What psycho shoots a 14 month old puppy. Even if it is completely untrainable. Sick fuck.
TheobromineAddict
She's more useless than the dog.
Kess9215
While she should be arrested, the worst that may happen is she loses her job.
Feralkyn
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/29/kristi-noem-misdemeanour-shooting-dog Petitions are fucking useless in this case; the Guardian did a good rundown here on what she might, maybe, possibly be charged with and honestly there's no way it would hold up in court (that she "harbored" a dog that attacked poultry long enough to get it home *before* shooting it)
RedSkizzers
A confession is still a confession, even if printed in hardcover and sold on amazon. Lock her up!
Doggowhisperer23
Singed! Vile excuse for a human.
forelle
You know what would be _really_ funny? If she got shot by a dog. I mean it is the US – stranger things have happened.
CallMeMcGyver
If even Hitler loved his dogs, what did she think this revelation was going to buy her with the rest of her Nazi party?… Granted, it’s a dog whistle (no pun intended) for extremists to murder “lesser people” who are “untrainable” when the time comes for them to overthrow the government.
getyourfruitoffmeyoudamndirtygrapes
Uh, I support the emotion behind the effort, but this does nothing.
rulek
This is a distraction. Enough about the dog. Killing democracy should be more alarming.

Post like these are no different than what alt-right posts about Hunter. Some of you are just as insane as them. I'll take the downvotes now.
veronicablood
what a piece of shit
BellsTheorem
Where is Cricket?
khora
Didn't she just shoot the dog?
FluffyDon360
She shot the dog for a few given reasons, ("untrainable" but also killed chickens) with mixed results, than also attempted to kill a goat because she didn't like it.
Basically, yes, killing on the farm is a thing, but she made it sound like a thing to be celebrated rather than something that she had to do.
khora
Yeah, but how do you get that to felony animal cruelty?
Feralkyn
It's unfortunate that a lot of folks here don't realize it's just plain not illegal in many cases. The felony animal cruelty law didn't even exist yet when she did this. There's almost nothing they can get her for and even the shit they CAN try for is so incredibly weak it'd never stand up in court https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/29/kristi-noem-misdemeanour-shooting-dog

"Mr Trump, do you think the dog deserved to to be shot?"
ThisOldCPU
Hey @OP, serious question with 0 snark. What impact do you believe change.org petitions have?
wadatahmydamie
She’s a monster, but this is a valid question. I’d love to see the data behind the success rate of these petitions
msdss
Even if she were to be prosecuted for this, they are forgetting the one key element here. She's a politician, and therefore above any standard laws that us normal folk are subjected to... such as... killing a dog, rape, treason, etc....
VinnyVeritas
The PERFECT running mate for Trump (who also hates dogs) but doesn't have the cognitive capacity to operate a complex mechanical device like a common pistol
nicilaskin
it was and still is legal in that state , even though a lot of people think its morally wrong she still was within her rights to do it ... she is still evil
thetonestarr
False. South Dakota law specifically defines animal cruelty to include "unnecessarily injuring" an animal. While gunshot is considered a humane way to end its life, it does not meet the standard for "necessary", so this would still qualify as cruelty.
UnpinionedPoplars
Waste of time and effort. It was 20 years ago, so she can't be charged.
I was also furious when I first read the posts, so I dug deeper to make sure I wasn't being manipulated. She killed Cricket for killing a neighbor's chickens. Keeping Cricket would've put Noem on the hook for a class two misdemeanor (https://sdlegislature.gov/Statutes/40-34-2).
I'm still furious. There's even more to the story, and by proudly publishing the story, she's convinced me that she's a piece of shit.
49erdoucheman
There are apparently laws against keeping chicken killing dogs, once your dog did the crime, the decision to put them down isn't always up to an owner. Even if they are bad owners and wanted to kill them to begin with. If your dog was to bite a kid bad enough, the state would have it put down, and how you are legally able to do it varies state to state.
soccergenius
You're misreading the statute, which says she's responsible for the damages. It says nothing about not applying if the dog is put down.
Feralkyn
It applies if you "harbor" a poultry-killing dog. That is the only thing they could get her on, b/c she didn't immediately kill the dog on the same property. It's incredibly weak and would never hold up.
UnpinionedPoplars
Nah, I'm reading it the same way you are. Cricket proved that she was a hunter, so Noem killed her so she wouldn't have to spend dollars later. She may (or may not) have paid for the lost chickens this time, but she wasn't willing to do it again. Me? I'd've given Cricket to someone far away from livestock and let her be a family dog. Noem's a POS, full stop.
soccergenius
The actual relevant statute makes it plain she broke the law. The dog wasn't shot while in the act, and wasn't shot on the livestock owner's property.
soccergenius
https://sdlegislature.gov/Statutes/40-34-1
Feralkyn
That doesn't make it against the law at all. It's just clarifying it's legal to do it while the dog is caught in the act.

