In my experience hosting companies don't tend to let you backup anything if you haven't paid your bill, so I'd assume either sitting on a server somewhere or gone. Then again it's a company so they may have let them take a backup first... So maybe on some HD's sitting on his desk?

DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service, which involves overwhelming a server using so many individual packets of data (in this case, Twitter tweet view requests) that it cannot handle the influx and slows either to a crawl or a complete stop.

The requests are coming from legitimate users, but the actual denial of service "attack" is coming from the hosting servers in how they are handling processing those requests. I would consider the attack origin being locally and this would be a DoS caused by misconfiguration of the hosting site (or planned, in musk's case here). Either way, this is perfect execution of insider threat (the stupid kind, not the overtly malicious kind).

That's just one aspect (though I have no idea how this whole thing is profitable). SpaceX is still revolutionizing spaceflight, even with all the delays. To bring 2/3 of a launch vehicle home and use it again (and soon, hopefully even a whole rocket)? Space shuttle wasn't even close to doing that. And other companies, like RocketLab, are following their steps.

I think he was always like this. I remember a post about an ex-employee from Tesla or Space X. Musk had handlers because the other board members knew how he was. When he left for Twitter, he was free from the handlers and was able to say what he was always saying apparently. I don't have a link for the source though

He was always like this and we didn't see it. Back when he acquired Tesla and catapulted to the spotlight, he did a lot of work spinning the narrative that he was the driving force behind the car that was going to popularize independence from fossil fuels, rather than a venture capitalist who stole other peoples' work at the perfect moment and sabotaged it to make more short-term profits. Twitter is only unusual in that he picked the worst moment instead of the best.

Just please remember there were a lot of people who _did_ see it, pointed it out, and got shot down. A lot of people refused to listen until it affected them personally because they used Twitter.

Best moment would have been while it was still spreading like wildfire. Not now that it basically hit saturation on users with people becoming more and more disillusioned with it. He still would have fucked it up, but it would have been at least slightly less embarrassing and costly.

In my experience isolation allows you to research & believe whatever you want. He, like most ultra-wealthy, is isolated by their money & success. I've seen it happen with educated rural poor folks after a few years of isolation

If you do even a little research, you'll see that he's always been a dick. Even before his open fascism, he would cancel Tesla orders from people who dissed him on Twitter. Nobody becomes a billionaire without being a massive piece of shit.

I think that you will find that it's impossible to 'earn' the billionaire status without being ruthless and exploitative. The closest that you could do would be to inherit the title and then you either keep it all and thereby earn the 'asshole' status or you do something good with it and drain the coffers.

As an alternative to others here, I suspect he was being honest when he used to say he wanted to fight climate change and save humanity. I think it's his motivation that's the problem. He used to receive great accolades from "the left" for the work he did at Tesla and, to a lesser extent, space x and some, albeit less, from "the right."

I think the same thing. Solar City has not been mentioned here yet, nor his advocating Solar power on an industrial scale that could provide very cheap electricity in the mid and south us. That plus Tesla (didn’t found, but definitely prevented it from being another ev that Big Cars killed), space x and even Boring Company (fighting traffic congestion and potentially limiting need for short flights) are too much to be a coincidence for me.

You don't call rescue divers pedophiles and escape criticism just because you make electric cars. "The right," by contrast, is loyal to its celebrities. Nobody voting R is going to criticizes their boy just because he's an asshole.

Now that they held him to account for his words he began lashing out at them more and more. The more he attacked left leaning ideas and people the more right wingers embraced him, the more they embraced him the more he went along with whatever they said to earn more praise.

Importantly, given how unaware most people tend to be of why they think what they think he probably just as sincerely believes whatever nonsense he's spouting now as he did the things he used to say about climate change and the like. Remember, he tried to work with trump when he got elected and got kicked out/resigned because he wouldn't play ball with the R's. Now he bends over backwards to please them, even when democrats are in power.
