It’s a Tandem Van de Graaff in the Orsay University (france). It can work with 15 MV.

Here’s what it looks like from the above. Yep it shaped like a penis...
The yellow part is the accelerator, the green part is where we do science, and I work at the small red cross on the map.

Here’s where I work ^^ It command the accelerator.

Here is the lead door which protect us from the radiations.

And just for you : some sci fi big science stuff we’re working on \o/. Don’t worry I’m allowed to post all of this pictures. Thank you and sorry for bad English! The first post : https://imgur.com/gallery/3PRyN

You need a new stool.

So a quick CT scan is out then?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if that's what you think a penis looks like you need to see a doctor

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You sure that isn't Doc Oc's lair?

A Gundam cannon! :)

Please, before every experiment you run, say quietly "conditions could hardly be more perfect..."

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You need 15MV to accelerate a particle? I can accelerate a 2 ton car with only 12 volts. Murica!

Fucking cool. Me more please.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

HUUULK

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So what does this do? Like obviously it accelerates particles, but why do we want to do that? Just curious.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

To smash them into eachother at enormous speeds in order to figure out what the most fundamental particles are, how they work and how 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the fundamental laws of nature work (and to check whether our current theories are right -> hypothesis testing) 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow what vault is this, just so I can check the vault tech societal preservation program is on track.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am envious :D

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and of course the number of the sector (on the map) is 420

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...has anyone before used a particle accelerator to fire up a bong?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It rather looks like the millennium falcon than a dick. Just so you now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, which vault tech bunker is this, just so I can check the vault tech societal preservation program is on track

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have a chain of paperclips?! Bery important!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just admit it, you're the janitor like we all suspected.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is this classified?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I said this to him yesterday, in Uk you would get fired for sure but the French must be more relaxed

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No it’s not it’s a 40 years old technology

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You bad English it up! Thanks for sharing. Have fun!!! I am hoping my little man chooses the Sorbonne. But I will go wherever he wants.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks ^^

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OP, are you sure you know what a penis looks like?

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

The most disproportionate penis I’ve ever seen

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You, Sir, have clearly never seen French penis

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It doesn't look like my penis that's for damn sure

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's look like HIS penis source: i'm the girlfriend

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That is a whistle. But whatever toots your flute....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s upside down.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

what would actually happen if you sat inside a particle accelerator and turned it on

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You get cancer

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It would be very difficult to get inside the part you're thinking of - it's the metal tube in the top image. 'Inside' the accelerator (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

where OP took the picture quite possibly has lower levels of radiation than the average in the outside world (because of all the shielding)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get inside and turn it on, pretty sure that's how you gain super powers

8 years ago | Likes 144 Dislikes 1

Didn't an engineer get shot in the head with it?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"We're just throwing science at the walls here to see what sticks. No idea what'll happen. Best case scenario, you get superpowers.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Worst case, some tumors, which we'll cut out."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Leukemia Man! Science has imbued him with the power of... Chemotherapy?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

More likey burn a hole in him

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No that's how you create the 200.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ask Anatoly Bugorski, he actually did. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatoli_Bugorski

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude thats DEFINITELY how you gain super powers!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if you call cancer and radiation sickness, skin peelling, hair falling, and maybe death, superpower, sure do (correct me if i ommited symptom)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Compared to live slowly through this economy in Detroit?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well i don't know, i'm not a burger, but go on, explain what the fuck is happening

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A joke, will die in the foreseeable future

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

can you be even more cryptic ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the area where the particles are beamed through is a couple inches at most. Maybe the tip of OP's finger can get superpowers though

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Said your mom

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Just the tip?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or the tip of something else ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

or a nasty burn and a tiny bit of cancer

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Sounds good

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m pretty sure 15 million volt will Instantly kill you

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Only if you're the shortest path to ground. Otherwise it'll go through whatever body part is shorting and back into the circuit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If we consider 20mA to be dangerous, at 15MV they'd need a 300kW generator to hurt you. That logic is usually applied under 400kV though

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If 20mA is dangerous, why dont we die from touching both poles of an usb connector?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No it does note create black holes. Bit I do fight headcrab

8 years ago | Likes 579 Dislikes 2

Do you guys keep crowbars around, just in case?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What exactly is the purpose of this? Research?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Science ! You throw ions on radioactive sources and you observe what it does. (It’s more complicated than that but it’s the idea)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you go to Ravenholm?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's EXACTLY what someone who was creating black holes would say...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But where's aperture science....

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it open portals into hell tho?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is Whiterose's plan?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

LOL I was just going to comment about this

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that a no pace maker sign on the lead door?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't want one of those going haywire under (presumably) heavy EM fields. Imagine if it started induction heating! O_O

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No shit. I figured there might be a good chance with all that equipment.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ça va, @OP? Orsay c'est Tranquil non? Donc bus#6 est le merde.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Un peu XD T’es étudiant dans la fac ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The choppy English made this comment, and the post, way more immersive. +1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What color are the holes then?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have Homer Simpsons desk...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it true you guys are using it to open portals to other dimensions so the elites can let in demonic entities to rule the planet.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

It makes me sad that someone I know believes this

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That train left the station about 3,000 years ago

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too late on the demonic entities... They found their own portal...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
