While that is extremely important. It's also important to understand what type of brake hour vehicle has. You won't see this in a uhaul or something but box trucks like that often have a style of parking brake that require you to remove slack from the brake cable before setting the brake(usually it's a rotating part of the handle. Turn it till tight then pull up the lever.) not doing so will give the appearance of being braked while not. Obviously training should cover crap like this but uknow..

Assuming the parking brake has been maintained. My grandfather was run over by a truck with a failed parking brake due to corporate negligence. You might think this was a slam dunk case for us but we spent over a decade litigating it before my grandfather finally passed away from injuries related not to the accident but from having fallen out his wheelchair at the nursing home and gone 28 hours without being checked on. The dehydration caused kidney failure.

In civilized countries cars have to be checked yearly or every 2 years. Brakes and other essential stuff. If you use the parking brake regularly then you have to maintain nothing. I hate ppl who only put a gear in (manual gearbox) instead of the brake. Most modern cars have automatic parking brakes, you hear a motor tightening it after you shut down the motor. The manual parking brake is also fun in the winter (especially if you have a front wheel driven car, like most cars in Europe).

Another good piece of advise is to push down on your regular brake when you set the parking brake. Then the parking brake is more secure

When I was 16 I parked my car in front of my friend's house, which was on a downhill slope, set the parking brake, put it in neutral so that I could let off the clutch and fiddle with somethingorother before going inside. Came back out twenty minutes later to find that my car was gone. I hadn't put it back into gear because I trusted the parking brake, but I apparently hadn't pulled it hard enough, so it slipped and rolled down the hill. You can bet I curb my wheels every damn time now.

Make sure your parking brake actually works. A lot of them do not.
Give yourself some room, E-Brake on, into drive, foot off brake. If your car drives off it doesn't work.

I drove stickshifts most of my life & was also a professional driver (courier in multiple jobs) so crunching that P-brake is just a lifelong habit for me; a lot of people never use it but that's exactly why videos like this one exist. Especially delivery drivers who never drove a stick. Jump out, run to drop a pkg, thinking it's only a few seconds, get delayed or distracted, & return to find the van way down the hill smashed against something expensive.

I learned the hard way.. my truck rolled down a fairly busy road about 100m/yds. Fortunately, there was a lull in traffic (comes in waves with changing traffic signal nearby). Thankfully, I only had to replace the bumper but the frame was knocked askew, had to be straightened. severe rookie move.. It was N (manual) and no P brake. (damn.. makes me cringe at how dumb and lucky I was).

When I bought my first car, my dealership offered a free training course for owners. This is one of the things they taught - always engage the parking brake. They also taught how to replace a tire, how to jumpstart, that kind of thing. It was an excellent course.

Both of our cars (2021 Camry and a 2023 F150) automatically engage the parking brake when you put it in park and disengage it when you take it out of park. So it may be a moot point.
But in general yeah put it on. I got in the habit because I drove a manual for decades and you absolutely can't trust that to stay in gear and hold the car.

Try this test: put it in Park on flat ground. Now go out & push on it. Feel it rock? There's play in it isn't there? Now imagine that Park is just a metal pin stuck in the gear teeth, otherwise, it's in Neutral. If your car gets nudged by another car, that pin will snap, & there goes your car down the hill. That's why your car HAS a parking brake -- to prevent runaways.
Good habits make good drivers. Engage your brake every time you park it. Flat ground or not. Do it without thinking about it.

In a lot of cars it's also possible to snap that pin if you slam the gearshift hard. Maybe not likely, but possible. Parking brakes always.

UK here. During driving training (late 1980s) we were instructed that if you expect to be stopped more than a few seconds, drop the gearbox into neutral and employ the handbrake. Seems very few drivers took this to heart, but it definitely reduces the chances of this type of incident.

I knew a guy who tried to teach his sister this, but she kept taking off while forgetting to release the parking break. A lot of damage later, she just stopped using the parking break. Unfortunately, too many people can't be bothered to develop the discipline.

Brakes need adjustment from time to time. My GF drove several miles with the P-brake on, at freeway speed. Other drivers managed to get her to pull over b/c of the thick column of white smoke coming from her wheel.
It was a costly repair.
