My wife and I experienced this, but on a Harley. Kill the engine, drop the kickstand, hope for the best. There were other vehicles around us, we weren’t interesting at all to them.
And no one got out to pet it? Weird. We were there 15 yrs ago and fools were getting out of their cars to get close ups and shit. Had to be city people. Country people wouldn’t (usually) be that dumb.
Are they American bison?? I know Europe has Wisent/European Bison and they're really cool-looking, but I didn't know there were American bison in European farms. Wild
They are American bisons, just checked. Also there seems to be few more farms around Finland with them too, and Sweden has them also. It is pretty wild.
The eye contact thing isn't always an issue if you're in a car, they usually aren't that keyed up and tend to be used to vehicles. Last year in Yellowstone though I did see someone honk at a small group of individuals crossing the road, presumably by someone who overestimates how thick their car door is, because a bison could fold it like tin foil if they really wanted to. Don't agitate an animal that can total your car, especially when there are five of those animals surrounding you.
""Walked right up on" is a common colloquial phrase describing an accidental or surprising close encounter. It usually happens when you unknowingly approach a person, animal, or object—like a wild animal or a hidden hazard—before realizing they are there."
As the other person says--walk up to is not the same thing as walk up on. English is weird. But "walk up on" means you round a corner, and holy SHIT there's a THING. Walk up to = you see the thing and walk up to it.
Drove across the country after grad school. Spotted some bison crossing the road somewhere in South Dakota. Stopped a few hundred feet away. 15 minutes later, bison still in road, now ~50 feet away. Turn off car to avoid any chance of spook. 15 minutes later, completely engulfed. 15 minutes later, dying from lack of AC sitting in the sun. 2 hours stuck in traffic without seeing another car. Most terrifying experience in my life.
You did good. The bison came closer because you were deliberately not trying to be a dick. They surrounded the car? They made you part of their herd. There is no higher honor.
Yep, we were engulfed (but only for a few minutes) in the bison herd there. One sniffed in the window of my car (a tiny Hyundai Accent) and I almost died. Those critters are really big

They're not on your road, your road is on their land

It is wild to see those in Finland, there is a farm along the road I drive semi-regular. I just like the look of them.

Close door, roll up window, no eye contact, hope for the best, drive away smoothly and quickly.

Those people tend to die pretty quickly, so they're not that common.

you'd think that but... if you Google "Touron" and sort for videos you'll find endless hours of entertainment.

Every time I see something like this I think "Wait, there's no camera person with them? They are there alone with a camera on a tripod?" lol

We walked right up on one of these guys in a parking lot at Yellowstone, they are crazy big.
DefinitelyNotWhoYouThink
well you're an asshole then
zer0vector
Huh? We came around a dumpster and he was just standing there. We backed off very very quickly.

I'd sooner go up to a strange woman, reach out and go "HONK!!" than invade the personal space of such a creature.

NGL, I would have been ok with a lower honor. They made me acutely aware of my car's smallness.
RedTailedHawk
Used to live there. My guess is you were in or near Custer state park.
KuldFyt
I think? I camped at Wind Cave that night, so I saw a lot of signs for Custer?
RedTailedHawk
Custer state park is generally where you'll see them on the roadside.
