I mean, media that patches over how shit it is by throwing in random minorities and virtue signaling tends to be just as bad as the low-effort "non-woke" bullshit on the other side. Turns out that when you're focused more on making something good than telling everyone how hard you fight in the culture war, you can actually create something that people want to engage with. ...it's just telling of where we are that things that contain any minorities are automatically considered to favor one side.
My only concern with this would be studios focusing their efforts on trying to clone the success and strangling other worthy projects under development or not realized yet
People who call things "woke" unironically are so weird. Especially when it's about something fictional like this. It's so funny how many people seem to think this is legitimate history. 🤔
The idiots who complain about The Odyssey being woke are the same morons who still think Jesus was some blue eyed blonde Caucasian man. They never cared about authenticity or accuracy, they're using the Odyssey to mask their weak pathetic hatred.
Nope, they'll use it to mask their racism, sexism and bigotry, but they could never tell you what it actually means to be aware of the prejudices around you in society.
I haven't seen it (has nothing to do with the movie, just me not going to theaters), but I hear that some of his soldiers make it back with him. Is this true?
I have read the Iliad & the Odyssey in high school. I found them interesting & quite informative. Would someone please tell an old person what actually *woke* means to you all, so that I may grasp it better ?
Well, the version of THE ODYSSEY Nolan was working from was edited by a feminist author who wanted to get the female perspective of the ten-year ocean voyage. Much was made of a black actress playing Helen of Troy, Elliot Page playing a character that wasn't even in the book (and being on the small side for a stormtrooper, I mean soldier) and no Greek deities except for Athena, in spite of the book showing a heavy influence from different ones.
People calling this movie woke seem to forget; this isn't Homer's Odyssey it's Nolan's Odyssey. Homer's Odyssey made it contemporary for his time, and Nolan has done the same for ours.
Good writing and directing is what matters. The biggest complaint they I had with a lot of "woke movies " was that the writing was bad. And it was unfair that the actors got the blame instead of the directors. Because a lot of those movies could of been successful.
Not really though it has stunt casting so Nolan can qualify for the academy awards. Some right wings pundits bitched about the casting, but the actual reviewers conceded they expected the film would make a lot of money based on Nolan. Lefties are now pretending they all said it was going to be a flop and cheering while ignoring the numerous examples of other films that have fliopped.
I'll save you the trouble of finding it out yourself. They cast Lupita Nyong'o as Helena of Troy, which is apparently the real reason the modern Nazis call this film 'woke'.
And they were upset about him playing a character that he NOT ONLY wasn't playing, but a character that WASN'T EVEN IN THE MOVIE because he DIED IN THE ILIAD.
These bigoted fucks don't even know the source material they're claiming to be outraged for.
What I find really dumb is that if they stopped hyperventilating about the cast and dogwhistling about "historical accuracy" they'd realize the actual "woke" part of the damn movie: the fact that the whole thing is about American politics. Why do you think all of the Greeks have American accents and keep talking about how custom and decency is dead after a 20+ year war in the East that turned into a massive quagmire.
The movie was.. meh. They portayed odysseus as not really caring if he got home or not.. which is not how the original story went... the visuals were great though.. classic nolan film. The dialogue was also weird most of the time.
I mean, if you wanted an accurate portrayal of the Odysseus story you could just watch O Brother, Where Art Thou. Nolan movies just exist for popcorn spectacle, not for anything related to writing.
I understand that and I am not asking for a perfect retelling but the heart of the story is the guy trying everything to get home... the entire movie he literally did not give a shit if he got home or not and when he did it wasnt a emotional at all.. he just went "ok.. well.. im here."
Nolan makes cinematic spectacles with excellent visuals, mostly decent scores, terrible storytelling, and shallow characters with dialogue that confuses exposition with "cerebral". I have enjoyed some of his work but they are what they are. Partner went to see it on Friday and basically confirmed it was another of the same. Fuck the right wingers trying to make a topic out of their bigotry though and I'm glad it's doing well in spite of it.
Popular opinion: If a movie is 3 hours long, there needs to be a scheduled bathroom break. Operas and stage plays have always had intermissions for this reason, but movie theaters dropped the ball on this one. Probably because early movies were a single reel of up to 15 minutes. Everyone could sit through that. Before long they had a runtime of 90-100 minutes, which is still survivable without a pee break. But now the average runtime is 115 mins. You can't do that to people with a weak bladder.
The RunPee app was useful when I went to the theaters more often. Nowadays, unless it's an "event" (Avatar in 3D, Odyssey in imax, etc) I'll just wait for streaming.
nah if they really cared about user experience they would propose both options. Where i live, when they finally stopped with the 15 minute break with ice cream and coca cola ads i was truly overjoyed and that was around the time LotR came out so its not about movie length. If im paying to see a movie in theaters i dont want any breaks in my immersion. But as your opinion is also valid and many share it, there is bound to be a market for it.
In the 90s we had intermissions on regular cinema movies, about 10 min to get up, pee, buy more food, stretch. It went out of style when the big money-making multiplexes (6 rooms or more) started skipping intermission to fit in an extra movie showing or two in the day. I would appreciate the break for anything longer than two hours nowadays with these movies
At my local small cinema in the 90s they'd sell ice cream at the front during the interval. Was awesome! As a kid my favourite part of going to see apollo 13.
I can hold my bladder for 2 damn hours. I'd rather have more time after the movie, thanks. Intermissions on anything less than 3 hours is a waste of my time.
Fair, but I'll also point out the theatrical cut of Gettysburg was a full hour and a half LONGER than the Odyssey. 4 hours and 14 minutes is actually worth an intermission. Under 3 hours (which the Odyssey is)? They're just being whiney unless they have a medical condition.
honestly i kinda feel like its a good thing they did, helped it get seen more. even made some people want to see it simply because the right wing nut cases tagged it as woke. Fuck Maga, Fuck the Right. Fuck these nut jobs
They can't deal with Eliot Page *playing a man* (what **else** would he play?) and Lupita Nyong'o as a Black Helen of Troy -- because they grew up with the bizarre myth that *the Greeks were all straight white people*. 🤣
MAGA has to be kept mad so they can be controlled. Those controlling them that this was their latest thing to be mad at. They don’t even stop to consider how stupid it is to be mad at it, they are just pointed in a direction.
The reason all the intelligent people are left wing is not because they actually are, but because the left has done such a good job demonizing intelligence there's no where else for them to claim to be.
Its not woke but it def has its issues. Im tired of movies with the same cast, and out of place characters. When i first saw the trailer without knowing its the odyssey I thought this was a movie about vikings then as the trailer goes on the more confusing it was. Apocalypto wis one of my favourite movies of all time. Unknown actors, language, visuals all make that movie immersive and impressive. Its so disappointing movies like that dont get made anymore.
Oh, yeah: Apocalypto **was** great: interesting story, well-directed and acted, and made a ton at the box office -- and I don't recall anyone saying "Well, it was made by Mel Gibson: *I'm boycotting it.*" We all saw it because *it was a good movie*!
Just saw this today. I honestly have no idea what could possibly be "woke" about it. It's the same damn story (basically) that has been told for, what, 4000 years? I don't know how old this poem is.
One of the themes, is that by breaking the traditional norms or hospitality you sow the seeds of the end of civilization. This could be read as criticism of republican policy, disregarding checks and balances, ignoring international laws, and refusing to accept that even a king must stick to laws
Or, that nuance has gone straight over their heads andcit just that it has brown people in it.
Okay, checked IMDB. If I ever hear someone talk shit about the casting, I say "Yeah, Damon? Patinson? Those guys have such dominant Northern European features, I'd rather expect them to star in a historical drama about Finish/Norse Tribal war, in upper Scandinavia then to portrait Greeks." Yeah Nyong'o is Kenyan and even though Agamemnon might have had some Nubian Princess from Egypt among his wives, she does not look like a daughter of that. - But neither does the rest of the cast look the part
Yes, he did. It's a very small role. Maybe a total of 3-4 minutes? Basically he plays the smallest (and frailest?) of Odysseus' men who is left behind with the Horse to let the Trojans know it's a gift and the war is over.
no no, you misunderstand, I know, my point is, if people has a problem with that, then fucking say it, and show the world how ugly you are on the inside, dont hide behind all sorts of other cr
Eliot Page is Sinon (a character that does not appear in Homer's original Iliad, but in Virgil's Aenid, which is a kind of a Roman fan fiction sequel to the Greek story) and apparently does a great job of the part.
Elliot can't act. But also, Matt Damon. Seriously, I am not impressed by Damon at all. Obv I'm just one person, but I'd go see Elliot Page over Matt Damon.
Like I'm glad Elliot can get roles, I think it's amazing. But the man can't act.
"Woke" just means literally any aspect of the piece of media doesn't reinforce the idea that cishet white Christian men are the greatest form of life on planet Earth while everyone else is enslaved or dead.
I'm choosing to interpret "woke" as "performative politics". That way some of what the right complains about falls within it, but also a lot of what they do.
And the hypocritical thing is in that entire term. Most of these cishet men are closeted gays, “white” as a race is a completely fabricated concept genetically speaking, and their Christianity is nothing but racist, sexist hate. They are in every way walking contradictions.
I find the "Its about authenticity for the roles being correct for the time and place" line, despite none of them ever having a problem before when obviously white actors played ethnic roles, to hilariously highlight why their take is particularly dumb, hyprocritical, and ultimately racist.

