As a former mascot, he more likely got out of that thing the second the cameras were off and he could find a place to change (you never change in front of people, that's the first rule of mascot club). So he either missed it completely or saw it with his normal human eyes.

It was the catalyst for a myriad of global seismic changes in war, espionage, law, aviation, economics, demographics, migration, politics, causing the rise and fall of nations, some of which are still in the process of falling... The rise of the far right, fueled by unrest from mass migration, caused by instability in the mid east. Brexit etc etc.

Yeah being an event that galvanized those changes and impacts is kinda what makes it significant. It left a huge scar on the psyche of a lot of Americans (in particular the political class and the wealthy and powerful) that in turn enabled a cultural shift whose impacts are still unfolding

Fun fact : This is one of the reasons people think Paris is a dirty city (not only). It used to have a lot of trash cans and public service but since 9/11 they get ride/sealed every trash cans, and lately replaced it by a simple ring that hold bag (So you can see if there's a bomb ;)). It's hardly unique to the US, it's something intrinisic to the state as a form of organization and governance. China does it, Australia does ir, the UK, Canada, France, Brazil, South Africa, Afghanistan, Belize and everywhere else has the pervasive thought in government that they ought to be able to see and track and know 'more' about the people in the country. And there isn't really ever a true stopping point, nor actual examination of what the real outcomes are vs the ideological ones.

There are a lot of interesting and valid points to be made about whether the US also engages in terrorist strategies, and none of those things will get you even a tiny bit closer to making the point that 9/11 was insignificant.

Depends on how you define terrorist attack. I'll just cite wikipedias definition: "Terrorism, in its broadest sense, is the use of violence against non-combatants to achieve political or ideological aims.[1] The term is used in this regard primarily to refer to intentional violence during peacetime or in the context of war against non-combatants." I'd argue the atomic bombs thrown on Japan were terrorist attacks by that definition. It's safe to say they were dealier.

Yeah, they certainly weren't the deadliest *attacks*, but for practical purposes "terrorism" usually excludes acts by states against states.
Though either way, if we're arguing about definitions to decide whether 9/11 was the worst one, it's hard to argue that it's "insignificant" like the comment I replied to said.

I know that's how many people use the word. But isn't the intent of the attack more important than who caries it out? The atomic bomb attacks were caried out to instill terror and the target was the civilian population. Same with the twin tower attacks.

If "who does it" is part of the definition, then it matters. War is when states do it, and terrorism is when non-states do it, that doesn't make either of them better or worse.
