Surprised Dubai didn't give her the death penalty for trying to commit suicide
syko2k
Translation: Don't go there.
HandiCaptain
In a sane world the UAE should get absolutely fucked on for starting an international incident over some dumb shit. Ireland is being far more polite than is deserved. Return the Irish citizen to Ireland by this date or else should be the only communication the officials in Dubai get on the matter.
RandidlySquared
The problem with that is the UAE has the finances and military to wipe Ireland off the map and put up a serious fight if the UK, or even US, were to get involved. Ireland has to be polite because they are basically a pomeranian negotiating with a pack of rottweilers.
wilsonx1999
Fuck that place, if they want to belong to a modern society, they should behave like one, fuck their ridiculous laws.
Alaaraaf
Their entire business model is being a playground for the super rich. It's the antithesis of wanting to be a modern society.

zeusdemigod131
Is it just me or is it weird a country can stop a person from returning home/not deport them over a purely non-violent crime?
idiotsonfire
If you think you have to visit an Islamic country, no, you don't.
HelpfulCorn
I wouldn't even take a connecting flight through Qatar when that was one of the options
idiotsonfire
Good. Self defense is as much a mentality as a weapon. If it isn't an absolute requirement for you to survive to go through Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or any of those countries...DON'T.
HelpfulCorn
Yeah seriously, I was a woman traveling alone, what if something went wrong with the connection? As it turned out I got really sick on the outbound flight and spent an unscheduled night in London. Much better plan
CatskinnerKeen
Stop * going * to * Dubai!!!
JohnnyLawlessEsq
Dubai is getting awfully big for their britches.
AmbientPlatypus
I went to Dubai once for work, and it was... someplace I will never visit again unless I have to.

You mean SpecOps:the line? Where you literally murder a bunch of civilians in the name of Freedom™?
Cptbluebeard7
I've heard the game called many things, but, considering the message behind it, cathartic is alarming.
redtails2649
It's a horribly repressive place, especially for foreigners
PineappleLoopsBroether
Next time you have to, just say you don’t want to, and don’t go.

Who the fuck goes to the UAE **on purpose**? Especially white women.. something something tigers and faces

Remove yourself around people who wants to go to UAE. you'll avoid a ton of drama and ignorance
Ghlargh
UAE, China, Russia, North Korea. All countries on the list of places you should never go to, for these reasons and more.
NonstopRampage
At this point, it's a great judge of character, if you decide to step foot there, or worse, are EXCITED to. In which case, here's hopin' you don't come back.
Sebastopol140
Such a progressive and modern country...
WilliamWeird
As always, such liberties are only for the wealthy and royalty

I’m glad religion isn’t used to oppress people here!

Everything that Christofascists want to do here, Islamofascists already have going on in full swing over there.

Religion is a tool of the evil, no good ever comes from it
TheWombatStrikesAgain
Still baffles me why some westerners choose to move to these countries. Especially women.
Sebastopol140
They go "oh look, luxury" and just see the shining things... and forget about the "oh look, no liberty" part.
GeorgeCostabaplaps
I just started watching the Wire
mstalltree
Nobody ever said that. People familiar with the Emirate and other Gulf nations know very well that there's the facade, and underneath the glitz and glamour are strict laws. Gulf nations put up with foreigners because they have to, not because they want to.
ItTookMeAGoodWhileToComeUpWithAUsername
Plenty of people say this
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
People on here do say it, though. They insist on it.
Chalybos
Ah, the UAE, another open and progressive location to never fucking visit. Ever.
deltaforcain
I don’t care for people being apologist over these “cultural differences”. These countries are barbaric, backward and uncivilised to the highest degree.
LegionExMachina
What do you expect from a country built by slave labor?
Bladedrummer
Read that out loud, slowly.
slayston
That's most countries...
LegionExMachina
Most countries got the memo 200+ years ago. The AUE and other Gulf countries actively confiscate their foreign worker's passports, force them to live in slums, and wait out their visas to avoid paying them for all the work that they do.
RARusk
Are you talking about the UAE or the US?

Yeah no way in hell you could pay me to travel, let alone live in that country. Too scary for women, no respect or freedom.
SmashySashimi
Why is ‘attempting suicide’ in quotes?
dalaiyoda
Because it's a quote.
dasAchteck
Presumably because it's a quotation.

Jeez, I don't wanna be all victim blamey here, but why in the name of all that is good would a woman move to Dubai?

