When I worked at the airlines during the later stages of Afghanistan I saw soooo many young black and Latino men and women in uniform. I was in my late 20s and even to me they looked so young and vulnerable. I would be interested to see the racial makeup of the entry ranks vs. the higher-ups.

I said this last time I saw this image like, "we'll never forget this" oh ya you will. Most citizen's attention span is like a week or two. It's quite hard to focus both on both a party eroding social safety nets, and filling your belly, making rent on stagnating wages. 4th generation military and further left than the Democrat party here. Anecdotally, Reagan took the military and made it not only OK to serve, but honorific. Before his PR campaign it was the old "dogs and soldiers keep off the grass" mentality. Add to that the fact that almost every GOP POTUS has given the military raises and Bada bing Bada boom. At least, that's my understanding of why so many military folks vote conservative.

Sad to say, back in the day, when I was active duty I never voted. Was too busy in remote places to even think about voting. Plus, in those days '72 - '81 no one in our chain of command ever even mentioned our civic duty. After I got out, I started voting. Voted independent, no party affiliations. These days, the republicans have gone insane and my votes for the foreseeable future will be democratic.

A lot of bills don't directly support the vets, but go for certain acts that do. Example: Burn Pit Act didn't increase VA funds, but came from money that was used to support the program that VA used. So they go after certain acts to kill them. We used to have higher tuition assistance, but they cut acts that gave money to things like books, registration fees, out of state fees, etc etc. Used to cover a whole year's worth of college with tuition assistance, now it covers 4500.

Skimming it again, and without having a law degree, being a veteran, or having any particular qualifying pedigrees allowing me to speak with authority on the matter, my best guess is that the changes to Medicaid and SNAP might be an indirect blow to veterans. The tweet comes from a group that speaks directly for veterans, so it probably makes sense to them, if they're not speaking from a grossly misinformed perspective.

That's pretty much the definition of patriotism. (The real kind, not the last refuge of scoundrels kidn.) Doing what's against your own personal interests, if you feel it is in the best interest of the nation. It's not even surprising that Veterans would vote that way. It used to be a Democrat talking point too. "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Remember the Vet who said that one?

Honest question, why do they hate Vets so much? I'm a Veteran and I have been fortunate enough to have VA care when I didn't have anywhere else to go. Our VA hospitals need more funding not less. What is the point of their malice. I thought they were the party of "patriots and the military." Nothing would seem more patriotic than supporting our vets. So, what gives?

And, that's simply because they've gone "all-in" and put their faith in the GOP just as much as they do a church. It's why they give billionaires tax cuts but increase taxes for everyone else, want to cut funding to education but push private schooling, want to get rid of social security, and want to cut veteran benefits. Trump said why loud and clear many times: to them, you're not supposed to come back alive and in need of support, ie in need of funds the Reaganite rich would need to pay taxes for. They're supposed to be dying for military contractor profits, not consuming benefits. The answer is they never cared about anyone except the rich, specifically their rich donors. So defense contractors are great, but they don't give a shit about the actual troops, either during or after service. I got to see that firsthand in Iraq. So many fucking giveaways to contracting firms, but no money for standing up extra units so we didn't have to do back to back to back tours - in fact they fought specifically against doing that.
