This is why a simple magnet is superior most of the time. You find the screws with it. A regular SF would likely trigger on a water pipe.

Varies, but regardless, studs tend to follow a repeating pattern. If you detect 3 or 4 studs in a row, they should be roughly the same1/2

They are suggesting using the magnet to find the screws that hold the drywall to the stud. If you find those, you'll know where the stud is.