I can't wait for these asshole medieval Arabic theocracies to slide back into obscurity when their oil runs out. No more bought football teams, no more ridiculous skyscrapers, and artificial islands. No more western experts, Pakistan firemen and Philippine slave labour. Fuck'em.

Dubai barely had any oil, that's why they invested in tourism so heavily. Saudi Arabia have that luxury.
Waidonut
They're investing heavily in other venues so when their oil runs out, they'll continue to be rich evil misogynists

It's too late they already are diversifying, I was reading about how there well aware of oil limits and are already taking steps.

America shouldn't get too comfortable. Attempted suicide used to be illegal, and still is (although not usually prosecuted) depending on the state. The current Supreme Court might have a look at that next...

Thank you, I was gonna say where are those details?
GlowstickJedi
Being kept private for now mostlikely.

I was wondering why none of the comments mentioned that. she was likely raped, and tried to end her suffering, which led to more suffering
melmboundanddown
She is never going to be able to admit she was raped there, especially if the attacker is a citizen.
pancreas
scratch that, the suicide thing might even be a fake claim in order to silence her
Mercurybird
Sounds about right actually.

For the life of me I cannot understand why any sane person would travel to the Middle East. Is there a single safe & sane country there?
BDBottom
Lebanon was nice, that's why Israel had to bomb the hell out of it in the 70s and 80s.
volch1tsa
Turkey is beautiful and pretty safe and sane in major cities. As a woman I would never live there but I love visiting. They also take care of their animals unlike some of the rest of the middle east.
gft8gd5khn101
Israel is good as a tourist if you stick to liberal places in Tel Aviv.
givemepickles
I lived in Israeli for a year as an American transfer student.
No. No. No. no.
Evil place.
Completely popped my pro-Israel bubble.
Evil evil filled place.
Not all Jews are evil. But there is a strong presence of evil in that county. And horrible racism against everyone who isn’t Jewish.

BiomechPhoenix
Is Jordan okay? I've heard it's at least above average.
Pikkupanda
Jordan is the only country I’d consider visiting in the Middle East. I’m a redhead and unless I decided to wear hijabs all the time (in the places they’re optional) I’d stick out like a sore thumb and basically invite abuse. No thank you.
CaptHurricane
Jordan is really nice to visit. Amman was a very clean city and I felt pretty safe there. Everyone I met either had a relative or a friend who lived in America LOL. Petra is also absolutely amazing to visit.
onlyhalfghost
Persia was pretty nice before the Americans set off a revolution when the Shah wanted to use oil money to benefit the people.
Sooner70
Well, if you've got a time machine, I'll hop right on it!
alwaysacleric
I'll say we do have a bad habit of doing that. Enabling and supporting the death of democracies in favor of certain corporations and political interests. Destabilizing regions is, unfortunately, a sound strategy for ensuring you stay on the top.
onlyhalfghost
(you may note that it is now called Iran and is absolutely not safe or sane, however...)
alwaysacleric
It was always Iran to Iranians.
onlyhalfghost
fair enough. All my maps that predate the revolution have it labelled Persia, but I'm not a local.
alwaysacleric
Well, that makes sense then.
alwaysacleric
Iran*