The only positive outcome I've seen is that from left to right, they all agree that this worthless piece of trash has killed her chances of running for VP.
electronicbovine
It's the goat she immediately killed next, after she got a taste for it, that's most concerning tbh
UnpinionedPoplars
And, to make it worse... She used a shotgun. The first shot didn't kill the goat and she only had one shell in the gun. She had to walk back to the truck for more shells. The second shot killed the goat. This is a horrific way to kill. I have only contempt for her.
WillemHellfire
I'm just waking up and need some coffee. Does anyone know when she killed the dog? I mean, what year?
kozzillakilla
It was 20 years ago, according to a response tweet, and already has been pointed out that statute of limitations would be over.
Feralkyn
There wasn't a relevant law at the time anyway
49erdoucheman
Also, why did she kill the dog? Was it hurt, dying or sick? I've read 3 headlines today and each is about as crazy as the next. Imma get off the internet for the day and go touch some grass. Have fun yall.
UnpinionedPoplars
In her book, she states that Cricket was untrainable and ruined a pheasant hunt by being too excited. However, she apparently didn't kill her until after Cricket killed a neighbor's chickens. There are state laws in SD against keeping chicken-killin' doggos. There's even more to the story, and it goes further to demonstrate that she's a piece of shit, but she didn't kill a puppy just for not learning how to behave.
49erdoucheman
Gotcha, thanks for the additional info. I had no idea about chicken-killin' doggos and laws against them in certain states. I'm in CA and can remember my dog being shot because it got in a field of live stock, so it makes sense. I remember we ended up paying for a cow that they had to put down due to a broken leg caused by our dog.
wadatahmydamie
Because she felt that it was “untrainable” as a hunting dog. It was 14 months old.
300Hectares1TankofKerosene
Oh FFS. This is only going to help her! Yes, she’s a piece of shit, but this is the exact reaction she was hoping for.
MarkusAwesomesauce
We always seem to forget the "Owning the libs" part. Us being upset is the point.
300Hectares1TankofKerosene
Her being “cancelled” is exactly what she needs for more MAGAs to get on board. I hate this fucking timeline. One side are adults trying to live in a better country thats not run by racist, rich, Christian zealots, and the other side are mouth breathing livestock permanently stuck at age 13, who think politics is a WWE match, free of consequences.

