Wars fans don't hate 6/9 of their movies. A tiny minority of purist grognards, maybe. Most folks like 'em all, judging by the box office
and toy sales, regardless of what a tiny minority thinks.
ChefHannibal
only star trek fans think star wars fans really give a shit.

Yeah, us Babylon 5 fans only hate 1 season and a spinoff.... (actually I liked Crusade, but a lot of people didnt)
Sheldonian
I've enjoyed some of the moments in Star Wars movies including the 1-3 episodes and the new trilogy, but tbh I prefer the Star Trek universe
IrateWolfe
This is about how I feel- I have enjoyed every entry in both franchises to some extent, but Dtar Trek just feels more relevant to me
Harsamina
They're beloved for different reasons.

Trek fans haven't liked anything since ds9.

I actually liked Episode III and VII, and I loved Solo and Rogue One, so I'm more a 7 out of 11 fan. And Trek 2,3,4 and 6 were pretty good.

Neither do Star Wars fans. The one's who hate it are just children who get mad if things don't go their way.

Haven't seen a good Star Trek movie yet.

I have The Expanse and first season of Altered Carbon to fan about. Not movies but still.

Real fans don’t hate the prequels
No true Scotsman! Fallacy
BrassVicugnaPacos
I like both, Star Wars and Star Trek. Both have a different focus how to tell a story, never understand why people compare them.
Same reason some people get butthole deep in politics, or local sports. They like to affiliate with a team
BonIvermectin
Well how many Star Trek series are there again? We've had like 10 or 11? TOS, TNG, and DS9 are really good. Aaaaaaaand the rest is arguable.
Starhaven350
Enterprise had its moments they started to find their feet when they got canned. All this new stuff though... yuck
Remember. Trekkies are as contentious a crowd as my fellow prequel memers.

Except there’s never really been real hatred for 3. I’d argue it’s better than 6.
Not hatred, it was just kinda boring, and started the trend of blowing up the Enterprise every few movies
Yeah, although it’s probably the only one where I thought blowing up the Enterprise was actually justified and not just lazy writing.
It’s just funny that the whole thing started with 5: “That was awful. So was 1. 3 wasn’t great, so ODD NUMBER CURSE!!!”
BobbieNell
Search for Spock was my favorite as a kid.something about stealing the Enterprise, I think.
alpacasaurusrex
The only one I genuinely hated was the one with VGer. Otherwise, I like them all. Sure whales in the ship was a bit silly, but I liked large
swaths of the movie otherwise.

StarGate. More science & more scientists. You need science in science fiction.

StarGate is science is "science" lmao. Star Wars is straight up wizards fighting with magic swords. Star Trek is allegory. I like all of em

90% of all past incorrect science used to be correct science. So no.
Alright. Can you show me where wormholes and time travel used to be correct science?
If FTL exists, then time travel does to. There are ways to wiggle relativity math to allow them. So fanciful/theoretical, but still science.
I've never heard anything that would allow FTL.

Yeah, I have to agree, my mom finally convinced me to watch the shows and they really are excellent. Please let Amazon green light the

And not a horrifying racist episode in the series, that I recall at least. A bit of that sadly in Trek/Wars.

BUUUUUULLLSHIT trek and wars "fans" alike hate everything that didn't air in their childhood. It is known
chaseNC
With Star Trek movies it's if it is an even or odd number. Odds are bad, Evens are good.
dooremouse
There are outliers. I like almost all of the new Star Trek and I'm 45.
bjo23
47, same. I may like some Trek/Wars more than others, but there's nothing I "hate".
jennym123
I feel really attacked right now.
I meant what I said
Put another way: kids aren't too discerning, so they'll like any old [prequel] crap. Adults are more informed viewers and have tastes.
jawsoshuell
Adults can have more informed views and tastes, but by and large that's not the excuse for adult fans hating everything.
What's really happening is that their childhood memories have been so thoroughly modified to be more and greater than they actually were.
I think it's exactly these rose-colored lenses that make a lot of folks who saw the prequels as children/adolescents fond of them. I don't
claim the OT films don't have flaws, and as an adult I'm definitely more aware of them, espectially ROTJ. But they're original, not recycled
And when new content fails to live up to these ridiculous standards with no basis on the actual reality of their childhoods, they screech.
corpofilth
32 now. As a kid one of the things I resolved to never do was to be one of those bitter old people that dismissed young people preferences.
That's a good attitude to have, and yeah, tastes are subjective and differ over time. Having seen more movies as an adult, tho, I can say
without bitterness that the Star Wars prequels are just not good movies. Ep 3 is the best of the lot; ep 1 is a tedious wreck. As s/o else
here commented, my attitude toward them is more disappointment than hate--they take up space in the canon that could have been filled by
33 here, huge OT and EU fan. It's like people think that any new movie is going to go back in time and erase what they watched as kids.

