People will jut push the buttons over and over to make sure they got all the stories, or just because they can. Need to employ countermeasures or you’ll always be out of paper.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No one was using it but me. 😒

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wondering that tis is still "needed" in smartphone-times

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I needed it! I would never have read a short gem about a magical little fir tree.

About the same size as a CVS receipt

For one item

Still shorter than a Walgreens receipt though.

Me, a man of culture... (multiple gigs of fiction on phone)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...and then the little fir tree was chopped down and turned into paper to print this story. What a twist!

I blame Shel Silverstein (1930-1999)

It's made from pulp, not trees

Neat!! I hope they add genre selection for the next generation of story dispensing machines in the future.

3 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 4

Maybe having it be random will help people be exposed to new things. I tend to get too focused on the old comfortable safe genres.

Wow, that's not just a short storyβ€”it’s a tall tale for a little fir tree! πŸŽ„ I hope you didn't need to check it as luggage. Did the dispenser also print a sequel, or just a novella about its cousin, the mighty oak?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did not read the story about the little fir tree past that first line but I'm assuming its about it's adventure and character development into a cvs style short story receipt.

Now connect it to AO3 so I can print out a story about Harry Potter getting nailed by Goku while I wait out my layover.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ran into one of these at a market in Santa Barbara, CA a few years back

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I developed that I would definitely put a CVS total sale and tax part at the very end of the printout. But actually it would be cool if it had like a discount coupon for the coffee shop or something to reward people who actually get one and read it.

They had these at a mall I went to in France a couple years back. My youngest got SO many of them. A couple are stuck on the outside of their wardrobe still.

This is basically the same as "the bard" in one of Isaac Asimov's short stories (consequently what Google named their AI after)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know everyone hates AI, but I think I'd love a version of this that can write high quality stories based on prompts you feed it from a machine like this. An Auto-Story dispenser. "Hi, I'd like a uhhhh.... Epic fantasy romp with a female protagonist who recently discovered she can manipulate the future with her thoughts and uhhhh... In the style of Enid Blyton."

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 7

Why not reach out to the people who publish short story collections already - e.g., Asimov's - and leverage their huge library of back issues? Seems like you would get better quality and you could support artists that way

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someday, killa. Someday…

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"I'd like a sci-fi with lasers, space boobies, hyperdrive, and big butts. Please!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The machine audibly sighs and paraphrases Firefly, again.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

shameless self plug here, but if you like an AI that can write a story, check out my AI, Vicky, at https://model.tanglebox.ai

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The problem with A.I. isn't what it can create. It's the system we're in. People aren't afraid of losing their Jobs, they're afraid of losing their Income, their Benefits, in America their Healthcare. A.I. "Stealing" jobs could be a wonderful thing that means less work, more free time. But, y'know... Capitalism.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

A.I.- even cheaper than off-shore slave labour wages.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And also they're using it to take the creative jobs. It's one thing to have AI run the assembly line, but when people have free time and more money they tend towards being creative, so taking that way means less opportunity for that work and more people stuck doing nothing, or forced back to menial labor.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

No, what crowlands said was on point. What you said sanctifying creativity is reactionary non sense. Sounds almost as backwards as a clergy saying church is the only way to get redemption and go to heaven as if that was real.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The main issue is that AI isn't trained just off of dead, public domain authors. They're trained off of living people, which is to say these authors are having their works stolen rather than receiving due compensation.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

Yeah, look at art school. Those students just learn innumerable artists styles and then add them all to their own! The thieves...

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

An AI is not a sapient person. If you can't see that I suggest getting help due to your disconnect from reality.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Dunno why you're getting downvoted. Didn't think there were that many NFT fans on imgur. (Because the same people saying "AI is the Next Big Thing!" were saying NFTs were the Next Big Thing. Current AI crop is predictive text with a large library. Nothing more. It's not making anything useful, it's just a crappy parrot. And this method can *never* improve. It can't understand any language. It's just guessing what comes next through statistics. Better statistics don't make it smarter.)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

everyone hates A.I? we are in very different communities

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Imgur's stance on AI is pretty random, not leaning strongly towards either "side". A few people *really* hate it, and vocalize it at every opportunity. But the majority seems somewhat positive about it, since they're here to look at neat stuff, and AI makes neat stuff.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bro, the comic book community haaaaates A.I. All artists do.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't see the 10-minute option there

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1,3,5 that’s it.
