Truly. I've had goldens where I could leave a plate of food unattended and they wouldn't touch it, but if I hold that plate out to them it'll be inhaled immediately.
My wife couldn't figure out why my dog wouldn't take the cheese with her medicine in it. I asked, "did you do the whistle?" Had to teach my wife the whistle that signals, "this is allowed for you to eat." Without the whistle, my pup won't eat food you press into her mouth. (Obviously the exception to this is anything placed in her bowl. That's fair game without the whistle.)
But the dog was careful and gave him every chance to wake up and change his mind. Until finally, “Well, he clearly doesn’t care what happens to it, so…”

And the patting and positive reinforcement after teaches the dog that this was the right thing to do.

Agree! And do they think dogs can't tell they're pretending to sleep?

My boy knows when cheese is out. Even if I've got music playing loud as soon as it's opened he is there.

My girl is 19 years old and at least half blind and deaf but will still magically appear at the fridge every time the cheese comes out

My cat is the same way, and he doesn't even like cheese! He just wants to sniff it and make sure he still doesn't like it.