IncoggnitoMode
How the fuck did Abrams manage to do a better job with Trek then Wars. Since it was his childhood dream to do Wars and he never watched Trek
callocosplay
It wasn't entirely his fault. Kennedy let them go into that trilogy, knowing it would be a trilogy, with no road map of what they were doing
Even Lucas had an idea of where his trilogies were going...

That's precisely the problem, he made a fan-film. The director of Wrath of Khan wasn't a Star Trek fan but collaborated with the writers.

Because they didn't start out with a plan. It's like one or two people ad libbed each movie with no storyline or cohesion.
69thStPepper
I would argue that he didn't. Those movies were aggressively mediocre and did nothing to recommended the franchise
hitdog42
You're aggressively mediocre
I like to think I'm passively mid-tier, but I'll take that over excessive lense-flare
MCNewYorkLives
It could be argued that 7 was an homage and he has a specific vision. Then when 8 stomped on the vision, instead of continuing with the new
therealpopkiller
Its not an homage. An homage is a loving tribute. Force Awakens is a cynical, incoherent cash grab.
Direction, he said "fuck it, imma reset everything and get it back to what I want", and that resulted in everything being awkward
crushingbore
His Star Trek movies are good, they just aren't Star Trek.
RadonGaming
They are therefore NOT good Star Trek movies by definition. He ruined everything with his 'action' approach.
That's what I mean though. If you just wanna watch a dumb space action movie they're fine.

Oh I would argue that there are fantastic as a space sci-fi action series. I would agree they are terrible ST movies. Like Resident Evil.
drone6040

williamrichards
TFA is pretty much on par with JJ Trek (bad). Rian Johnson subverting the plot with TLJ really put everybody in a bind.
What put everyone in a bind was the 3rd director bowing out, JJ filling in, and deciding to just continue his own movie instead.
I'd argue that the 3rd director bowed out because he wanted absolutely nothing to do with the mess that RJ left him.
He left before RJ finished, and cited issues with Kathleen Kennedy. And it's unfortunate, because he might've continued what RJ was saving.
He would have had access to the script and the main ideas of what was happening. KK and RJ were together. RJ didn't get close to saving shit
DatDarthCaedus
Subverting WHAT plot? JJ set up pretty much nothing (as usual), and there was no overarching plan anyways.
TFA was a homeless man's A New Hope. A homeless man's retelling of Empire Strikes Back would have been disappointing, but better than TLJ
JJ Abrams is a hack who got lucky bc he made a Star Wars movie instead of a Trek movie & it made money. Everything else he’s done is shit
OriginalSyn
Making a trek movie more actiony is what was kind of needed for trek, but star wars needed more plot and JJ doesn't do that
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
It wasn't needed at all, that's not what Trek is.
LurkerOfDarkness
Trek has always been centered on the drama, the talk, the action is there to support it, not the other way around, JJ doesn't understand it.
dennydorko
He directed 2 Star Wars and 2 Star Treks. Only the first of each was good.
Star Wars was ruined, because they made “Star Wars movies”, but the old SW movies weren’t “Star Wars movies”, they were space samurai movies
charlie2979
A new hope is just a Vietnam movie.
GhostBear3067

Maybe. Too hungover to remember.