2074red2074
I'd have to look at her state's laws but chances are she didn't do anything illegal. Animal cruelty laws tend to be pretty weak and only cover the absolute worst stuff.
Feralkyn
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/29/kristi-noem-misdemeanour-shooting-dog yeah.
PballQhead
Even strong laws would probably allow shooting; it's an extremely humane way to go if it's done right. I've put a few pigs down with a .357, they absolutely did not suffer at all. Fuck, they got it better than most humans we put down.
The issue is the why, and not training your puppy right is some Hitler-level reasoning.
thetonestarr
South Dakota law specifically defines animal cruelty to include "unnecessarily injuring" an animal. While gunshot is considered a humane way to end its life, it does not meet the standard for "necessary", so this would still qualify as cruelty.
2074red2074
I'd like to see the case law on that, because otherwise the entire meat industry would be illegal.
kojiiriin
That makes absolutely no sense. Killing animals for human consumption is an extremely justifiably "necessary" reason.
2074red2074
Is it? What about the culling of male chicks or calves of dairy cows? It's pretty hard to justify culling them just because you don't want them or they have low meat yield if you can't justify killing a dog that would require time and effort to train.
FrankRizzo55
You know she's the GOVERNOR of her state, right?
DSREX
A very corrupt state, like for decades, the elected officials of SD are very corrupt. She is the norm not the exception. And beyond the normal GOP BS.
FetteredJuvenescence
I think their point was that she can actually pardon herself, unless you get her charged in the federal system.
DSREX
I would normally say it would need a good state AG, but JFC he is almost as bad as the TX one. So the chances of state law enforcement is low, it would take a federal case and she is likely under a threshold to pursue. And because she is on the short list for VP, political choices will be made. They will be the wrong choices but we all know that.
malak0rX
As someone who lives in sodak, you’re not wrong.
We have the misfortune of too many red voting boomers still alive.
DSREX
Went to HS in Spearfish, spent 5 hellish years in the BH before I managed to GTFO.
muhvitus
Dunno about local laws but many places accept gunshot as lawful way to end animal life if it is done cleanly.
Feralkyn
I got shat on for saying that earlier. The Guardian did a rundown of what she *could* be charged for and ironically, the only real thing on the books at the time was not shooting it FAST enough after it attacked poultry ('harboring an animal that attacks poultry') https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/29/kristi-noem-misdemeanour-shooting-dog
kubi
Which raises the next question, was it a "clean kill"?
AnonKneeMoose
If it was anything like how she shot her goat… no.
cre8majic
what about the goat she shot after the dog? Injured it with one shot, left it on the ground so she could walk back to house for more ammo
Feralkyn
I feel like that one is more likely, but North Dakota didn't really have laws like this on the books at all until after she'd done that by a few years :|
MarkusAwesomesauce
I've had to put a pet down with a gun before. It's horrible. Mine was for health reasons.
micicle
It has very little to do with the method and more the circumstances. She wasn't putting down an old sickly dog
Feralkyn
The law generally doesn't take that into account
thetonestarr
South Dakota law specifically defines animal cruelty to include "unnecessarily injuring" an animal. While gunshot is considered a humane way to end its life, it does not meet the standard for "necessary", so this would still qualify as cruelty.
AnonKneeMoose
Shooting a goat for shits n giggles and leaving it to suffer for a short while would amount to cruelty.
thetonestarr
Yep that doubly counts. The two together eliminate any question about the cruelty.
Baron29
Nothing wrong with it as a form of euthanasia (if it's done correctly/instant). The real issue here is euthanizing a dog for a bullshit reason
PballQhead
Yeah, came here to say this. Truth be told, for me, it's less that she shot the dog, that's just a country way and can be perfectly humane – it's that she euthanized an UNTRAINED PUPPY FOR ACTING UNTRAINED.
I'd be just as livid if she had had a vet come and put it down, not that any ethical vet would ever do that.
nothingunused
Didn't she also shoot a goat - and it took several shots?
onlyawfulnamesleft
She shot the goat for smelling funny.... you know, like a goat.
jeips
Exactly. Shooting a rabid dog or a sick or violent dog to put it down may not seem great, but sometimes its the only option, and it can be humane if done humanely. But shooting a dog just because you don't like it and because you didn't take time to train it? that's just you being an asshole who was looking for an excuse to shoot a living creature.
UnpinionedPoplars
A little more information: seems like she actually didn't shoot Cricket until she killed a neighbor's chickens. That put her on the hook (there are state laws assigning liability). I am *not* defending her actions. We had a beagle that did the same, and we had him for years after. BTW, Mom offered to pay for the chickens. The very Cajun neighbor's reply was that the dog didn't mean any harm, he probably just wanted to play, and "You know, you cain't hardly play wit' a chicken."
PballQhead
So what, my neighbor's dog ate our chickens once, they replaced them and we told them to keep her on a closer leash. Granted, we were good family friends, but still…dogs gonna eat chickens, that doesn't make them inherently bad puppers. Certainly not deserving of execution.
PosthumousExile
Didn't she let the dog off leash before it killed the chickens though??
AnonKneeMoose
She let an 18 month old puppy that she had poorly trainee herself off a leash and roam free in farmland. Whilst her shooting of the dog for the chickens may be legal, it fails to hold up to moral scrutiny. Her malice is only exacerbated by failing to correctly shoot a goat that was “so annoying”, leaving it in pain that she later ended by shooting a second time.
sevenfingerman
As much as I think she should be arrested for animal cruelty, I don’t think a petition is how that works.
[deleted]

Frostedjakes
What world do you live in?? In almost every state it is illegal to euthanize your own dog.
Youhavinagiraffe
It's not meant to directly have an impact like the police refer to petitions when making charging decisions. It exists to keep the story in the news and the number of signatories is an easy reference point to quantify public opinion which people can quote
stoots24
Lol the theater kids at my daughter’s high school didn’t like the lady in charge of the theater dept, so they passed around a petition to get rid of her. It actually worked, but it looks like there will be no theater dept next year, because no one has come forward to replace her.
varonicaED
I agree entirely, this is a job for John Wick!
DarkRedCape
I think the best we can do on this one is find some comfort in knowing she just killed her own career. Her chances of being VP just went to zero, and it turns out, even Right wingers love their dogs.
mycatsings
Unsurprisingly killing your puppy wasn`t the brag she thought it was.
Rogerwilco1974
Online petitions aren't worth the paper they are printed on
sevenfingerman
But they are online, there is no pape…..ooooohhh, I see what you did there.