alwaysacleric
It was always called Iran by Iranians. Persia was the western name for it.
ProppaGanda
I know, cabin crew, job stuff. But i would rather go homeless here in Sweden than take a job that would force me to live in Dubai and I will never ever understand Europeans who move there.
SaladinIskander
There are a lot of young Irish people who moved to and work in Dubai, I've a good few friends still over there. Mostly it's due to money, the wages there are great compared to home, no housing issues, great services, it's a very low tax economy as well. I think the other attraction is the lifestyle, you can kinda live like a King over there if you're western even on an average wage. Great weather, beaches, low-key party culture too.
ProppaGanda
Ah yes party culture in a state that forbids alcohol unless you are privileged enough.
SaladinIskander
Yeah there are a lot of hotels that have their own behind the scenes private clubs and bars, officially just for westerners.
ProppaGanda
I must say that I harbor extreme disgust towards things like that
Hyzenthlay021
https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-student-sentenced-one-year-prison-dubai-airport-staff Legal abuse of foreigners in Dubai.
ErgoCue
We don’t know her situation. She may not have had much of a choice of employment. I would do my best to never work there either, but if I were desperate I might consider it.
STGxDante
They literally steal ppls passports and turn them into slaves building the city. Fuck Dubai & the UAE
WrongUn
Move? Shit, even holiday there! Absolute shit pit, all the beauty in the world available and people choose to go an artificial embarrassment built on blood and oil, it wrecks my head.
pareidoliaperson
So like America?? Ya'll are prejudiced fuck heads. Racists cunts.
WrongUn
I'm not saying everyone from Dubai is a bad person, I'm talking about the state itself and its system. I hate the Chinese government but know many lovely Chinese people. I used to date one. I also dated a Russian girl and I dislike the Russian government. So I'm not overly racist, I think it's fair to say, you can hate a place and it's systemic human rights abuses whilst recognising that good civilians are in every country. The funniest thing is, you just assumed I'm American.
cosonfused
money. That's the only reason people go there.
IrishPub
Fuck, I'd rather be homeless in Sweden than live in the US.
Drix1942
They think it's prestige or some shit, because the country is oil rich. It's straight up bullshit.
HappyPetunia
I’m sure they also think it will never happen to them because they are verysmart.
labirmane
Honestly, certain people are attracted by the very things that make us recoil. There is a very weird vibe amongst the Euro-expat community there, very nouveau-riche, entitlement, and a lot of 'looking the other way' to protect their spot at the feeding trough.
gstuttgart
واسِطة Wasta
benreilly73
Sure, but I don't think this Irish stuardess was nouveau-riche
labirmane
I wasn't implying that, but replying to the comment from the person who was questioning why anyone would live in Dubai.
benreilly73
That makes sense
bourbonandbaddecisions
Never understood why any women would willingly travel to or live in a region where women are treated as property.
velicitia
Yeah, Texas is a shithole ...
bourbonandbaddecisions
This is becoming way too accurate.
zFUBARz
My family had an offer of contract to go live in Saudi Arabia back in the early 90's, Dad was relatively high up in construction. Pay was incredible, couple years of basically free living on top of that. but yeah, they didn't want to put my mom in a place like that, or if we stayed on longer and a daughter came alone.
zFUBARz
along*
insertanyname
Exactly!!!! I would never go there and can't fathom why any woman would.
rbudrick
The live part is kinda against their will most times (born there, can't leave easily), but yeah.
johnwilliams123
I'm a woman and want to travel there- there's a lot of beautiful things to see there, namely architecture and the stunning landscapes for me. I've travelled around other Middle Eastern countries and it's not that unsafe, depending on the location. Probably ok for women to travel alone, but I'd never live there alone.
PrincessWasabi
You gotta be willing to take the risk like this then. I remember some woman was raped, and they charged her with premarital sex
pareidoliaperson
So I guess she's taking the same risk traveling to Bahamas? America? Brazil? India? Canada? Because women get raped there? Or are you claimen women never get raped there? This is just another hating islamic country circle jerk.
PrincessWasabi
“And then got charged with premarital sex “ like faced jail time or lashes
mikeatike
I'm gonna guess this is what happened here. The FA wasn't suicidal, she was attacked, and they arrested her to avoid her implicating someone
johnwilliams123
That sounds bad! You have to weight pros and cons- take reasonable risks and precautions, so you can still live your life. I'm kind of risk-averse, so I'd do more research if I were serious. If I were to travel there, I'd always go out with my husband. If I were to live there, I'd live in a safe area with lots of expat women, maybe a gated community, etc. There will always be statistical outliers who scare people off. We need to look at the how significant that number is. It's about what you>
johnwilliams123
want to do in life and how much risk you're willing to accept, like anything else.
LiterallyAWizard
NGL, I have a hard time understanding why people would VISIT there, let alone live there. It gives me some serious Vegas vibes, in the sense that everything is glitzy, glamorous and extravagant to hide how genuinely fucked it is as a place to be
mjperk
In other words, a beautiful place full of ugly people.
dingofdong