SeeShark
I will die on the hill that Ep 8 actually knew what it was trying to do and had something to add to Star Wars, even if the execution was 1/
8 was the absolute worst of them all. By a wide margin, too.
mizzamir
8 was idiotic. If jumping to hyperspace could destroy things in front of you, there would be hyperspace missiles to destroy the Death Stars.
not perfect. 7 was straight-up a remake of 4, and was decent at it, and 9 was a disaster with no direction. The prequels were as you say; 2/
They had no direction going into the recent trilogy or any idea of where it was going.
they were trying to do "Star Wars" instead of space samurais. Even the Force stopped being Buddhist and became Christianity. 3/3
They tried Star Trekking the force by posing a scientific background for it instead of retaining the mysticism.
Acc87
I sorta like 7 as it simply looks great. 8 turned it up, and 9 tried way too hard even just in terms of visuals.
Fedotia
I cringed during all of 7. Darth horny teen wrecking his stuff with a lightbaseball bat doesnt have the same ring as Darth Vader.
StephenDaniels
Admiral Prom Dress was nearly too much to take; but Its impossible to accept Luke trying to murder his nephew because the kid had a dream.
Because Snoke was influencing Luke, you mean.
No. Snoke was a busted up, weak version of Palpatine and when Luke faced Palps one of them ended up at the bottom of the reactor shaftcont>
I'm getting downvoted for it, but the movie makes it clear that Snoke was influencing both Ben and Luke.
ShouldersDeepInAHorse
the 1st sequel was just a repeat of the first movie, the 2nd was a Kennedy Trainwreck of switching scripts and directors, the 3rd was death.
Much as I dislike Kennedy for what she did when first hired, that wasn't really on her. It was the plan between the original 3 directors.
She had the authority to override them, but in this case she let the creatives decide.
Syovere
Mm. For all the shit we give Lucas for the prequels, at least he was trying to tell a consistent story that wasn't a clone of the OT.
also, why tf did palpatine get brought back?
Because they couldn't write a proper villain or protagonist to save their life, so they brought back an old one an redid the entire ->
-> "Oh my god the main baddie is my parent!" plot twist, except with a much worse ending.
morgulking75
He was in the books
Okay but repeating a stupid thing someone else did doesn't make it less stupid
gitguuud
His Trek movies weren’t good either
EndOfMeaning
The lens flares alone (nearly every shot has one) makes the movies (especially the first) nearly impossible to watch.
LarvaLamp
It's funny, I never noticed the lens flares until grumpy people started complaining. I guess stuff like that doesn't bother me.
Nah. It's like Resident Evil. They were good movies. They weren't good Star Trek movies.
fantastapotamus
Not having played RE, I can say I really enjoyed the first 3 movies. 4 and 5 were 3D garbage, and 6 was meh.
Imnothrilled
He did an incredible job as McCoy and it was a shame his role was minimized. First huge mistake of the new movies.
Conqueeftadore
Respectfully I’d have to disagree. For the first one anyway. The opening scene where Kirk’s dad sacrifices himself was incredible.
Incredibly chaotic, not at all aligned with canon, and so ugly.
Did you watch the movie? Different Universe/time line so the only thing that’s Canon is from Old Spocks past and what took place before kirk
Does 8 times over count? The timeline shift is from a little inside the movie, problems start before.
They said a better job by comparison, not good.
Yeah, in the same way as vomit smells better than liquid diarrhea.
I have seen those smell the same, from the same person. They were having a very bad day.

Remember that Galaxy Quest was voted one of the better Star Trek films at a convention.
That's their point - Star Trek films are overall pretty bad, so Galaxy Quest was voted a better Trek film than most actual Trek films.
One of the GQ producers said approx. "Most people don't realize that on top of everything else we had to do a good Star Trek episode too."

I always thought it was weird that DS9 never got a movie. I guess the studio got gunshy after Nemesis, but it's not even the same cast.
yifin
What would you even make a movie about with that cast? DS9 is best trek but the characters all went every which way..
Set it before the end of the show, like the Cowboy Bebop movie. Or make it while the show was still running.
With our luck, it'd end up like the second x files movie rather than the first.
Sauniche
They kept having to make up weird ass excuses to shove Worf into the later TNG movies. A DS9 movie would have been full of that
IcarusTower
FC he's fighting the Borg, Nemesis he's at Riker /Troi wedding, those make sense. Insurrection Picard asks y he's there and he never answers
Exactly. It'd be one big getting the band back scene together again & again. TNG was episodic but DS9 was serialized. Too hard to do
A movie after they wrapped up everything. I wouldn't mind a spinoff movie/show dealing with the remains of the dominion.

