It's worse than that, they had a full blockade of Qatar, where we have our largest military base in the Middle East, and after Kushner was refused by Qatar a bailout of his $1bil mortgage on 666 5th Ave, the Trump administration SUPPORTED the blockade. Then, whoopsie, Qatar decided to "invest" in kushner, and the Trump admin reversed their stance. $400mil is a much cheaper "gift" than a $1bil bailout. Plus they now have a base on OUR soil.

A crapton of the "wonders" we look at in awe are just the surviving construction projects that last long enough to become revered. The Colosseum spent more time as an eye sore that was too difficult to dismantle, the Parthenon's modern fame was more nationalistic PR against Ottoman rule, and the Pyramids are just too freakin' massive to go away. Big ass construction project + time = historical landmark

Eh. Not much artistry to a lot of what we build these days though. Especially when you factor in the ingenuity it took to do things like build pyramids with pyramid-era technology. A silly fish building doesn't make me wonder anything except "why?"

I think you are just not paying attention. There are some incredible skyscraper designs out there. Some really polarising stuff that people either love or hate. Try watching the B1M and practical engineering on YouTube if you want to grow your appreciation for mega projects.

We could also maybe point to capitalism & the industrial revolution causing the rise of individualism & erosion of broader communal relationships, the advent of mass literacy & mass/social media, & the monetization of much of the economy. All of which in turn reduces the social importance of such prestige projects, as people are disconnected from their communities, wealth and power are increasingly associated w/easily measurable metrics, and people can get concrete info on all of this anytime.

To say there isn't artistry in modern works is really ignorant. The silly fish building is a joke, but the Burj Kahlifa is rife with artistic decisions. The Gorges Dam is an engineering marvel. The reality is, most projects we revere today were controversial in their time. The Eiffel Tower was seen as an eyesore until it was around long enough to be iconic. The Taj Mahal is a vanity project from taxpayer money. I could go on.