Yeah, huge same here. Even if I weren't a gay trans woman (and thus liable to be assaulted, arrested or "disappear" if I visited), the fact that it is a quite literal dystopia would put me off for good. Insane oil wealth and modern day slavery prop up an absurd exploiter class' insanely wasteful, unsustainable ego-trips; the emirate's status and fortune is nakedly built on a foundation of megalomaniacal prestige projects to impress and flatter dipshits with more money than sense... no thanks tbh
OverwhelmingSurplusOfDiggity
I visited there when it was just starting to be like that. The Burj al-Arab was still being constructed, old souks were still around, etc. Back then I enjoyed it, and I also enjoyed Abu Dhabi… but today?
Today I have a family, and I’d rather not take girls to that vile fucking shithole.
onlyhalfghost
a shithole with no reason to be there except that it already is, completely artificial even by the standards of economics
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
I have a friend from India who visited, he said he was so disappointed. He said the whole place just looks so fake and sad. He's never going back.
KerryCoder
I actually *lived* in Vegas earlier this year, in a really "economically disadvantaged" area downtown... and while you're not wrong, Vegas is *no* Dubai.
pareidoliaperson
So why VISIT america? Mass shootouts, kiddy fiddling, rape, mysoginy, anti-abortion, police brutality, and so many more? Or are we make up reasons for ourself to normalize it ("it's just a small of us") and generilize others ("it's all of them")?
EvoNovus5000
At least Vegas has a working sewage system. Look up the Burj Khalifa Poop Trucks. I legitimately wish I was joking.
DidItForScience
If you are rich, you are totally insulated from the negatives and never see much of every day Dubai citizens, and certainly not the abuses of foreign workers going on. You can do some of the most exciting and luxurious things there. They also throw shit tons of money at sports brands to bring them over for events. The people who go there for all that don't give a fuck.
DarkwingDuc
Dude. Vegas is a shit hole, but it isn't based on literal slave labor and government sanctioned human trafficking that kills 10,000 migrant workers ever year.
LarvaLamp
No, just organized crime, so much better.
dingofdong
I mean effectively so is dubai, but in dubai's case the organised criminals are the literal royal family with obscene wealth, privilege and protections to match. There's a reason that Dubai has so many ridiculously wasteful failed vanity projects littering the emirate
MCNewYorkLives
Ehh, I'd take Vegas over Dubai. At least there's still reasonable laws in Vegas. Dubai? You'll be arrested for being raped.
pandajack
You couldn't pay me to go to Vegas. Although you couldn't pay me to set foot anywhere in that whole god forsaken country.
PectorialMuscles
Most of the US is pretty rural and devoid of large population centers. You couldn't be paid to visit some of the most beautiful natural parks in the world? You don't even have to unnecessarily interact with Americans to do that. Your viewpoint is rather ignorant of anything American, yet strong despite that ignorance. Interesting how I think you'd be the same person to claim that's how Americans behave.
nero4ty2
You’ve seen too many movies, the us is pretty great for the most part
mikeatike
I live in the US. I just hate deserts and light pollution.
greentights
Honestly, it might be the best time to visit, before November. Might get scary then.
pandajack
You think movies are how people judge the US? I judge the US by the actions and words of the people who live there.
mikeatike
A European friend said an interesting thing yesterday. "Amercians always make cultural references via movies."
He had asked me what I mean when I said the "Canadian redneck accent." And I sent him clips of Strange Brew.
nero4ty2
I’ve lived and worked in a few very touristy areas, number one question from international tourists, “where are all the guns? I thought everyone carried a gun” usually followed by questions about the lack of gangs and riots and police, just things that are depicted in media but not a part of life for 99% of people. Are there issues? Of course but mostly for residents, not people coming to hike the Grand Canyon or see NYC
TilSovngarde
I’ve always thought same. Why do people visit those places? And why in the world, especially as a woman, would someone MOVE there??
NotSomoneElse68
I know a woman that instantly divorced her husband when he accepted a job in Saudi Arabia back in the 80s.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
Wow, imagine accepting a job either without telling your wife, or knowing she doesn't want to move there because she'd be property. He deserved that divorce.
NotSomoneElse68
It was bad and surprising. It went so poorly that I remember it and I was only 10 at the time (my friends parents)
FormerlySable
I had to spend 6 months working in Doha, Qatar. I hated the way so many of my colleagues could not see the ugliness under the glittery façade. To them it was a kind of playground, even though none of us is rich.
TilSovngarde
Doha was my experience as well
DadOnTheInternet
Hey I live in Vegas! Take that back, Vegas is way worse than you think.
dingofdong
I mean, I'll grant you that Vegas is almost certainly worse than I think (although weirdly it's relatively water-conscious compared to other places in that part of the US), but I promise you dubai is worse. It's practically an absolute monarchy, being run by the worst kind of narcissist techbro dipshits, and runs on literal slave labour.
DadOnTheInternet
It has to be later conscious. We get less than 1.5% of the water rights to lake mead. Hahahaha… senators from the 30’s I tell yah
Itslukus
Come on dude, I live here too and it's even worse than you think it is.
OverwhelmingSurplusOfDiggity
My favourite part of Vegas is the part that’s about an hour’s drive away from Vegas.
KerryCoder
That's only because they sell lottery tickets there.