It truly was garbage
vurcease

TheMouseOfMadness
JJ Wars is the worst Star Wars... huh, I'm noticing a pattern
IlDepo
JJ trek is indeed bad but if you ask me episodes 1 and 8 are far worse.
PleaseRespectMyAsshole
His movies were ruined by Rian Johnson coming in and being like "fuck everything that has ever happened before."
Ohhhh...I struck a couple of nerves of the "we will jerk off to anything that hates on JJ" people. Fuck yeah!!
Incorrect. 7 was a straight up remake of 4. 8 tried to do something new and interesting. 9 was a clusterfuck of retcons and McGuffins
So unless you want "EXACTLY what happened before, just on a DIFFERENT desert planet with an orphan" for every movie... JJ ruined it
Imdead124
I don't really understand this view. I thought the only thing majorly wrong with TLJ was Finn's whole "storyline"

Yeah, although it’s probably the only one where I thought blowing up the Enterprise was actually justified and not just lazy writing.

seitanicverses
Put another way: kids aren't too discerning, so they'll like any old [prequel] crap. Adults are more informed viewers and have tastes.
jawsoshuell
Adults can have more informed views and tastes, but by and large that's not the excuse for adult fans hating everything.
jawsoshuell
What's really happening is that their childhood memories have been so thoroughly modified to be more and greater than they actually were.
seitanicverses
I think it's exactly these rose-colored lenses that make a lot of folks who saw the prequels as children/adolescents fond of them. I don't
seitanicverses
claim the OT films don't have flaws, and as an adult I'm definitely more aware of them, espectially ROTJ. But they're original, not recycled

seitanicverses
That's a good attitude to have, and yeah, tastes are subjective and differ over time. Having seen more movies as an adult, tho, I can say
seitanicverses
without bitterness that the Star Wars prequels are just not good movies. Ep 3 is the best of the lot; ep 1 is a tedious wreck. As s/o else

How the fuck did Abrams manage to do a better job with Trek then Wars. Since it was his childhood dream to do Wars and he never watched Trek

callocosplay

Disney fucked it up
williamrichards
TFA is pretty much on par with JJ Trek (bad). Rian Johnson subverting the plot with TLJ really put everybody in a bind.
jawsoshuell
What put everyone in a bind was the 3rd director bowing out, JJ filling in, and deciding to just continue his own movie instead.
williamrichards
I'd argue that the 3rd director bowed out because he wanted absolutely nothing to do with the mess that RJ left him.
jawsoshuell
He left before RJ finished, and cited issues with Kathleen Kennedy. And it's unfortunate, because he might've continued what RJ was saving.
williamrichards
He would have had access to the script and the main ideas of what was happening. KK and RJ were together. RJ didn't get close to saving shit
DatDarthCaedus
Subverting WHAT plot? JJ set up pretty much nothing (as usual), and there was no overarching plan anyways.
williamrichards
TFA was a homeless man's A New Hope. A homeless man's retelling of Empire Strikes Back would have been disappointing, but better than TLJ
therealpopkiller
Only the first of each was good.