No. You call John wick instead.
brownribbon
In any case, the statute of limitations has almost certainly passed for any possible crime she may have committed.
Hypothesist
I DECLARE PETITION!
Grimmrog
Sad that such a thing happens now, she even admitted the crime so nothing should be necessary anymore to make it happen.
mrthewhitee
It kind of is sometimes. Especially for public figures, some times cops need public pressure to open investigations they'd rather not bother with.
OmnipotentBeing
Whatever it takes to get Cruella Deville out of office.
Ababybunny
I had to sue over a stolen puppy. Got him back but the process made it clear the dog is a possession

Change.org petitions are always worthless. At best, they are "thoughts and prayers" in support of the actual campaign.
jefw1f
Awww man.
YourFellowMan
Yeah, they’re basically email, info and donation gatherers.
Firestar002
At most it shows how many actually want it to happen.
rezzvapes17
Yeah that’s what I was thinking. They can’t just arrest her because we want her to; they need probable cause and all that.
OmnipotentBeing
Maybe dig up the puppy corpse and check it for bullet holes? IDK
Nightcaste
She published a book detailing the incident. That is a confession AND profiting from an illegal act
TheChlorineAddict
So did OJ Simpson
sevenfingerman
After he was acquitted
sevenfingerman
And then the book was used as evidence against him in the civil trial
BurntRamen
Her writing it in a book probably isn't nearly enough to charge and convict her anyway. There's no tangible evidence. Just a story she can say she made up for clout. Nobody is out there arresting death metal singers and rappers for alleged crimes in their writing without additional tangible evidence.
Trunkmonkay
She also didn't commit a crime in SD. She stated in the book that the dog bit someone and attacked chickens, which are a legal justification for a dog owner to kill their pet. The spirit of the law is meant to apply to dogs that are actively hurting someone or killing livestock, not just killing your pet because it pissed you off a month later, but it's still legal
ChelVanin
They got Hunter Biden for admitting drug use while owning a firearm in a book.
BurntRamen
What crime was he convicted of?
ChelVanin
Never said he was convicted. Though he was prepared to plead guilty until the deal fell apart.
MadamPuddifoot
Well, per the story, there were plenty of witnesses. Construction workers saw her do it.
BurntRamen
If they could get those witnesses to come forward they might have a case.
JesaraB
Umm yes, there are, multiple rappers have faced charges based on crimes they described in their lyrics.
BurntRamen
Purely on what was in the lyrics and no other evidence? Or was there an actual crime to correlate it to?
Squidybutt
White republicans have their own rule book
JesaraB
In addition to the various cases involving rappers (over a dozen of which were national news), there is even a case where someone was arrested and spent 8 days in jail, for just posting lyrics from a death metal song on his facebook (not in response to anyone or anything, just on his own page). https://www.aclu-ky.org/en/news/victory-facebook-song-lyrics-arrest-case
Badprenup
With corroborating evidence. That's the key here.
ZachariasWolfe
I would think in such a case, the song (analogous to the book in her case) provides probable cause to search for the additional evidence.
JesaraB
To search, potentially, but the point was that there are multiple cases where the lyrics weren't just used as cause for a warrant, but were the entirety of the prosecution's case against them, and in some of those cases, they still got convictions. The Canady case for example, the only evidence was the lyric and owning a pair of guns that the prosecution admitted they couldn't show were connected to the crime. That's it, no physical evidence, no video, not even an eyewitness.
JesaraB
Nope, there are even cases where prosecutors have admitted that the lyrics are the Only connection the rapper had with the alleged crime, that they weren't even directly involved, such as Brandon Duncan. Vonte Skinner was convicted based on lyrics that predated the alleged crime by several years, and it took years to get his conviction overturned and make New Jersey precedent against using lyrics as evidence. Tommy Canady was convicted Purely based on a rap lyric he claimed was being misheard.
JesaraB
The Canady case there was Zero physical evidence and a study was even done showing how rap lyrics had more prejudicial effect than an actual report of a crime.
