChaoticSquid
'easily' probably isn't the right word there my bad
criticaltheory
Ah, the wonders of being a tiny European nation.
ChaoticSquid
how does that affect wether or not you have a cop at a school?
criticaltheory
How do population levels effect crime rates? Hmmmmmmmmm.
dasklaus
They don't. Density does, to a degree, but that's about it.
ChaoticSquid
an average school in the US will have roughly the same number of kids as European school
ChaoticSquid
crime rates are generally done on crimes per 100'000 people so it has no bearing on total population
