Having been in the service industry for a thousand years, it’s not an age thing. I’ve served ladies who were waitresses 60 years ago that still tidy up their spot. Messy and careless people are always there. That’s why you get somebody who serves tables now and somebody who did it forever ago the stories often are similar. You recall good tables,bad tables, and the weird ones in between

I'll be honest, I've never stacked up dishes before leaving a restaurant. Having said that, I've never had to do any of it, because servers always clean up long before I leave. I'll just be sitting there, talking with whomever I'm with, while finishing my drink and served just pick up empty dishes whenever they pass by and notice one.
I'm not from the US, though, so not sure if that makes a difference.

As an American that has eaten in a half dozen or so European countries, the experience is fairly different. It's a lot faster paced in the states, and the system of tips definitely changes the game. There is a cultural element of "I can't linger here if I'm not buying" that a lot of Americans have. Europeans seem a lot more casual about it, in my experience.

Well the experience for me is that if you're out for food with someone, you eat, then maybe finish it all off by ordering a coffee. So the main food plates have already been tidied up (of which you usually help the staff with collection because it's convenient)

It's like the difference between someone that's worked retail and someone who hasn't. Those who have will return the item they changed their mind on back to it's place on the shelf vs the person that hasn't and will place it whatever it's convenient.

My mom's a boomer and she ALWAYS likes to clean up the table herself a bit before leaving. Stacking the dishes a bit, wiping the area around her plate, putting all the silverware on the topmost plate. It's like she can't help herself. I do the same since otherwise I feel guilty.

Last time I went out for dinner it was around 200 euro for 4 people. A basket of garlic bread, 4 mains nothing weird like the most expensive cut of meat/fish. Just 'middle of the menu' items, 6 drinks (soda's) and a few scoops of ice as dessert. Two... hundred... euros. I can eat a whole month from that.

The weirdest (or most remembered) interaction I’ve ever had at a restaurant was at The Melting Pot. We had finished eating and had cleaned everything up and the waitress came with the check, and then she said “Oh, I’m going to wait while you sign. People that clean up the table always steal my pen.” 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

When I was 17 I started my first job as a dishwasher. We were out to eat one night and I started stacking the dishes to make it easier on the whole staff and my dad kinda yelled at me because that’s the servers job. My dad didn’t even tip 15%.

I started doing that as a kid and got my dad doing it and my mom would tell us to stop. Especially at Chinese restaurants they laugh and love it. After working 10+ years in the industry and I def do this still.

And while I agree with what you stated, verbatim, let's ensure your words don't get twisted into "I'm still going to eat out, it's not my job to subsidize decent wages" - Avoid restaurants out of principle if you're not going to tip because often it ends up hurting the wait staff due to tipout or tip sharing with the BOH.

100%. I personally do a bit of gathering and tidying, because that seems like just basic courtesy. My partner (who has worked food service pretty much all their life) regularly goes through easily ten times as much effort wiping things down and stacking everything.

Yeah I don't know the busboy's preference so I just make sure that all the dishes are towards the end and all table fixtures are back in their place. I worked at a grocery store for 6 years, all I ever asked was don't damage things, anything else I get paid for dealing with.
