Short version: Obvious media presence in the courtroom, with cameras, can be disruptive, especially if anyone starts "putting on a show" for the cameras. The Lindbergh Baby case was an example of this, and the outcome of the trial may have been affected by the publicity created by the newsreel cameras in the courtroom. The O.J. Simpson trial, after judges started letting cameras in their courtroom again, turned into a 3-ring (media) circus.

Do courtroom sketch artists have a union keeping them in a job? It really seems like it should be a simple thing to change the law/rule to allow approved photos/video instead of this weird workaround they've come up with.
