That's no filter. Newspapers were B&W, and B&W film is easy to develop and print while colour film is not. Also cheaper. So, easy decision.

B&W film shot better in low light, WITHOUT USING A FLASH!!!

Low light photography needs higher ISO and higher ISO introduces noise which looks terrible in color but just a little grainier in b&w