pritolus
8 was the absolute worst of them all. By a wide margin, too.
mizzamir
8 was idiotic. If jumping to hyperspace could destroy things in front of you, there would be hyperspace missiles to destroy the Death Stars.
SeeShark
not perfect. 7 was straight-up a remake of 4, and was decent at it, and 9 was a disaster with no direction. The prequels were as you say; 2/
callocosplay
They had no direction going into the recent trilogy or any idea of where it was going.
SeeShark
they were trying to do "Star Wars" instead of space samurais. Even the Force stopped being Buddhist and became Christianity. 3/3
LurkerOfDarkness
They tried Star Trekking the force by posing a scientific background for it instead of retaining the mysticism.
Acc87
I sorta like 7 as it simply looks great. 8 turned it up, and 9 tried way too hard even just in terms of visuals.
Fedotia
I cringed during all of 7. Darth horny teen wrecking his stuff with a lightbaseball bat doesnt have the same ring as Darth Vader.
StephenDaniels
Admiral Prom Dress was nearly too much to take; but Its impossible to accept Luke trying to murder his nephew because the kid had a dream.
jawsoshuell
Because Snoke was influencing Luke, you mean.
StephenDaniels
No. Snoke was a busted up, weak version of Palpatine and when Luke faced Palps one of them ended up at the bottom of the reactor shaftcont>
jawsoshuell
I'm getting downvoted for it, but the movie makes it clear that Snoke was influencing both Ben and Luke.
ShouldersDeepInAHorse
the 1st sequel was just a repeat of the first movie, the 2nd was a Kennedy Trainwreck of switching scripts and directors, the 3rd was death.
jawsoshuell
Much as I dislike Kennedy for what she did when first hired, that wasn't really on her. It was the plan between the original 3 directors.
jawsoshuell
She had the authority to override them, but in this case she let the creatives decide.
Syovere
Mm. For all the shit we give Lucas for the prequels, at least he was trying to tell a consistent story that wasn't a clone of the OT.
Syovere
also, why tf did palpatine get brought back?
ShouldersDeepInAHorse
Because they couldn't write a proper villain or protagonist to save their life, so they brought back an old one an redid the entire ->
ShouldersDeepInAHorse

I recently watched the original series. WOW. kirk is a great dude. So much more kind then hes made out to be on the web.
TimTheEnchanter01
Nah man, I wouldn’t fight an octogenarian
TimmyTimm
irvingb01
["Amok Time" fight music intensifies]
LurkerOfDarkness
Please rise for the national anthem.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
I grew up with Kirk as well but also Picard, and like Picard better.
kluang
Sisko the best captain
MrHailstone
Sisko is a knockoff
ConfederacyOfDunces
Absolutely.
Whyt128
He was actually a terrible captain. He is remembered fondly because the writing of that series was superb.
LetsEatGrandpaCommasSaveLives
That thong thong thong thong thong
spicetothefoo
He's a great character, but TERRIBLE Captain
kluang
Picard could never pull the in the pale of moonlight
TheYoungBear
We can live with it
spicetothefoo
He wouldn't have
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
He would have found another solution, that didn't require war crimes.
Nirvash80
nesurame
oh man, Sisko is the very definition of Chaotic Good. He follows the rules like 60% of the time, and 40% of the time goes in guns blazing.
kluang
But 100%. Attack pattern delta.
yifin
Prolly why he and Kira got along so well.
crazyspelling
Remember that time he shot banned biological weapons at a planet to make it uninhabitable for Cardassians and didn't get court-martialled?
WaywardLurker
Pepperidge Farm remembers
kluang
No. He made inhospitable for human. And it's the Marquis he targets.
filben7
I don't hate any Trek movies, some are just cheesier than others. (JJ Trek is not star trek though, fuck that trash).
SomeDetroitGuy
Star Trek 5 was absolute trash
filben7
No, it was cheesy fun and it still had quotable scenes.
RelativeVelocity
It truly was garbage
vurcease
I try to perceive such cheesy aspects of them as homage to the original TV series.
PleaseRespectMyAsshole
Ohhhh...I struck a couple of nerves of the "we will jerk off to anything that hates on JJ" people. Fuck yeah!!
TheMouseOfMadness
Incorrect. 7 was a straight up remake of 4. 8 tried to do something new and interesting. 9 was a clusterfuck of retcons and McGuffins
TheMouseOfMadness
So unless you want "EXACTLY what happened before, just on a DIFFERENT desert planet with an orphan" for every movie... JJ ruined it
Imdead124
I don't really understand this view. I thought the only thing majorly wrong with TLJ was Finn's whole "storyline"
Imdead124
Sure, Luke feels out of character, but it's been like 30 years! Who knows wtf happened to him in that time, people change.