Elliot can't act. But also, Matt Damon. Seriously, I am not impressed by Damon at all. Obv I'm just one person, but I'd go see Elliot Page over Matt Damon.
Like I'm glad Elliot can get roles, I think it's amazing. But the man can't act.
Just like Matt Damon. Hate that guy

"Woke" just means literally any aspect of the piece of media doesn't reinforce the idea that cishet white Christian men are the greatest form of life on planet Earth while everyone else is enslaved or dead.
spiderjohn36
You mean the white Christian guys who cream their jeans over '300'? /S

And Christian white men are such a seldom occasion in 800bc Ionia

Christians - You know, Morons.

I'm choosing to interpret "woke" as "performative politics". That way some of what the right complains about falls within it, but also a lot of what they do.

Exactly. It's anything that hurts their fee-fees by not stroking their dainty lil egos.

Pretty close to my understanding, which is simply anything a maga doesn't like at any given point in time.
lovehandlesmessiah
And the hypocritical thing is in that entire term. Most of these cishet men are closeted gays, “white” as a race is a completely fabricated concept genetically speaking, and their Christianity is nothing but racist, sexist hate. They are in every way walking contradictions.

Brought to you by the people who will kill anyone who says they aren't filled with God's love.

Nvm that mediterraneans are dusky and dark haired on average... not prelobstered basement dwellers.

I read that as dusty. And I was like damn I know I’m turning 40 next year but I’m not dusty. Lol

I find the "Its about authenticity for the roles being correct for the time and place" line, despite none of them ever having a problem before when obviously white actors played ethnic roles, to hilariously highlight why their take is particularly dumb, hyprocritical, and ultimately racist.
iConfirmAnythingAndEverything
I mean.... Matt Damon and Tom Holland were leads... in a movie based in the Mediterranean.

But but there is melanin in the cast! MELANIN!
